BA (Hons) Film Production

BA Film Production offers practical

knowledge and understanding of the film industry, inclusive of cinematic techniques and aesthetics. In contemporary society the development of culture industries such as film, television and online content delivery platforms have led to an upsurge in the number of people producing visual material for Britain, Europe and throughout the world, including related areas such as film administration, journalism, research/writing, archiving. The study of Film Production provides a practical way of thinking about these developments within the framework of academic study and offers ways of understanding this ever-expanding development in contemporary culture.

Programme content

Film Production at the University of Winchester is a unique degree that is available within the Combined Honours framework. It offers students the opportunity to practice and study the skills of film, focusing on the technical aspects of film production. The programme is designed to extend knowledge and understanding of the technological dimensions of film and cinematic processes through the

acquisition of technical skills and knowledge of cinematography, editing and screenwriting. The programme places these within the wider filmmaking process in order to understand their role in creating meaning in film products through the combination of various skills, techniques and technologies.

There are a number of advantages to choosing Film Production at Winchester. It is a very distinctive and innovative programme that offers the opportunity to study an area of film that is not generally offered at degree level. The programme’s focus on the technical skills, such as professional camera systems, lighting, post-production techniques, the set and other areas of behind-the-scenes production, distinguishes it from most other programmes focussing on film production.

Within this framework the programme also offers critical ways of thinking about practical work. The teaching team believe that the most accomplished practitioners within the area of visual production are those who have an integrated understanding of critical and conceptual approaches to film and can bring this

knowledge to bear in their practice. With this in mind, we offer modules that develop critical ways of thinking which inform and complement the practical knowledge and skills developed in the programme.

Qualifications

The programme welcomes all students with a range of educational backgrounds and experience. You do not need to have studied film or media before, nor do you need to have engaged in practical work. However, you should be able to demonstrate your ability to engage in practical and critical ways of working and, most importantly, have a real enthusiasm and awareness of a wide range of film.

We are aware that not all schools or colleges offer entry level qualifications in either Film or related areas such as Communications or Media Studies or provide opportunities to engage in practical work. Students do not need to worry if this applies to you. In Level 1, we adopt an approach that focuses on the necessary skills, knowledge and concepts required to study Film Production at degree level. This means students who have done some film or practical work before will be introduced to integrated ways of working in which critical ideas and practice inform each other. Students who have done neither film nor practical work (or have one but not the other) will be introduced to new ways of studying and working without the requirement of engaging in both areas beforehand. Ultimately, the most important requirements for people wishing to study Film Production are an enthusiasm for practical work and a willingness to engage with critical ideas. As long as you have these two qualities, you will find that the programme will provide new perspectives while also building on areas of knowledge and interest, irrespective of which route led you to Film Production at the University of Winchester.

Learning and teaching

A variety of teaching methods are used on the Film Production programme. The teaching team believe that flexibility of delivery and student-centred learning are key to successful study. The main ways in which students learn are in technical workshops and individual and group tutorials. Here, independent work and study are integrated with practical learning and critical discussion of Film Production. These modes of learning are designed to develop skills and knowledge and to create the important level of interactivity between students that is crucial to working within practical environments. In addition, some modules offer learning environments based on lectures, seminars, tutorials and screenings. Above all, however, it is students’ independent study and enthusiasm for film and cinema which determine an enjoyable and successful programme.

Teaching team

Film Production is taught by an experienced and enthusiastic team of tutors who have a commitment to the study and practice of film. In practical areas, tutors have extensive,

current involvement with film and video production. In critical areas, tutors are engaged in research and have published widely in the area of film.

Facilities

The programme has full access to the Multimedia Centre, which has undergone a rapid expansion in recent years and is constantly being developed so that facilities are maintained at a level commensurate with student requirements for current technical and technological services. The Multimedia Centre offers students professional facilities in television, video, sound production, image manipulation and web content creation. The University also has a HD television studio, a radio station (and related sound production equipment), along with DV, greenscreen, editing and sound technology that is made available to students not only within programmes of study but also for independent work as and when students wish. The University is currently developing a second TV studio as part of its expansion of film, media and journalism provision. Please note some facilities are used as part of the degree programme, whilst some are for students to use outside the curriculum.

Career opportunities

We live in a world where the production of visual images is increasingly important and a degree in Film Production can lead to a whole range of different career op portunities as well as provide a solid basis for going on to further training or study. Graduates of Film Production go into areas related to film and media production; work directly with the production of visual or sound material (such as film or video); or work in related areas such as media administration, marketing or advertising where knowledge of visual media are important.
