We are delighted to bring you the Ards Business Awards for the second

consecutive year. The Ards area is vibrant, well supported, with an excellent range of retailers and businesses. Last year’s awards were a terrific success and we know there are lots of hidden gems out there for 2015. It’s important to recognise and reward both those individuals and businesses for their hard-work,

commitment and excellent levels of service to the shopper, visitor and resident. The Ards Business Awards 2015 will do that.

We are also delighted to have support from Ards and North Down Borough Council as our Principal sponsor, as well as many local businesses as category sponsors. We are grateful to those sponsors who have worked with us and supported us in this endeavour.

The Awards Gala date is confirmed as Friday 23rd October 2015 and will be held in the Queens Hall. Further details will be available in due course, but highlight the date in your diary!

We need YOU, the local businesses to enter the awards and put yourself out there for recognition of your hard work. These are your awards, for you and so your support is critical to their overall success. Judging is an impartial process that is undertaken by expert judging panels and mystery shopping visits. It is a totally independent process.

We thank you in advance for supporting the awards. We wish all entrants the very best of luck and we look forward to hearing about the worthy winners on 23rd October.

A word from Ards and North

Down Borough Council,

Principal Sponsor

I am delighted that Ards and North Down Borough Council, in its inaugural year, is the Principal Sponsor for the 2015 Ards Business Awards. We are especially pleased to support awards that recognise excellence in businesses and reflect the hard work and creativity of our local firms. This is the second consecutive year of the Ards Business Awards and we are confident that both the entry numbers and calibre of entries, will be terrific. Next year will see the competition increase further as we integrate existing awards schemes for the whole borough. So for 2015, I wish all

Newtownards participants the very best of luck and I look forward to celebrating success on the night.

Sharon Malcolm Hairdressing is thrilled to be sponsoring the Best Independent Retailer Award at the Ards Business Awards, an award which the salon won at the inaugural Ards Business Awards last year!

Current Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year 2014, Sharon Malcolm and her team are firm believers delivering first class customer service to its clients, which the salon has consistently achieved since opening its doors in Newtownards town centre 15 years ago. BOROUGH COUNCIL

1 April 2015 saw a dramatic change in local government. For us this has meant the merger of two legacy Councils to become Ards and North Down Borough Council. Our new council is determined to put you at the centre of all we do and we are setting ourselves ambitious targets and will be working closely with local businesses, residents’ groups, the community and voluntary sectors and other agencies to make these a reality.

Our objectives

We are concerned with both external impact and organisational development. We have grouped our external objectives under three headings – People, Place and Prosperity, delivery of which will be supported by inward looking objectives concerned with performance excellence.

Our Purpose and vision

Council’s aim is to make Ards and North Down the best place to live, work, visit and invest.

Our vision is that Ards and North Down will be a place for us all to be proud of which is more prosperous, vibrant, healthy, sustainable and where people enjoy an excellent quality of life.

PLACE

healthy, safe and sustainable

environment

Invest in and promote the borough's rich cultural

heritage and environment

We will strive to ensure residents’ benefit from a well-planned and designed borough with attractive local environments.

Each year we run a wonderful programme of events and activities, and continue to invest in our facilities: Pickie Fun Park remains one of the Top 10 Visitor attractions in Northern Ireland and North Down Museum attracts increasing numbers each year as does the Walled Garden.

Invest in and promote facilities and outdoor spaces

We will make the borough an attractive place to live/visit through a variety of recreational and sporting facilities and events. Bangor Aurora Acquatic and Leisure Complex, one of North Down’s biggest investments, has proved immensely popular and the development of Queen’s Parade will be our next major undertaking and act as a catalyst for regeneration in the heart of the town. Its design will put its residents first and will ensure this vibrant and diverse place has an enduring legacy.

The Public Health Agency (PHA) was established in 2009 with the overall aim of protecting and improving the health and wellbeing of the population and to reduce health inequalities in Northern Ireland. Workplaces represent an important setting that provide not just employment for an individual but one which can also encourage motivation, satisfaction, a sense of pride, purpose and identity, ultimately affecting an individual’s health and wellbeing and their quality of life. With the latest figures from the CBI showing that a staggering 172 million working days are lost every year across the UK to sickness absence, costing businesses around £13bn annually, there is good reason to focus on encouraging employers to create a healthy workforce.

The Public Health Agency is excited about sponsoring the ‘Investment in Health Award’ and sees this as an opportunity to engage with local businesses to begin that shift in attitudes which is necessary to ensure that employers and employees recognise not only the importance of preventing ill-health, but also the key role the workplace can play in promoting health and well-being. We have no doubt many of our local workplaces will meet the criteria and come forward to be recognised for the creative

work they have done. We would like to wish all the entrants the very best of luck.

They say location, location, location are three key elements when choosing where to live.

One of the main indicators of a good place to live is good places to eat, so whether it’s Café Culture, Pub Grub or Fine Dining, we in the estate agency business are always keen to see the industry performing well.

East Cottage Estates are a local estate agency offering a mix of residential sales, letting and management. Visit us at www.eastcottageestates.co.uk for more details.

We wish all the entrants the very best of luck and look forward to hearing about the finalists and winners at the gala night in October.
