Rutgers University, a leading national public research university with over 54,600 students, began its first online program in 1999. Education programs are continually striving for greater student success rates. The Iowa Community College Online Consortium (ICCOC) leveraged Pearson LearningStudio’s Enterprise Reporting Suite to develop a reporting strategy to proactively identify at-risk students before they fail or drop out and guide them toward more successful learning paths.
Prior to Pearson’s involvement, 40 percent of ICCOC students were new to online learning and unfamiliar with the self-discipline needed to perform well in this environment. Just 77 percent of at-risk students completed their courses, and only 57 percent got a “C” or higher. The ICCOC needed to improve the speed and accuracy at which it identified at-risk online students in order to help them succeed.

Pearson LearningStudio Enterprise Reporting Suite offered the ICCOC centrally located, web-based tools that provided enterprise-wide visibility of student activity and performance. With a more efficient data trending and reporting method, the ICCOC identified at-risk students earlier, allowing educators to intervene in time to put students back on track to achieving their academic goals. For example, Pearson LearningStudio’s Student Activity Report displayed the time individual students were spending within a specific course or across the program’s entire offering – in weekly snapshots or over a considerable period of time. Inactive students, or those who hadn’t logged into their courses, were labeled at risk for failure. Enterprise Reporting also provided detailed insights into specific student activity. These include threaded discussion postings, and submissions to Dropbox to turn in assignments.

The Result: ICCOC Increases Student Success
The ICCOC was able to increase the student success rate for at-risk students by nine percent over a two-year period. Students were considered “successful” if they completed an online course with a “C” or higher. At the same time, at-risk students’ course completion rates increased from 77 percent to 82 percent. After four years, at-risk students’ course completion reached 85 percent, and at-risk student success reached 68 percent (up from 62 percent the previous year).
