What Are You Waiting For?
Let me share with you a remarkable story about a young man named Ryan Hreljac. He lives in
On-tario, Canada. He’s now 19 years old. But his remarkable story began when he was just six years old.
“Six year old Ryan Hreljac listened intently as his teacher talked about how without
access to clean water, people become ill and sometimes even die. ‘Every penny helps,’
the teacher said, explaining that a penny buys a pencil, ‘and $70 buys a well.’ Ryan
ran home and begged his parents for $70. They told him to earn it through extra chores,
and so while his brothers played, Ryan cleaned for two hours. He got $2.
Four months later, he finally had $70, and his parents set up a meeting to donate the money.
Ryan nervously handed over the cookie jar holding $70. ‘There’s an extra $5 here,’ he said.
‘You might want to buy some hot lunches for the people making the well.’
By age nine, he had raised an additional $2,000 to help dig a well for an African school. When he
and his parents visited the new well, grateful villagers lined the entire last mile.
Well, out of this young boy’s caring heart and passion for providing clean water in Africa a foundation was
formed called “Ryan’s Well Foundation.” It has raised millions of dollars; has 730 water projects in 22
countries, and brought safe water and sanitation to over 800,000 people. Isn’t that amazing?
If Ryan Hreljac at six years of age (and subsequently) can make such a difference, then it’s clear
that each of us can do something to help the hurting in our world – maybe even the personal one we dwell
in!
After years of living (in a not so perfect world) I still believe in the ability of individuals making a
difference:
I’ve seen the selfish become generous.
I’ve seen the emotionally depleted find strength for daily living.
I’ve seen the wounded and hurting find healing.
I’ve seen the addicted give up their addictions and start anew.
I’ve seen the angry and unforgiving start forgiving.
I’ve seen the callous become caring.
I’ve seen the cynical become optimistic.
I’ve seen the morally irresponsible begin to act responsibly.
I’ve seen the spiritually apathetic become spiritually alive.
I’ve seen those with little meaning and purposes find reason for living.
“The meaning of any event or action can be measured in the difference it makes – if it doesn’t make
any difference, it doesn’t have any meaning.”

Veterans’ Affairs (VA)
Please be aware that CH 30 VA pays
directly to the student, unless you are a
part of the new VA CH. 33. The CH 30
VA student is then responsible for
pay-ing the school. The majority of the time,
the VA pays in monthly increments. To
generate those payments, the student
must verify at the end of each month that
he/she remained in class for the certified
number of hours. There is an automated
system to verify by phone at
1-877-823-2378. You may also contact Wendi
Dunlap at 940-855-4322 if you need any
additional information. Please be aware if
you are using TA & Top-Up, that does
not go through our office. We do not
certify you for Top-Up, and they do not
pay the school directly.
Just as a reminder to financial aid students, the process to
obtain Federal/State Financial Aid takes 8-12 weeks to
complete. All financial aid students MUST have an award
letter before using financial aid at registration. All students
MUST have an admission letter from the University to be
eligible for Financial Aid. Please see a counselor for further
clarification.
The 2011-2012 Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA) is now available. A complete FAFSA must be
submitted to the Federal Student Aid Information Center
requesting that the analysis be sent to Wayland (CODE #
003663). The form may be obtained and submitted over
the Internet from the website: http://www.fafsa.gov.
However, the student must still see the Financial Aid
Advisor. For more information about financial aid, please
contact Pam McDaniel by calling 940-696-0404.
