WE (Western and Eastern) Integrated Philosophy
Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CITCM) unique programs inte
-grate Western and Eastern ideologies to healthcare for an enriched learning experi
-ence.
Following the exclusive WE Philosophy, all students receive exten
-sive knowledge of
Western medicine
so they can utilize and compli
-ment western practices, effectively communicate with other healthcare
practitioners, and establish a successful acupuncture and TCM clinic.
Students benefit from a combined 750 hours of Western sciences and
medicine instruction.
The
Eastern philosophies
of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) have
been practiced for centuries. Using a wholistic approach, TCM is an
effective regimen for treating illnesses that afflict the mind, body and
spirit. Practitioners use a combination of herbal remedies, acupuncture,
massage and various self-healing techniques that help our bodies re
-cover from disease and improves our overall sense of well-being, im
-munity, and energy.
The foundation of Eastern medicine developed more than 2000 years ago. Early practitioners
discovered remarkable healing agents by examining their environment and the impact certain
properties had on the physiology, psychology and pathology of the human body. Their stud
-ies, passed on and refined over the ages, continue to focus on treatment and prevention by
enhancing strength, clarity of mind, and restoring a natural balance to the life-energy that runs
through each of us.
While both Eastern and Western philosophies strive for health, wellness
and healing, the two philosophies take a much different approach in
their methods. CITCM’s unique program
integrates Eastern and
West-ern
ideologies to better prepare students to offer an essential service.

When Dr. Xia Cheng established the Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CITCM) in Calgary, Alberta, she did so knowing that happiness and success are often achieved by reaching out and helping those in need. Dr. Cheng wanted to share her knowledge and passion with students interested in Eastern philosophies and the wisdom for healing the mind, body and soul to help build healthier and happier communities. Choosing a career path is never a simple task and deciding where to study is equally challenging. Dr. Cheng recognized this and was determined to facilitate an environment where she could offer training in TCM and Acupuncture so that others who share her passion could choose to learn with like-minded individuals.
As a result of Dr. Cheng’s efforts, a college, CITCM, was created in 2004 where stu
-dents could work together to learn in a collaborative environment. Under the direction of experienced practitioners, students are able to share their compassion and kind
-ness with one another and practice their skills in a supportive clinical environment. Governed under the College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta and the Alberta Enterprise and Advanced Education ministry, the Canadian Institute of Tradi
-tional Chinese Medicine is an interna-tionally recognized, post-secondary institution committed to educating students in the art and science of Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). As one of Canada’s premier TCM colleges, CITCM’s cur
-riculum challenges the best and brightest minds, combining theory with hands-on practice, as well as compassionate community focus for a rich educational environ
-ment. Graduates of CITCM are among the most competent practitioners of Eastern medicine in North America and in many cases are qualified to practice internationally. CITCM offers several programs including an Acupuncture Diploma program, a Double Major Acupuncture/Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine program, and a Bach
-elor of Traditional Chinese Medicine Degree program. For students interested in the healing properties of massage, optional massage therapy certifications such as Tui Na massage or the two year 2200 hours Western/Eastern Integrated Massage are also available (to be offered starting January 2014). CITCM is the only institution in Canada to offer an exclusive Western/Eastern philosophy of learning and truly is the premiere choice for specialized training and in-depth focus in acupuncture, herbal prescription and Chinese healing techniques. Our expertise in complementary health
-care education sets us apart from other institutions who can’t offer the comprehensive options CITCM delivers.
CITCM is committed to helping our students achieve their professional best through practical knowledge, hands-on internships, mentoring and relevant career guidance that features an emphasis on marketing, communications and business management. We encourage, empower and support our students’ different learning characteristics so that each student has the best resources available in order to succeed. Our friend
-ly and professional core faculty is educated to advanced Master’s degrees and PhD

Our instructors truly believe that education is a life-long journey and approach health and wellness using holistic methods and ideologies.
CITCM takes tremendous pride in offering small class sizes and the highest standards of curriculum which exceed provincial requirements. Our graduates have the credentials to work across Canada and often internationally after re

