Being an innovator isn’t easy. It requires us to see into the future, keep up with changing codes and standards and pioneer new products that our customers need. The power of innovation has been our key to success for the past 110 years.

With a team of highly qualified engineers, we take on challenges of all sizes for our products to meet or exceed the strictest codes and standards. We not only invent the most innovative products,

we make sure they perform to higher-quality standards than our competition. That is why I am not reluctant to announce our plans for the approaching 2010 lead-free requirements.

California and Vermont have already passed separate legislation to limit the lead content of plumbing fixtures and fittings products to a maximum weighted average of 0.25%, effective January 1, 2010. I am certain other states will soon follow their lead.

A few of our competitors were uncertain how they would support these mandates. At Viega, we

Dan Schmierer

already prepared for it. A large majority, 66% of our potable water products already meet the upcoming 2010 lead-free requirements. All of our PEX tubing, PolyAlloy insert fittings, ProPress copper fittings, ProPress Stainless fittings and pipe, MANABLOC and MINIBLOC meet the approaching

lead-free requirements.

The Viega products (bronze fittings, bronze valves and brass insert fittings) that do not already comply with lead-free requirements are now being manufactured utilizing new Zero Lead alloys.

The Zero Lead alloys we have chosen have excellent resistance to corrosion and dezincification. Our Zero Lead fittings will be certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 61 Annex G as containing less than 0.1% lead. Other products may look like ours, but I guarantee they do not measure up to Viega’s standards for quality, performance and reliability. Once again, our Zero Lead products will not only meet industry standards, our products will exceed them.

Thank you for sharing in my excitement as we approach the launch of this new product offering. If you would like additional information, visit our Zero Lead website at zeroleadfacts.com. We created this website as a tool to help guide you through upcoming lead-free mandates.

In the last Viega Voice, I had an opportunity to share some of our critical success factors that have allowed Viega to enjoy many successes in our 110-year history. These critical success factors include: the right people, good products, leading-edge manufacturing, state-of-the-art logistics, a strong financial position and a willingness to re-invest in our company’s future.

It is not enough to simply practice or possess these fundamentals, but it is essential that all of these factors work in conjunction with a clear company mission and vision that is customer focused. Equally important is that this customer-focused mission and vision are clearly communicated throughout the organization.

Since our entry into North America a decade ago, we have grown from a small sales office in Bedford, MA, to almost 500 employees and include Viega

Dave Garlow

sales offices throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean Basin and South and Central America. In the early days of Viega in North America, we all had a vision and we knew our mission. Both statements were clear and simple. The vision was to be a leading supplier in our industry and the mission was to get there by providing the highest possible level of customer service and quality products to our customers.

Part of our long-range planning process is to review our mission and vision statements and revise when necessary. Although these statements may change somewhat over time, I can say with certainty the underlying philosophy of providing the highest levels of service and products to our customers will not. It is this level of service and products that drives our customers’ satisfaction, which in turn, allows re-investment for an even stronger future.

I am very optimistic and excited about the coming year. I would like to take a moment and thank you for your past and continued support. Thank you for your loyalty. You are a vital part of our growth, our mission and our vision for a mutually profitable future.

Houston, TX- Randy Mitchell at Evergreen Plumbing re-piped fittings at National Oil Well-Varco. The re-pipe work was done on semi-conductor cooling towers utilizing ProPress XLC 1 1/2" to 4" fittings.

Johnson City, TN- The Franklin Woods

Community Hospital (FWCH) is a $78 million new construction project. FWCH will be the first LEED-Certified building in the Tennessee region and one of the few LEED-Certified hospitals in the country. Viega ProPress fittings and ball valves from 1/2" to 2" can be found inside.

Kansas City, MO- LPG Ventures went

out on a limb and used ProPress Stainless for the first time on a 47-ft. aqueous ammonia tank. The total completion time for the project was five days before shipping and the Viega ProPress Stainless piping was installed in only four hours. The completed tank was shipped and is installed at the U.S. Salt facility in Watkins Glen, NY.

Porterville, CA- Ennis Homes will

display Viega PEX connections and tubing in its designer showroom. The MANABLOC System will also be offered as an option inside Ennis Homes.

Southern CA- The Viega National

Accounts team is pleased to report that Pulte Homes has chosen Viega’s Bronze PEX Press System as the plumbing system of choice for all of Southern California’s Del Webb and Pulte Homes projects.

