About the Newsletter

The College Impressions Newsletter began publication in 1983 with the goal of guiding students and counselors through the college admissions process by providing critical information about colleges and universities located across the country. The Newsletter contains Open House Notices dates, College Fair dates, descriptions about numerous Special Programs, and helpful advice. Rather than spending hours surfing the web yourself to find all of this detailed information, you can simply read our monthly newsletter. After 30 years of publication, this newsletter remains committed to positively impacting the futures of high school students by providing our subscribers with exactly what they need to know.

The New Conventional Wisedom on Choosing a College

Source: The College Connection Newsletter, Future Focus Educational Services, August, 2015 “money.com”, July 15, 2015

The value of a college education will continue to rise in the next 10 years, but if costs continue to rise at current rates, the median college ROI (Return On Investment) from public colleges will outpace that of the median ROI at private colleges by 24 percent by 2025. To view the PayScale’s College ROI Chart: http://www.payscale.com/college-roi/forcast A decade ago, private colleges were typically the better bet in terms financial return investment post-graduation. They would be rewarded with an amazing education, a far-reaching network and plentiful career opportunities. However, many of the students who believed that promise, graduated into an economic recession after taking out historically high student loans, and the expectations for how far their college education would take them professionally weren’t always met. According to PayScale’s most recent data, public colleges are now typically the choice in terms of financial outcomes post-graduation, than private colleges. Is it true for every student, every school? No. But, public colleges (as a group) currently out-perform private colleges ROI by 13 percent. In 2015, one year’s tuition and fees at a public university averages $9,139, while at a private university it averages $31,231. For most professionals, wages, however, are not increasing. As a result, we’re seeing some of the advice around how to approach college selection shifting dramatically. Instead of “study a subject you are passionate about,” it’s “study something that is at the intersection of what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs and what someone will pay you to do.” By focusing on outcomes, students are realizing that they can obtain a great education almost anywhere, if they put in the effort. It’s not just where you go, but how you spend your time in college that determines your career potential. The courses the student decides to take (and not take), the amount of work the student does, the intellectual curiosity the student exhibits, her participation in class, his focus and determination = all contribute far more to educational ‘outcome’ than the amenities and social life. You can become passionate about many different careers. There’s not one specific job that is your destiny. That’s the secret no one tells you. The concept of a “dream job” is out-of-date. Find purpose in what you end up doing.

Ambiguity

How do they get deer to cross the road only at those yellow road signs? How is it possible to have a civil war?

If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?

Global Youth Service Day, April 15 – 17, 2015

What is National Youth Service Day? Millions of youth participated in National Youth Service Day, the largest service event in the world in April 2010. They tutored young children, registered new voters, educated their communities about good nutrition, distributed HIV/AIDS prevention materials and met many more community needs through their service. National Youth Service day supports youth on a life-long path of service and civic engagement, and educates the public, the media and elected officials about the role of youth as community leaders.

Youth Service America and the State Farm Companies Foundation are offering 100 grants of $1,000 each to students, teachers and school based service-learning coordinators. To obtain an application, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Good Neighbor Service-Learning Award, c/o Written Request, Youth Service America, Suite 200, 1101 15th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20005 or go to the Web www.ysa.org/nysd for more information about National Youth Service Day.