There is no other institution that offers this level of specialized training in traditional Chinese medicine with full financing opportunities available to our students to help cover the costs of post-secondary education. Our international partnership with the Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SUTCM) allows CITCM students the opportunity to pursue a five year Bachelor degree program awarded by SUTCM. The pro
-gram includes a ten month practicum studying abroad and working in a university hospital.
CITCM will continue to provide our students with a strong academic foundation and the necessary skills for a thriving career. Our graduates practice worldwide helping to teach, share and use their knowledge of traditional medicine to help those in need. We believe that fulfilled learning experiences lead not only to rewarding career paths but also contributes to an enhanced patient healthcare making our communities stronger, healthier and happier for all.
The Western/Eastern (WE) Integrated Philosophy incorporates Western and Eastern medical knowledge into holistic healing. Following CITCM’s exclusive WE philosophy, students receive extensive knowledge of Western medicine so they can utilize and integrate
Western medicinal knowledge, effectively communicate with other health practitioners in vari
-ous disciplines and establish a complementary acupuncture and TCM practice in a location of their choice.

The Acupuncture Diploma program
Natural, Holistic, Rewarding
Acupuncture is a specialized field within the scope of traditional Chinese medicine. CITCM’s Acupuncture diploma program offers an in depth study of acupuncture as well as Chinese medicine theory, diagnostic techniques, and Chinese herbal medi
-cine. The curriculum leads students to study both Chinese medicine as well as funda
-mental medical science courses such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, biochemistry and microbiology. The first year’s focus is on foundation study; second year’s study acts as a bridge that connects theory courses into clinic settings; third year students enter into internship which carries to the fourth year.
CITCM’s Acupuncture diploma program has a tremendous focus on clinical internship, which trains the students to accurately assess the patient and identify the best course of treatment. They will learn to treat ailments including internal, pediatric (Children’s illness), gynecologic (women’s illnesses), dermatology (skin disorders) conditions, etc. Students are encouraged to participate in a three months internship at a university hospital in China (optional) where students will study under the most experienced professors and doctors to gain extensive clinical training. This allows students to gain abundant clinical experiences. When students graduate from this program they will be confident and competent to establish themselves as an acupuncturist in the alternative health care field. CITCM Acupuncture diploma program graduates are eligible to write the Registered Acupuncturist examination facilitated by the College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta (CAAA).
CITCM Acupuncture diploma students are encouraged to study concurrently a Double Major career path in Acu

About Massage Therapy
Massage therapy is a profession that is rapidly growing. Currently, depending on your location, it is often difficult to find a massage therapist to book an appointment with. Even then you may have to wait a week or more to receive a massage treatment.
Healthy lifestyles are becoming the societal norm and the interest in natural health care is devel -oping in a similar fashion. Massage therapy is a component of this shift to wellness. People are seeking ways to eliminate pain and stress from their lives, speed up recovery from injuries, or even increase their flexibility.
As a massage professional you can expect to earn between $60 and $100 and average $80 per hour working in a relaxing, positive, and low stress environment. You should expect to see no more than 4 to 6 patients a day and often you will have the opportunity to schedule your appointments around your availability.
Massage therapists have many environments that they may work at including: Massage clinics;
Acupuncture clinics;
A clinic or health centre shared with other healthcare professionals (e.g., chiropractors, physical therapists, physicians, or sports trainers);
Sports clubs, spas or some hotels; Sports massage centres;
Industrial or corporate work sites; Owning their own massage clinic;
Massage therapists have many opportunities to work for others or themselves which allows op-portunity for a massage therapist to balance their lives, take care of children or elderly, or continue with further education in other health care professions. Many massage therapists come from other career paths such as business, engineering, or western health care to move away from the stress or travelling of one job to a career in massage with the emphasizes of balance and peace.
Massage is a profession that offers both personal and professional satisfaction where clients ap-preciate what you do and, at the end of a massage appointment, both the therapist and the client will feel positive and rewarded.
The WE Integrated Massage Therapy diploma program is a unique and comprehensive approach to massage therapy taught by qualified, expert instructors that prepares students to write the Alberta Massage Therapy Registration Exam.
The WE Integrated Massage Therapy diploma program is 2 years in length which is consistent with the standard massage requirements within the industry. The curriculum consists of over 25 courses and practicums allowing for students to become educated, confident, competent, and diversified professional massage therapist upon their graduation.
For interested individuals who are not looking to practice massage in a clinical setting, the WE Inte -grated Massage Therapy program has a 1 year (1113 hours) which give all of the basics of massage and allows students to practice and be licenced within the City of Calgary. Those who graduate from the 1100 hours program will not likely have the requirements to be covered under most benefit or insurance plans.
The We Integrated Massage Therapy diploma teaches a method of practice that is unique to the CITCM College of Massage. The We Integrated philosophy merges the best practices of both Western and Eastern massage principles of acupressure and other non-instrusive elements of TCM such as cupping and moxa. Graduates of the two program will have a range of skills to assist in the treatment of their patients. If you are interested in finding out more on how to become a massage therapist please contact the Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine College of Massage Registrar by phone at (403) 520-5289 or email at kenbarrett.citcm@gmail. com.

