ON THE ANCIENT

VIA CLODIA

A hundred horsemen, a hundred montainbike riders and a hundred trekkers will reopen the Antica Via Clodia on May 10th, 2014, starting from Rome and getting to Grosseto on May 18th, for the closing evening of the MAREMMA WINE & FOOD SHIRE event, which is organized by the Grosseto Chamber of Commerce.

PRESENT PAST AND FUTURE

The consular road Via Clodia, as the Via Cassia, started from Rome and, through the street that today is called Via Trionfale, reached the area named La Storta, close to the ancient Vejo, now Isola Farnese area. Via Trionfale is today too much polluted to allow the passing of horses, pedestrians and riders. We recommend, instead, to use the bike path that from Ponte Milvio leads to Saxa Rubra, and afterwards to reach Isola Farnese thruogh alternative paths.

In the past Via Cassia and Via Clodia diverged at this point, but the new path leads to Cesano and then goes down to Bracciano lake towards the west lake shore, where there was the ancient Forum Clodii.

From here, continuing towards north, the trail meets Oriolo Romano, Blera, Tuscania, Canino, Pianiano (Cellere), Castro, Lamone wood, with his Sorgenti della Nova, where Lazio confines with and Tuscany, and then Pitigliano, Sovana, Saturnia, Scansano, Montorgiali, Istia d'Ombrone e Roselle.

The way from Roselle to Massa Marittima, Volterra, Calci and Camaiore will be reopended, too, in the future. And will get to Canossa, throughout Passo del Pellegrino, will climb over the Appennino, northward, towards Milan, or westward: reaching southern France and finally connecting to the Cammino di Santiago.

The web site www.anticaviaclodia.it, which is still in progress, will follow the entire event thanks to the contribution of anyone, first of all of the Società Geografica Italiana which is studying the storical and cultural aspect connected to the path.

But this year the event will be focused on the reopening of Via Clodia in a 260Km path, from Rome to Grosseto, during the period in between 10-18

We’ll ask to Rome Municipality to use Villa Celimontana (Italian Geographic Association’s headquarters) as starting point on Saturday 10th, and reach the Colosseo through Via dei Fori Imperiali, walk through Via del Corso, Piazza del Popolo, Via Flaminia, up to Ponte Milvio and Saxa Rubra, in a path of around 16 Km. After having settled in Saxa Rubra we’ll partecipate to a show about Butteri and have a barbecue. In the following days we’ll reach Grosseto through Istia, moving along Ombrone river, in the park of the same name; here will be prepared a

rest stop where people and horses will take a break before the

excursion in town, by torch light, of about 4Km, during the evening of Sunday 18th, and back to the park at around 22,30.

Special attention will be paid to the enogastronomic aspect during the whole journey, as in the land we’re going to pass through, history and food culture are deeply connected to each other, since Etruscan age. Each meal will give the partecipants the opportunity of tasting local dishes and wonderful wines, of course all from-farm-to-fork products! The final event itself will be a local cookery food fair.
