Subject: Invitation to book talk about events in Himalayan region and spiritual journey we hope you will share with your mailing list
Greetings,
I am writing in hopes you will be able to share the information about this unique event, of interest to anyone curious about events inside Tibet and how the Tibetan cause is supported by making these events public. Is it possible for you to send this along to an email list of your students and/or those who would like to learn about such public events?
Also, If you have someplace on your premises that you could post the attached flyer, we would very much appreciate it. We at Rigpa San Francisco are excited about hosting this event and are eager to get the word out. Thanks so much, Betty Lynn Moulton
Email for distribution:
Rigpa Bay Area warmly invites you to January 30th book talk by Matteo Pistono, author of “In the Shadow of the Buddha: Secret Journeys, Sacred Histories, and Spiritual Discovery in Tibet”, scheduled to be published by Dutton on January 20.
This is Pistono’s story, told in his own words, for the first time. Part undercover reporting, part spiritual biography, this book takes readers deep into the heart of Tibet: how Tibetans live today, their rich spiritual past, the tenacity of their faith, and firsthand accounts of repression and abuse by Chinese authorities, smuggled out by one dedicated man.
“In the Shadow of the Buddha...” has been endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Peter Gabriel, Bob Thurman, Daniel Goleman and Eric Weiner, and received positive reviews from Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, and others..
If you haven’t seen the video that the publisher, Dutton, Penguin, produced about “In the

Dear All,Please find below a letter from Todd inviting you to sign up for Lobby Day. We are trying to streamline all the sign ups this year so I would really appreciate if you would use the "sign up online" link in the email below. This needs to be done individually by each participant so that we have each individual’s information for seeking appointments etc. Please feel free to get in touch with me directly if you have any questions or concerns. Also, very important to note - we will NOT be sending any attachments to emails. There is already one viral email that went out few days ago in Todd's name so PLEASE DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS. Forms and everything we send will be embedded in email and on our website. If in doubt, please just call or email.
Thanks again and we are looking forward to meeting all of you in DC soon. With warm regards,
Leslie

constituencies. This annual event is essential as a response to Chinese President Hu’s state visit to Washington, and to ensure that Tibet remains on the U.S. legislative agenda for the long-term.
Part of ICT's core advocacy work in Washington, D.C. is lobbying Congress and we are pleased to set up meetings for you with your Members of Congress. We will provide you lobbying tips and other materials to make your meetings as impactful as possible. ICT will also make available to you lobbying training sessions at our office in Washington, DC.
Because Congress has an intensely busy schedule in March, it is very important that we know who is coming as soon as possible. If you would like to participate,
please sign-up online now so that we can begin coordinating schedules and identify the correct Congressional Members to contact. The deadline for signing up is February 5, 2011.
I urge you to take this opportunity to make a profound difference to support Tibet and Tibetans, in Tibet and in exile, by meeting with your Members of Congress. Visit
www.savetibet.org to read about last year's Tibet Lobby Day and this ICT Blog post from a participant. And then sign-up today to join us for 2011!
Sincerely, Todd Stein

Subject: Jigme Gyatso: Urgent Actions Reminder
From: International Tibet Network <[email protected]> Date: Mon, January 24, 2011 6:52 am
Dear International Tibet Network Members,
International Tibet Network Members' Message,
24 January 2011
(Une version de ce message dans Google français seront envoyés séparément)
Amnesty International has issued an Urgent Action for Jigme Gyatso, which urges supporters to write to the Qushui Prison Governor and the Chief Procurator of the TAR. The action can be viewed here.
We encourage Tibet Groups to include these addresses in their letter-writing but strongly recommend that actions continue to be directed to Juan Mendez, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture (see urgent action below), Foreign Ministries and Beijing Embassy Officials.
Please find below a reminder of the recommended actions:
1. Urgent Action for Jigme Gyatso: Sign and promote the urgent action at
http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5380/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=5062. The action is directed at Juan Mendez, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and copied to Hu Jintao and Wu Aiying, Minister of Justice. To date nearly 1,500 messages have been sent.
2. Contact Foreign Ministers or Ministry Officials, and Beijing Embassy Officials alerting them to the news that Jigme Gyatso is in very grave health and urge them to raise his case immediately with Beijing officials appealing for his release on medical grounds. Please pass on any feedback
3. Ask your supporters to lobby their elected representatives, requesting them to join our demand that governments raise Jigme Gyatso's case with the Chinese authorities in Beijing.
Jigme Gyatso Background Information:
- ICT's Report, Fears for the life of Tibetan political prisoner tortured after speaking to UN Rapporteur, is available at http://www.savetibet.org/media-center/ict-news-reports/fears-life-tibetan-political-prisoner-tortured-after-speaking-un-rapporteur.

Jigme Gyatso [Chinese: 晋美加措, Pinyin Name: Jinmei Jiacuo], a 45-year-old former Tibetan Buddhist monk, is serving an 18-year prison sentence in Chushur (Chinese: Qushui) prison near Lhasa for "counter
revolutionary" activities.
Originally sentenced to 15 years in 1996, Jigme Gyatso received a three-year extension in 2004 after shouting pro-Dalai Lama slogans while in Drapchi Prison, Lhasa. His current known release date is believed to be 30 March 2014. Gyatso received the longest sentence of a group of five Tibetans who carried out various acts of peaceful resistance, including putting up a Tibetan national flag at Ganden monastery and discussing Tibetan independence.
Fears for Jigme Gyatso's safety were raised after he met and spoke with UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Dr Manfred Nowak, during an official prison visit in November 2005. Dr Nowak subsequently called for his release and stated in his official UN report about the visit: "Since he [Jigme Gyatso] has been convicted of a political crime, possibly on the basis of information extracted by torture, the Special Rapporteur appeals to the [Chinese] Government that he be released."
Soon after Dr Nowak's visit, reports emerged that Jigme Gyatso had been hospitalized in early 2006 for a period of several weeks and is now unable to walk properly due to a leg injury.
During his 15 years of imprisonment, Jigme Gyatso has endured severe torture on several occasions, including one incident in 1997 when he was beaten so severely that he could not move for several days.