Norfolk, VA- BAE Systems is a ship

repair facility located in Norfolk, VA, repairing everything from small military vessels to large military and civilian cruise ships like the 990 ft. long Disney Magic. BAE Systems has come to depend on carbon steel (sch 10) welded pipe for its dry dock ballast liquid level indicator lines. The problem: After several years of use, river water corrodes the carbon steel pipe, so pipefitters have to enter the large ballast tanks and make repairs. According to Jay Beeler, BAE dock master, welding one section of pipe can take a pipefitter an average of two full weeks. BAE decided to use ProPress Stainless for a trial period, and the same pipefitters took only two days to finish the repairs vs. two weeks of welding.

Birmingham, MI- Derocher, a custom

builder in Oakland County, MI, The Somerset Collection, a high-end mall in the area, and Dominick Tringali, architect, have teamed together to build a high-end, LEED Certified, “Green” show home known as the The Somerset Collection Show Home. A Viega competitor was willing to donate radiant products for the show home for free, but the mechanical contractor on the job, Phil Trzos with Otto Trzos Co., was so loyal to Viega that he selected to use our ProRadiant products over the competition. Thank you, Phil!

Dallas, TX- Viega has again been

nominated for an A-D Supplier award and won. Last year Viega won the award, A-D Supplier of the Year - Performance. This year, Viega won the Supplier of the Year - Marketing Excellence award. Winners were announced and awards were given at the 2009 PHCP North American Meeting held in Dallas, TX, on October 19 - 22.

Ft. Worth, TX- Brandt Engineering

installed 1/2" to 4" ProPress fittings for Fort Worth’s new Reptile Aquarium that opens early 2010. Our friend, Josh Sperling, was the project superintendent on the job, just as he was for the U.S. Veterans Hospital. Viega District Manager Jaime Gomez always made sure he was available in case there were any questions on the jobsite.

Suffield, CT- ABC’s hit television series,

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has frequently featured products manufactured and donated by Viega.

The most recent “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” partnership just took place in Suffield, CT, where a Viega MANABLOC water distribution system was installed to supply water for the Hills family of 13.

College Station, TX- AG Plumbing installed 24, 30-port MANABLOCs

on Floor 3 of a new Best Western Hotel that feeds and controls all 100 rooms of the new hotel. The owners of the Best Western were in favor of installing the MANABLOC water distribution system because they liked the idea of being able to shut off a single room for repairs without having to disrupt service to other guests.

Ft. Worth, TX- A new U.S.

Veterans Hospital is being built in Fort Worth, TX, and ProPress fittings are part of the installation. Josh Sperling of Brandt Engineering supervised the installation of 1/2" to 4" ProPress fittings throughout the project. Sperling explains why Viega ProPress fittings are his

preference: “Unlike estimating man hours for 1/2" to 4" solder joints, which can vary from person-to-person as well as technique, ProPress helps more accurately estimate man hours on each joint, knowing that it only takes four seconds to make a press and it is consistent from person to person.” Accuracy like that is important, especially when working on a building that will soon provide care to men and women who have served our country.

Consolidation- the contraction of the marketplace as contractors, distributors and competitors continue to be absorbed by others. And while there are

many other “ation” words that come to mind for Viega Canada, the most powerful continues to be Diversification.

The five-year strategic plan (prepared in 2008) stated a short term objective (1-2 year horizon) identifying the need to

have specialized distribution focusing exclusively on key products such as ProPress Stainless, ProPress Gas and ProPress Marine. “I am pleased to report that in spite of the recession, this objective has been met and that our aim of diversifying and strengthening our distribution base continues to meet with success,” said Evans. This speaks strongly to the fact that Viega products represent a significant business opportunity

for distributors and deliver on their promise of value (and profit) for end-users. Further product introductions, such as the launch of ProRadiant in Canada, will carry that momentum forward into 2010.

As part of the launch of ProRadiant, 19 Canadians attended the hugely successful September Radiant

Training Week at Viega’s Educational Facility in Nashua, NH. This is the first-ever group from Canada to participate in a Viega radiant training. The feedback from attendees was phenomenal and even prior to departing the training, many orders for product were confirmed from these new customers. “This is proof not only of the quality of our training and a testament to the abilities of our training staff, but to the importance of continuing to utilize our training resources as an integral part of our sales effort,” said Evans.

Mauricio Miranda Distributors approved the Viega materials quote, complete with ViegaPEX tubing and PureFlow fittings, in mid-March 2009 for the following reason: “This product was selected for the project because of its high-quality indices, such strict rules for its manufacturing, ease of installation and competitive cost in the local market.”

