Living in France : taxes
The taxes (impôts) you will have to pay: - Income tax (impôt sur le revenu):
Based on your netto salary amount, around 23% of it.
It is not deducted from your salary (do not forget that point when negociating your salary). You have to fill in a tax form (déclaration
de revenus).
- Council tax (impôts locaux):
Based on the location, the kind of dwelling you are in, and the square meters. In the residence tax return, you will have to add the TV tax (redevance): around 160euros.
- Property tax (taxe d’habitation):
Living in France : social security
The National Health Insurance is called CPAM (Caisse Primaire
d’Assurance Maladie)
You must register to it if you live in France.
It covers sickness, maternity, accident, invalidity, death, family benefit and retirement.
Having a private mutual insurance may be helpful: some employers pay a part of it (deducted from your salary)
Working in France
- Often 13 months of salary
- Pay slip shows the amount of contributions (e.g. national health coverage, unemployment ) paid by the employee and the employer.
- Complementary health insurance
- Wide salary gap between categories (executives vs technicians, skilled workers vs unskilled workers )
- Minimum wage : 1343.77 € gross per month (1056.24 netto) - Income tax is not directly deducted from pay slip
Working in France
The legal working week length is 35hrs.
- The working day may not exceed 10hrs
- Any work carried out in excess of the official 35h/week is considered
overtime (heures supplémentaires) and must be compensated accordingly (25% under 43hrs, 50% if above)
- For one month worked, you get 2.5 days off
- 11 public holidays a year (jours fériés)

Working in France : legal matters
- Short term contract (CDD, contrat à durée déterminée): it can be one week, month or more (but 18 months maximum)
- Temp Term contract (CTT, contrat de travail temporaire): provided by temporary job agencies : can be very short
- Permanent Contract (CDI, contrat à durée indéterminée).
Your employer must give you a written employment contract
(contrat de travail) and every month you will receive your pay slip
(gross and netto salary appears) (feuille/fiche/bulletin de paye) The minimum wage in France (SMIC) is 8.82euros/hour (salaire brut). You can not be paid less than 8.82€ an hour.

Sales persons, managers, directors and administrative staff.
Hotel and Catering
Chefs and waiters, but low wages for beginners and long working hours.
Experienced reps IT
Analysts, developers, project leaders. Few opportunities if no IT qualifications.
Secretarial / PA
Still vacancies for persons with fluent French and good word processing skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Education is very important for employers:
- Close link between the education/diploma and the job
- Your level in French is important to get a job. You cannot work in France if you do not have a good working knowledge of French.

Pôle Emploi is the National Public Employment Service, it deals with placement and allowance.

- Register in the Pôle Emploi as a jobseeker, updating every month your
jobseeker’s account, check your allowance account.
- Look for job adverts (offres d’emploi) and apply online (vacancies located in France and out of France)
- Set up an account and subscribe job adverts, that you will receive
automaticaly on your mobile phone or e-mail address, and post up your CVs
- Get advices and leaflets (Guides pour agir) about CV, cover letter (lettre de motivation), interviews, negociating your salary, professionnal project

The interview : preparation
Always answer the questions in a positive way.
Do not talk too much, do not reply with a one-word answer such as yes or no.
If you don’t understand the question, ask the person to repeat Prepare your own questions in advance: this will make you look interested in the company.
Finally, ask what is the follow up procedure and when you could expect to hear from them. Thank them for their time.
Before leaving Slovenia
- Gather information about France before you leave
- Refresh your French
- Check the papers (passport, ID, diplomas)
- Allow enough money for the first expenses
- Contact your Eures adviser, your tax office and health department (european health card)
- Contact the administrations in your country to inform them about your mobility project in Europe
- Bring with you your U1 (E301) or/and U2 (E303) forms as well as your European social security card