Testimonials
My plan is to achieve my degree, Doctor of TCM, and to continue taking supplementary courses here at CITCM. The curriculum is exceptional compared to other schools and the teachers here are highly qualified with a vast amount of experience. They are truly passionate about this profession and with giving their students the best education possible.
I enjoy the friendly, caring atmosphere. My classes and clinical experience have been interesting and fun!!!
Tricia Toner - 4th Year
The teachers at CITCM impressed me with their knowledge, while being approachable and helpful mentors and supervisors. CITCM has show a commitment to development and trying each year to make the courses and education better. The expansion toward community outreach with student clinics being held not only at the school but also at the Calgary Drop In Centre was invaluable to me. And the opportunity to go to a hospital in China for three months to top off my education will be the perfect ending to four years of study. The friendships I have made with both staff and students are lifelong. I have had a memorable four years and I would choose CITCM again if i had to do it over again.
Melissa Wecker - 4th Year
With a background in Western medicine, I felt my life needed a change and that Traditional Chi
-nese Medicine could offer me both the career and
philosophy that I was looking for. When
researching the many schools that offer courses in TCM I was very impressed with CITCM and since moving to Calgary from Eng
-land I have not been disappointed.

Now that I am in the program I would have to say I am satisfied with my choice of school. I find that the instructors have made the material easy to understand and also have a focus on practical information along with academic. The instructors are passionate about what they know and what they do. I’m glad I took the time to explore several schools as CITCM was the last one I found and has been my first choice.

-mately 4 hours in class and about 2 hours studying and completing assignments after normal class time. In addition to class time, there is a total of between 4 to 10 flexible scheduled clinical training hours per week.
Can I work while going to school?
Yes. Currently lectures are predominately 8 am until 12 noon allowing students to obtain employment during the school year to help with their finances.
When I complete the program can I run my own clinic?
Yes. That is the route that many graduates have taken and the school will help train you for that through the business courses that are part of the curriculum. Many graduates also find positions in other acupuncture and TCM clinics as well as with chiropractors and with other health professionals.
How much should I expect to earn when I start practicing?
There are many graduates that are earning between $60,000 and $80,000 within the first several years of graduating. Much of this depends on what avenue of employment the graduate chooses to follow.

FA
Q
“There is a very
positive learning
environment here”
Is there a residence at the school?
Currently the CITCM has an agreement with the Southern Alberta Institute of Tech
-nology (SAIT) for students attending at the CITCM to also live in the SAIT student residence. The residence is approximately 10 blocks away from the school making it within walking distance. Additionally, SAIT also has a C-train and public transit station on site. It is located next to North Hill mall which contains a Safeway and various department stores. Each unit has its own kitchen so that students are able to cook their own meals or to purchase meals at many of the restaurants in the area. For those who wish to live in an apartment many of the students are able to find ac
-commodations within walking distance of the school to minimize on transportation costs.
When I am a graduate, can I practice anywhere in Canada?
Yes you can. Currently you will have to pass the provincial registration exam to be licensed as an acupuncturist in Alberta. As a registered acupunctrist in Alberta, you can transfer your registration to BC or Quebec. Under existing provincial laws you will also be able to practice acupuncture in all the other Canadian provinces as well.
As a graduate from the CITCM, am I able to practice in United
States?
CITCM graduates will be able to practice in United States if they pass the required licensing exam. There will be an approval process to accept the CITCM to take the licensing exam but the curriculum meets the requirement for the licensing exam in United States.
Will CITCM administration help with foreign student
applica-tions?
We will provide all the required documentation to students to apply for a student visa once the applicant has been accepted into the program.
