NOTE FROM YOUR DIETICIAN

Halloween is just around the corner! Get ready for costumes, trick-or-treating, and of course a lot of candy! Try some of the following tips to help your kids and the community enjoy Halloween without going overboard on the sweets.

 Make a plan with your kids before trick-or treating. Discuss spreading the candy over a month or more. Decide how much and what time of day your kids can have a special treat.

 After trick-or-treating, let your kids choose some of their favorite candy to keep. Consider giving the rest to a local shelter or sending it in care packages to the military serving overseas.

 Try handing out non-traditional treats that are still enjoyable.

 Whole-grain Goldfish

 Fruit snacks made with 100% fruit

 Mini Rice-Krispie treats

 Sugar-free gum

 Animal crackers or mini graham crackers made without trans fat

 Whole-grain cereal bars made with real fruit

 Halloween-themed items (stickers, rings, pencils, and tattoos)

Another fun tip this Halloween is to keep the pumpkin seeds after carving a jack-o-lantern. The seeds can be toasted for a tasty snack! One ounce of this healthy treat has five grams of protein, five grams of fiber and five grams of fat (four grams unsaturated fat).

Toasted Pumpkin Seeds

 Rinse seeds to remove pulp and strings

 Coat a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray

 Spread the seeds on the sheet

 Bake at 325°F for about 30 minutes or until lightly toasted

 Stir occasionally while baking

 Optional: Season with garlic powder, Cajun seasoning or other spices Have a safe and happy Halloween!
