Varying Deadlines & Awards
Congratulations KIPPsters! You are taking an even further step in continuing your education. As you know, financial planning and preparedness is one of the biggest and most important steps in the college-going process.
With over $3 billion in scholarship money available to students each year, it is critical to begin the scholarship search early and this guidebook can help you get started.
Quick Tips and Important Definitions
Grants: Similar to a scholarship, this is money that does not have to be repaid and is most often given out based
on a student’s financial need
Loans: Money that is borrowed and must be repaid to the lender, usually with interest
Work-study: Provides funds for part-time employment to help students to finance the costs of tuition
Scholarships: A form of financial aid intended to bridge the gap between what a family can contribute and the
actual cost of tuition. Scholarships can be won for a number of different talents, skills, accomplishments, or experiences.
It is imperative that students begin to make a list of scholarships they would be eligible for as early as possible. Remember…
• This is not a completely comprehensive list. Be sure to take the time to expand your search.
• Organize all the applications by deadline and make sure that you collect all of the necessary materials. • Have at least 2 other people read any essays you write for your applications.
• Treat each application with care.
• Do not wait until the last minute to apply!
How KTC Can Help
As always, KIPP Through College (KTC) is here to support you with the financial aid process! These are some of the ways KTC can help you understand financial aid and help you get the most money for college:
• Support you in completing financial aid applications such as the FAFSA, Dream Act, or CSS Profile
applications each year
• Review your financial aid award to make sure you are getting the most money from your school each year • Help you find and apply for scholarships and/or fellowships that can help cover the cost of college
• Read over and provide personalized feedback on scholarships essays
• KTC Tuition Scholarship: available each year to eligible 2 and 4-year college students and high school
seniors who finished a KIPP middle school in Los Angeles
We hope you enjoy and take advantage of the information presented in this guidebook. Happy scholarship searching!
