GUIDELINES:

ELEMENTARY PROGRAM ART MATERIALS and Equipment

The information provided is based on recommendations for

a new school with 24 classrooms, and serves as a base line to

prepare for a visual art program provided by a specialist.

If the numbers are used to refurbish an existing art program,

inventory school art supplies and order according to units needed

based on number of classroom serviced plus the specialist’s

needs.

Art Supplies are listed under the List I Catalogue; Classroom

Supplies, i.e., butcher paper, railroad, board, oak tag are

listed under List 7; Elementary Textbooks and Work books ,

i.e. recommended art texts and visuals, List 17.

An Art Department Complaint Form is provided for the purpose

of reporting inferior supplies received through the district

bidding process, within the last year. It is helpful to provide a

sample with a complaint form. A form is posted on the district art

website.

1. Inventory art supplies and record number of units requested on

the underlined space, based on each item’s unit identification.

2. The Anchorage School District orders all school supplies a year in

advance. Supplies received for this school year were ordered in

October of the previous year and purchased in July, after the fiscal

year budget is available for the current school year. Be responsible

when ordering art supplies for the next year, whether or not you

will be in the same position the following year.

For time management purposes, it is important to know your

principal’s expectations if you are submitting an art order limited to

the art program or if your review includes an amount for all

classroom use in the school.

3. To begin the supply ordering process, obtain a copy of the art

supply list ordered for the school the prior year. The school

secretary will provide you with this information.

4. Inventory art supplies in all art storage areas. Time spent

inventorying supplies can be reduced if you do count each item;

estimate amounts on hand and make note of this figure beside each

item.

5. Compare last years order with the current inventory to determine

supplies needed for the next year. As you become familiar with art

supplies and materials in schools, undoubtedly, you will be more

comfortable calculating orders.

6. It is important to carefully observe the PRICE and UNIT columns.

For example: Construction paper is listed per package. A case equals

25 reams or packages. Order items by the case as much as possible

to minimize any potential confusion in the district warehouse.

7. Four choices of clay are pugged and ready for use: two low‐

fire earthenware, one white and one red, cone 05, a medium

fired stoneware clay‐Westwood #WC52, buff, up to cone 5, and

a Terra Cotta Stoneware clay with grout, rich red brown, up to

cone 5.

All four clay bodies can be fired in the school electric kilns. Order

appropriate cones if you have an older kiln. The newest

computerized kilns do not require “setting” with a cone; however,

the recommendation is to adjust a cone on a shelf each time to gage

the firing accuracy.

8. The best quality linoleum is available in a roll, not as individual

blocks, mounted or not mounted. The recommendation is to

substitute with FLEXIBLE PRINTING PLATE. Students can carve

and imprint this material with minimal, safe tools. POLY

PRINTMAKING PLATE, resembling meat and vegetable tray

materials, is another useful printmaking plate option, as well as

camper tape and masking tape.

9. Finger paints serve a duel purpose in the elementary art program:

paint for finger painting and “ink” for silk screen painting. Prang has

been specified because it is suitable for both uses.

10. Feathers, beads and sequins are not listed in the List 1 Catalog.

To maintain a level of quality, these items may be purchased by

placing a direct order with a reputable supply source, or, small

purchased items using petty cash if per‐authorized by the principal.