When Viega representative Carlos Ramos heard a brand- new Sheraton was being built in San Juan, PR, he saw an opportunity: an opportunity to prove the timesavings of the Viega PureFlow system. Company owners of BLDM, in charge of the mechanical and electrical portions of the project, were unfamiliar with the PureFlow system. They needed to be convinced. Once Carlos installed ViegaPEX tubing in a mock-up room of the jobsite, the owners no longer needed convincing. They saw immediate time-savings.

Nestor Nadal, project engineer on the jobsite, explained, “This is our first time installing ViegaPEX tubing and we have been having much success with it. It doesn’t require much training and not one pressure test has failed at one of the fittings.” The most convincing statement of the interview was when Nadal said, “The guys love the product. It is another technology they can say they know how to use. Viega installations in Puerto Rico and Mexico are

really starting to heat up! Here are a few projects we are particularly proud of.

MEXICO

Juarez Productive Penitentiary

The municipality of Juarez decided to build a penitentiary in early 2008, with

the goal of being “productive”. Productivity in this case means sentenced inmates may have the advantage of working in exchange for financial compensation. This, in turn, helps reduce high costs associated with operating and maintaining the security compound, amounts that are allocated to government

resources obtained by way of collecting taxes from the citizenry. Families of the inmates then receive a portion of the financial reward generated by the working time of the sentenced. This is a model that is going to be implemented nationally.

The complex has a capacity for 2,400 inmates housed in eight buildings, which, together with

other support buildings (such as customs, revenue, classrooms, infirmary, kitchen, laundry and workshops), have a combined total area of 45,000 square meters.

Besides the workshops, the central buildings (where the cells are located) were designed under the concept of prefabricated elements. It took a period of six months

for the special team of certified architects from Escala del Norte to design the project. The project was developed by general managers Jose Garro and Benito Rodríguez.

After several appointments and meetings in Juarez, Viega was given plans to make the hydraulic volumeter and put together a materials list with support from Viega District Manager Ruben Cerda.

Eiffel Mexico construction under the direction of Jorge Dena, who, as general contractor, specified Viega as a result of our experience, capacity and supply costs as a supplier of materials for the items of cold-water, hot-water consumption, supply and return

It makes us more marketable as a company and as installers.”

ViegaPEX tubing in 1/2" and 3/4" sizes was installed inside the Sheraton, and BLDM also incorporated 1" and 2 1/2" ProPress fittings in the design. The Sheraton Puerto Rico Convention Center Hotel and Casino opens this November.

Atlantis, High-Rise Luxury Apartments Long time Viega supporter Jesus Herrero of ElectroMec Corporation is no stranger when it comes to Viega ProPress or Viega PureFlow installations. He was one of the first contractors to begin installing the systems in Puerto Rico. Why does Herrero trust the Viega brands? “I like the all-mechanical connection,” said Herrero. “It eliminates human error.”

The certainty Herrero feels when installing Viega systems is what led him to install both systems for the plumbing and mechanical portions of the 22-floor, 169-room luxury apartments of Atlantis in San Juan, PR.

Herrero and his team of installers selected 1/2" to 1" ViegaPEX tubing and 1/2" to 4" ProPress connections. Once again, the systems proved their reliability. “I have been using Viega products for two years and I haven’t once had a problem. I can leave a job and never worry about callbacks,” said Herrero.

Reported by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) in its July 2009 market report, the U.S. wind energy industry installed 1,210 megawatts (MW) of new power

generating capacity in the second quarter. That figure brings the total of wind energy added this year to just more than 4,000 MW – an amount larger than the 2,900 MW added in the first six months of 2008. It appears wind generation may help us through difficult economic times by creating jobs and eliminating our dependence on foreign sources of fuel.

With 50 Olson Plumbing & Heating employees working on the project, it took only a

matter of months. By prefabricating all of the ProPress Stainless connections, Trapp’s team was able to pipe the 500,000-square-foot production area and 50,000-square-foot internal area of the Vestas Pueblo facility in merely

five months, from January 2009 through June 2009. John Hill, superintendent of Olson Plumbing & Heating, oversaw the installation of ProPress Stainless at the Vestas facility. “The prefabricated piping lines had to be trucked to the Pueblo facility from the Olson Plumbing and Heating headquarters in Colorado Springs. We had to truck the pipe on 40-foot racks. It was a sight to see,” said Hill. Equally impressive was the actual installation of the prefabricated piping runs. “We worked in two teams of three and installed 21 miles of stainless pipe. Our crew had to be hoisted as they were making the connections,” said Hill. The Vestas project may have been monstrous in size, but Trapp’s team approached the project with the same goal in mind as it does with any project – total owner satisfaction. “We complete our projects on time and

An economy once dependent on foreign sources of fuel is being replaced by a new economy powered by wind, solar and geothermal energy. The most recent example comes from Pueblo, CO, where Denmark-based Vestas is building the world’s largest wind tower manufacturing plant.

