Work Group Updates:
Communications Kim Than
o Kim provided Natalie with the update. The workgroup met through e-mail this month. This workgroup, specifically Kim at Mosaic Family Services, was really instrumental in planning the Bachman Community Forum. The forum was attended by about 12 parents and 10 youth at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store. While we know that the turnout wasn’t huge, it was still a successful event in our eyes due to the high level of engagement with those who did attend. Evaluations of the event were positive.
Also, Janet and Natalie will be scheduling meetings with our congressional representatives this summer, with follow up meetings planned for the fall. These meetings will be to educate them about the coalition and our local efforts.
Our unmet needs are more members and participation. We currently have 15 members signed up on the roster, but only about 3 or 4 regularly attend meetings.
Thanks to Noel and Lily from Mosaic for translating materials into Spanish. Time and date of next meeting is TBD. Kim will be calling each member individually this week to set up the next meeting.
Epidemiology (Data) Karyn Kelbaugh
o Karyn provided Natalie with the update. The workgroup met on May 9th via web meeting on Google+ Hangout. The online web meeting worked great. We discussed the status of the drug info sheets that we are working on, particularly selecting data highlights that are relevant and can lend themselves to calls to action.
o Also, the CORE data questions about perception of harm and disapproval have been submitted to DISD for consideration for inclusion to the 2013 YRBS student surveys.
o We are still waiting on 2011 Census estimate data to complete our BHAG number update. That data should be available by the end of the week (according to census.gov).
o We set a deadline for the 2012 updates for the Drug Impact Index
(September 2012) and discussed adding more data such as Poison Center reports related to Rx drugs. This year we will be printing the DII again. o Next meeting: No set date, but most likely it will be during the first week of
July.
Law Enforcement Richard Wilson o The workgroup met on May 14th. Lt. Wilson shared the history about the DEA
Take Back initiatives. The April 28th, 2012 Take Back was the coalition’s 3rd
one to participate in. At our 6 collection sites, plus nearby Irving and Carrollton sites, we collected 2,133 pounds of unwanted/expired
prescription drugs. By comparison, at our 9 DADPP locations last October, we collected 427 pounds. Obviously, April’s event was a big success, due in large part to all of the promotion of the event. We anticipate that the DEA will schedule another for October 2012. If your agency wants to be considered to be a site for this fall, let Lt. Wilson know and we will work on coordinating that as police officers need to be present for the full 4 hours. A suggestion for the fall Take Back was to include directional signage at each location to help people find the location. Also, Sherri mentioned that she saw the Take Back advertised on electronic traffic signs in Flower Mound and encouraged the law enforcement workgroup to look into that for the fall.
o The next Law Enforcement workgroup meeting will be scheduled by Meeting Wizard.
Prevention/Education Cyndie Stanley o The workgroup met on May 7th. They debriefed from recent events (BuzzFree
PROMises Dress & Tux Giveaway and the Bachman Community forum) and talked about plans for upcoming events (World No Tobacco Day and summer activities).
o Also, DADPP was notified that we will be receiving a mini-grant from SAMHSA to do an Alcohol/ Underage Drinking Town Hall or Community Forum event. The workgroup is currently thinking this will be a back to school type of event and we are looking for locations, speakers, etc. If you want to be involved with planning this event, attend Prevention/Education workgroup meetings.
o The next meeting of the Prevention Education workgroup is June 4th at
3:30pm at The Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse.
Behavioral Health Leadership Team (BHLT) Update Beverly Carroll Beverly attended this meeting last Thursday, which was led by Commissioner Price. Topics of discussion were: Medicaid Level 15 Waiver, the status of the crisis, lack of
funding, and underserved populations (head injury, PTSD, and adolescents). The BHLT targets mostly mental health and is not focusing much on substance abuse. The DISD
Superintendent is going to be invited to participate for the next BHLT meeting. Diana Burns encouraged other coalition members to attend the meetings and stand up to make sure substance abuse is included and addressed, otherwise it will continue to be ignored. Recovery Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC) Update Diana Burns
The most recent Dallas ROSC meeting was held on May 14th. ROSC is the product of
SAMHSA and DSHS working for 10 years on the concept of recovery. The main emphasis is that recovery is possible, it’s proven. Recovery should be the focus, not just treatment. It’s about the continuum of care from prevention through recovery and addressing all the components that someone needs for a healthy life. The goal is for every community to have a ROSC. Peer support is key and was the main focus of the most recent meeting (the 3rd
meeting of the Dallas ROSC), specifically how to work with adolescents as peer recovery coaches. The approach includes mental health as well for dual recovery. There will be a free one week training held in Fort Worth to certify peers as recovery coaches, but there are
only 20 slots for all of North Texas and it’s likely full. The Dallas ROSC will meet again next month at a date/time/location TBD. For more information, contact Dolores White at [email protected].
