LOG SHEET FOR

MA SOCIAL WORK STUDENT’S ACTIVITIES IN PMS

Pram Mitra Sadan (PMS) is a half way home started by Fracarita India situated in Ranchi, Jharkhand for individuals with chronic mental illnesses. It aim to help those people who are struggling to survive and adjust in their family and society because of their psycho social deficits caused from chronic mental illnesses. PMS aim to give intensive training in psychosocial and vocational skills and through that helping them to develop capacities to live actively and productively in their family and society. As part of the training G-SET students visit PMS every Wednesday and spend half day with the inmates and try to engage them in various skill building and leisure activities which will be planned in advance under the faculty supervision. The details of the activities conducted August 2015 are given below;

Day &Date Time Activities done

1st day, 29.07.15

2.30 P.M

Objective: To develop comfortability and rapport with the residents of PMS who are suffering from mental illness.

Activity:

o We sat in a circle heterogeneously to make sure that the

residents and the students could mingle with each other.

o Gave an open space to discuss about neutral topics and sing

songs to whom so ever voluntarily wanted to participate from both the groups; residents as well as the students to ensure a smooth interaction and removing the stranger feeling.

o Played a game- ‘musical chair’- through which we expected

to help the group to develop the interpersonal skills, better quality in relationships, help to improve the sensory –motor coordination of the inmates and also to provide a provision of leisure. In the game all were supposed to move round the chairs according to the musical instructions and need to grab

chair for oneself till the end. The one who lasts till the end with a chair, considered to be the winner.

Response:

Sitting arrangement made to develop a comfortable

atmosphere among the two different sets of groups. It gave an initiative mode for rapport building objective.

Residents showed partial participation in singing, they were

needed an external reinforcement more to participate.

Further, while shifting to the game mode residents showed

more voluntary participation. Even, the eldest one among the residents too participated.

2nd day, 05.08.15

2.30 P.M

Objective: To enhance the rapport building skill with the residents of PMS who are suffering from mental illness.

Activity:

o Used game mode; played ‘antakshari’ . People got distributed

into two groups consisting of a mixture of both students and residents in each. Both groups have to sing songs as per the letters given to them by the opposite group. The game designed with the objectives to develop the interpersonal skills, participatory skills, sharing responsibilities, memory skills and coordination skills and also to provide leisure.

o Further, played a game called ‘bucket ball’ where participant

has to target four balls from a marked distance and has to throw and drop the ball into the basket. The one who dropped the maximum balls has been announced as winner. The game designed to help the individuals to develop their sensory – motor skills, participatory skills, to develop a sense of confidence and competency and to provide leisure.

o The session ended with Badminton game through which we

aimed to give opportunity to the inmates to give a chance for leisure, to develop the sensory – motor skills especially Visio- motor coordination, and to develop a sense of competence and confidence.

Response:

Residents showed more participation in comparison to the

earlier day.

The physically engaging games proved as an exercising

session for the participants and this made them more active too.

The coordination between the students and the residents got

3rd day, 12.08.15

Objective: To learn disability assessment and to plan Independence day celebration

Activity:

o Each resident of PMS who are suffering from mental illness

got distributed as an individual case to each student by using numbering method. The two who got same numbers from both set of group (students and residents) came together.

Half an hour time got allotted to interact with sand write

a short history of the assigned resident.

o Further ‘save yours’ game played where the student has to tie

a balloon in their own and individual assigned resident’s leg. The balloon tied in one’s own leg has to be saved and they need to burst the other’s leg balloons. The game aimed to

improve their motor skills, participatory skills,

competitiveness, team work and opportunity for leisure.

o A meeting took place to discuss on the mode of celebration of

Independence Day with the PMS residents. Response:

Residents got convinced with the idea of ‘individual case’.

They engaged themselves answering to the details asked by the students during the interaction section.

Everybody participated well in the ‘save yours’ game. A sense

of enjoyment reflected in the participation of the residents.

4th day, 19.08.2015

2.30 PM

Objective:

a) To learn the process of assessment through Indian Disability Evaluation and Assessment Scale.

b) To develop an activity schedule for residents suffering from mental illness in PMS.

Activity:

o Each student had been given the Xerox copy of disability tool.

They got a demonstration session on assessment tool from their faculty. The session aimed to make student aware of the literature and the practical use of it so that it would be helpful for them to assess the ability and disability of their assigned individual resident. On basis of which they can set their future activities with the residents.

o Students had been allotted one and half hour to get details

about the daily routine of their assigned residents. Afterwards, by mutual agreement student had to develop an

activity schedule for their residents. The activity aimed to engage the residents in a fixed fruitful routine. The ideology behind this is not to give space for the client to waste their whole day monotonously or by doing nothing. Aim is to groom them for their better recovery and rehabilitation.

o Separate files were given to each student. The file needs to be

maintained with profiling of the resident and weekly activities done with residents. The strategy is to develop a documented profiling of all residents. This can be helpful for the student’s academic learning, PMS office records and also it will help to reflect numerous ideas which can be practiced with future residents too.

Response:

All students showed interest to learn the assessment tool.

All residents cooperated well and mutually cooperated to

develop their activity schedules by students. 5th day,

Objective: To follow up the daily activity, modify and make pleasurable to the clients

Activity:

o All students of G-SET did one to one follow up session for one

hour with their respective cases to see the activity schedule has been getting followed or not. It would help the residents to spend their time productively and also help them to develop a sense of discipline. Students together with residents tried to identify the gaps in the days in which they left out with nothing and also tried to identify new activities to fill the gap. The activity scheduling will give a structure of each day of the inmates which will help a therapist to understand gaps and introduce more activities gradually in future.

o A group activity was conducted in recreation session to make

sure the residents should get the sense of leisure and also to provide a space for developing their socialization and interpersonal skills.

Response:

Residents showed their sincere attitude towards their assigned

students and reported about their daily activities.

Some residents voluntarily suggested some activities in the