With more than 38,000 wind turbines in 63 countries, the manufacturing plant in Pueblo marks the largest single investment the company has ever made. No doubt, Vestas is ready to help the U.S. wind energy market move forward. With so much money on the line, Vestas needed to find a team of qualified contractors and engineers

to trust with its investment. Olson Plumbing & Heating was selected to install the industrial gas and compressed air portions of the project.

Michael “Mike” Trapp, president of Olson Plumbing & Heating, wanted to install materials as innovative as the turbines soon to be manufactured at the Vestas Pueblo location. Trapp knew Viega ProPress Stainless fittings would satisfy the innovation requirement he was looking for. The problem – the

engineer hadn’t intended on using the Viega ProPress Stainless System. “The engineer was leery of using ProPress Stainless because it was new to him,” said Trapp. Trapp explained to the engineer, “ ‘We don’t use anything other than ProPress… it is a superior product… if Olson is doing the job, we are installing ProPress.’ It was that easy; we started placing orders for 1/2" to 4" ProPress Stainless fittings and pipe immediately.”

One key to business success is partnering with people and businesses that help benefit the organization. Trapp is thankful for the relationship he has in place with his wholesaler, Wholesale Specialties, Inc. “We owe a lot of credit to Wholesale Specialties. Viega to begin using Mc4

software for CAD designs

Every day, members of the Viega Technical Services department are quoting and designing jobs. Now they have found a way to decrease their turnaround times and provide Viega customers with more detailed drawings. By Q4 2009, Viega will switch to a brand-new design software developed by Mc4.

Mc4 is the most advanced HVAC design software on the market. The fully integrated program makes radiant and snow melt drawings easy. It can easily calculate heat loss and radiant cooling designs, and also has AutoCAD OEM capability.

“This is an exciting time for the Viega Design Services team,” said Mark Parent, Viega director of technical services. “With Mc4 software we are going to

increase our efficiencies, make better use of our time, provide enhanced visuals and, above all, improve our design services to provide best-in-class support to our customers.”

Reduced turnaround times

“Every company uses some sort of internal design tool to quote and design jobs. Our previous design tool required us to replicate AutoCAD drawings by hand,” said Parent. With the new Mc4 software, calculations and drawings are entered as one. The software integrates all calculations, draws the circuits and figures spacing on its own. Viega designs will not only be drawn faster but they will be more accurate. Parent

expects his Design Services team will see a 33% increase in its productivity over the course of 2010.

ASTM International, originally known as the American Society for Testing and Materials, is one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world. ASTM and other standards agencies, through well-established procedures including a series of peer reviews, create established national consensus standards that are used as the basis for listing products with third-party testing agencies such as NSF International. Compliance with and listing to the standards is what gives everyone peace of mind that a product or system has been appropriately tested and reviewed.

ASTM F877, titled Standard Specification for Crosslinked Polyethylene (PEX) Plastic Hot- and Cold-Water Distribution Systems, covers “requirements, test methods and methods of marking” for PEX hot- and cold-water distribution systems and their components. The ASTM Web site, www.astm. org/standards, explains that the F877 listing describes components as: tubing and fittings intended for use in residential and commercial, hot and cold potable water distribution systems as well as sealed central heating, including under-floor heating systems.

ASTM F877 is particularly important for proprietary systems in which there is not a separate standard for certain components of the system, such as MANABLOCs or PEX Press sleeve fittings. ASTM F876 covers the PEX tubing but compliance and listing to ASTM F877 then gives a system approval to PEX MANABLOC and Press sleeve fittings systems. Because the Viega PEX and components are tested as a system, the use of Viega PEX is required in order to meet model code requirements for a listed system.

The listings for the MANABLOC product as found at www.nsf.org/ listings specifically states: “Product tested and Listed for use with ViegaPEX, ViegaPEX ULTRA, ViegaPEX Barrier and Viega FostaPEX tubing only”. If the MANABLOC is used with tubing other than Viega tubing, there is no listing for the system unless the other tubing manufacturer has gone through listing to ASTM F877, with its tubing and the MANABLOC or Press sleeve fittings. No manufacturers have done that.
