Norwegian Solution

Location - Lefdal Mine

The Norwegian Government

The project has been funded by the Ministry of Governmental

Administration and Reform and by Innovation Norway. Lefdal

Mine is also supported by the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

The Government and the datacenter industry both recognize

that Norway is about to become a leading global player within

the area of data handling.

Conditions in Norway are conducive to Norway becoming a “superpower” for green datacenters. 100 % renewable energy at a leading price level in Europe and natural cooling makes Lefdal Mine extremely cost effective. Add excellent infrastructure, stability, high competence, and extreme space and you have - The Norwegian solution!

100% renewable energy

Leading Green

Conditions in Norway are conducive to Norway becoming a “superpower” for green datacenters!

The IT industry today consumes more than 10% of all electricity in the world. The industry is responsible for 2% of worldwide emissions. Lefdal Mine and the Norwegian Solution have the ability to change this picture and make the

Cooling

The unique cooling solution offers 20-30% improvement over current leading edge designs operational or under construc-tion in Europe. The soluconstruc-tion cycles seawater from the nearby fjord through a heat exchanger for a closed fresh water circuit that cools the servers via the integrated cold air radiators. The seawater is picked up at 200 meters below sea level with a con-stant temperature of 8 degrees Celsius. The effect is based on the seawater leaving the facility at 12 degrees Celsius. The respective freshwater effect is 18 degrees in and 30 degrees out.

Connectivity

Network access is currently supplied by two providers with sepa-rate infrastructures. A third provider will soon be available. Both current suppliers can deliver multiple fiber runs of capacity from national commercial access points (NIX, BIX) to the nearby UNI-NETT connection points. Both suppliers have redundant paths to the local distribution point.

Power

Several hydropower plants in the vicinity of Lefdal Mine provide a redundant power feed with the capacity to provide the mine with sufficient power for any foreseeable future. The total pow-er production in the area is presently 12,7 TWh (renewable) of which 6.7TWh surplus production is presently exported out of the area. The current power supply has a statistical reliability of 99.97%, which is consistent with Tier-3 requirements.

Data Center Structure

The formation of the mine is laid out so that the spiral road provides direct access to each floor level. Each floor level consists of a central access - “Avenue”. The Avenue provides direct access to the chambers where data will be stored - “Streets”. Each Street is physically separated for security and fire reasons. The opera-tional benfits in Lefdal Mine are unique!
