DUOMO

Among one of the most important (and majestic) Gothic buildings in the world, the church, constructed on and off over a period of 450 years (begun 1386) is the symbol of Milan. Built in the shape of a Latin cross, the cathedral is divided by soaring pillars into five naves, the largest of which measures 45m in height. It has 135 spires and its inside columns measure 3 and a half meters in diameter. To experience the Duomo at its most majestic you must ascend to the roof (either by

elevator or by steps) where you will be surrounded by an outburst of pinnacles, turrets and marble statuary and, naturally, the city’s famed golden “Madonnina”.

The cathedral is open daily 7am-7pm. Admission free.

Piazza Duomo. Info point via Arcivescovado, 1 (open 9am-6pm). M1-M3 Duomo

From Menaggio the boat crosses the Lake in about 15 minutes to land on the eastern bank, at Varena, terminus with Cadenabbia of the ferryboat service for vehicles, situated on a promontory at the mouth of the Esino stream.

The center, structured according to the design lay-out of Roman origin, and village fortified in the Middle Ages, still preserves town-planning and buildings of unique value. Here, in the nearby church of San Giorgio of the 14th century, later re-elaborated in the 17th -18th century, two tall villas rise.

Villa Isimbardi or dei Cipressi (of the Cypresses), 19th century reconstruction of an older building, with suggestive terraces and rows of Cypresses, and Villa

Monastero, directly in fronted over the waters of the Lake, its name comes from the original all-women monastery active here between the '200 and '500,

transformed later in residence in the second half of the 16th century at the request of Paolo Mornico.

Then the boat lands at Bellagio, at the top of the "Larian triangle", on the promontory that divides the Como branch from that of Lecco. Both the historic center situated at a higher level dominated by the Romanesque Basilica Of San Giacomo (enlarged in the Baroque Age) and the more recent arcade lake-front are all preserved intact. Among the aristocratic villas let's remember Villa Serbelloni, first castle, then country residence and transformed into villa at the end of the 15th century. Later once again restructured in the 17th and turned into a hotel during the last decade of the 19th century, it is presently appointed headquarters of conventions and study tours.

The park - the lake's largest- extends all over the entire promontory to the small town's mount with a splendid view onto the two branches of the Lake.

VENICE

Venice and its mainland are particularly rich of museums and

historical buildings of great artistic and cultural importance. Here you can choose among a wide variety of museums, churches, palaces and villas, Venice historic centre, the famous islands of Murano and Burano, the villas along the Brenta river and the beautiful landscapes the Miranese area, and of course less famous islands in Venice

Lagoon.

Floating between the sea and the lagoon is the beautiful island of the Lido of Venice. Thanks to the continual coming and going of ferries it is easy to get to - even by car. And there is nowhere like it in the world. A few minutes away from Venice, kilometres of golden sands offer something for everyone, and, following careful environmental works, a sea that has grown cleaner year after year: the beaches of the Lido Island have been awarded the important eco-label Blue Flag in May 2012, four years in a row. Venice is not only culture and beaches, let its parks and naturalistic oasis enchant you with their beauty and calm.

NAVIGLI MILAN

The Navigli of Milan are the artificial canals constructed between 1179 (Naviglio Grande) and the 16th century (Naviglio Martesana) with the purpose of making Milan accessible from Ticino and Adda

.

It was 1482 when Leonardo da Vinci, as soon as he arrived in Milan, was assigned by Ludwig II il Moro with the task to study a system that would make the

navigation from Lake Como to Milan possible. Leonardo, who already designed the system of the dams in order to solve the problem of height difference of the territory making the navigation possible didn’t miss the chance to draw some sketches that are preserved today in the Museum of Navigli.

Since then the Navigli were characterized by a continuous development particulary by the construction of new canals and dams. This is how the Navigli became a fundamental means of communication for the city of Milan.

Nowadays the term Navigli, in Milan, is identified with the two opened parts of Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese and in more general sense the area in between the two canals characterized by the many nightclubs

EL BRELLIN RESTAURANT : past and future

- In this alley, lanundresses came with their buckets and bended their knees on the wooden “brellin”, washing the customers clothes on the “brelle di pietra” (stone washboards).

- Beside the wash-house, was the drugstore, providing laundresses with hot water, brushes and soap.

- The old drugstore’s rooms today host the restaurant café EL BRELLIN, with its fireplaces and the peculiar wooden roof, preserving the unique atmosphere of this place.

- El Brellin overlooks the Naviglio Grande and the picturesque “Vicolo dei lavandai” (Launderer Alley). This building dates back in ‘700: here the laundresses came to buy water and soap. Four halls, two per floor, a cozy atmosphere granted by fireplaces and the peculiar wooden roof can host up to 200 customers – from a romantic candlelit supper to a majestic wedding party, from a business dinner to a private event.

- In the summertime, the fabulous garden in the alley can host up to 40 dining customers. - The kitchen serves tasty Milanese and Lombary specialities, classic, revisited and refined. - All wines are DOC.
