Staffing Agencies
A staffing agency assists employers with their hiring processes, on a fee for service basis. Generally, agencies are paid by the employer for each placement. There is no charge for job seekers. Some agencies work to fill specific industry positions while others are general, and work to fill all types of jobs. They fill temporary contracts as well as permanent placements.
Considering the fact that not all agencies are alike, it is important to do your research before registering with an agency. There may be
restrictions that you are not aware of. Staffing Agencies are also known as:
Recruiters
Employment/Temp Agencies Placement/Personnel Firms
DO YOUR RESEARCH AND FOLLOW-UP
Talk to friends and / or family members about agencies & staffing specialists that they have had success with in the past To ensure that an agency is competent, professional and ethical, check to see if they are a member of the Association of Canadian Search, Employment and Staffing Services (ACSESS) at
www.acsess.org
It is important that you follow-up with the staffing specialist on a regular basis, about every 1 to 2 weeks
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM AN AGENCY
As agencies are working for the employer, make sure you use other job search methods
Be prepared to complete a series of tests as part of an agency application process, including personality and computer tests. Make use of the free computer tutorial CD’s in the Employment Resource Centres to refresh your skills or complete Microsoft Office practice tests
QUESTIONS TO ASK AN AGENCY
What types of positions
do you specialize in filling?
What is the application
process?
How would you prefer to
receive my resume?
Are there any tests that I
am required to complete?
Does your website
display the current job postings?
How long is the
assignment? (e.g. 3 days, 3 weeks or 3 months)
Do you also provide job
coaching?
What is the process if the
company wants to hire me full-time?
Is there a registration
fee?
Who will be contacting
me when the job becomes available?
