Comfort Zone Camp is a nonprofit bereavement camp that provides a safe and

nurturing environment for children ages 7-17 that have lost a parent, sibling, or primary caregiver. Camps are offered free of charge. Registration is open to all from all cities and is required a grief counselors review of application.

The group meets on the fourth Thursday of each month from 7:30pm to 9:30pm except for November and December group will meet every 3rd Thursday of the month due to the Holiday season. People may call Kathleen Hannum, Carole Dyck, or Susan Hawkes at any time and leave a message for a call back on the answering machine. The

agency provides family support services for bereaved parents, siblings, and

grandparents in Los Angeles County to deal with the loss of the child only. There are no geographic restrictions. There are no charges for these services as all of the

services are provided by trained member volunteers and bereaved parents who themselves have gone through the same pain of losing their child. The site has

designated parking for people who have disabilities and is equipped with elevators and ramps; it is accessible, without special facilities, to people who use wheelchairs.

Description: Providing grief support services, education, resources and hope. All groups are fee based with a sliding scale; $30 per group/$1 per meeting. No Insurance

accepted. Groups are closed support groups and last between 6 months to 2 years. All new members should be assessed by the clinical staff to make sure correct group is selected for that individual. Groups are selected by age and the relationship of the person who died. Groups co-led by highly trained volunteers. Support groups are for children between 4 to 17 years of age and adults are from 18 years and up. The adult program offers groups for young widows/widowers, mid-life loss, later-life loss, parents grieving the loss of a young or adult child, adults grieving the loss of a parent. The children’s program offers support groups for death of a parent or sibling that are age appropriate and loss appropriate, and use various methods of grief expression, including art, music, play and poetry; school-based grief support groups are also available.

The program provides life problems counseling primarily for people who live in Claremont, Diamond Bar, La Verne, Phillips Ranch, Pomona, Rowland Heights, San Dimas, and Walnut. Services include a child abuse treatment and prevention program, an employee counseling assistance program, parenting classes and a school outreach program. There are no geographic restrictions. Counseling sessions cover a variety of concerns and problems such as premarital issues, marital difficulties, family

communication, parent-child conflict, child abuse, adjustments of childhood and adolescence, depression, grief and bereavement, anxiety and stress.

The Bereavement Support Group offers opportunities to develop a better understanding of grief learn healthy coping skills and share feelings with others who are experiencing loss. The program is coordinated by Pastoral Care and Spiritual Growth.

Bereavement support is offered in two sessions:

• An evening session, held every Monday (except holidays) in the Vesting Room at 7:00 p.m., facilitated by Russ Graham.

• A morning session on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month in the Small Lounge at 10:00 a.m., facilitated by Michael Reagan.

PROGRAM/ELIGIBILITY: The agency provides a variety of mental health outpatient services for people of all ages

who live in Claremont, La Verne or Pomona. Services include adolescent/youth

counseling, counseling for dual diagnosis, general counseling services, in-person crisis intervention, mental health evaluation, parenting skills development, psychiatric case management, psychiatric day treatment, psychiatric disorder counseling, a psychiatric mobile response team, and support groups for bereaved individuals. There are no geographic restrictions.

LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH: Spanish; counseling, psychiatric evaluations and day treatment are available in some Asian languages.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Call or walk in for crisis intervention services, for information about day treatment or for an appointment. Counseling clients are given psychological testing on Fridays, 8:30am to 5:00pm. The crisis team is available at the facility Monday through Thursday, 8:30am to 9:00pm; it is on call for emergency

response after-hours, and Friday through Sunday, 24 hours per day. The day treatment program operates services Monday through Thursday, 9:00am to 2:30pm, and Friday, 9:00am to 12:00 noon. FEES/PAYMENT SOURCE Fees are set on a sliding scale. Medi-Cal, Medicare and private insurance are accepted.

This agency is located in West Los Angeles (not in SPA 4) however there are wonderful online resources that anyone can access. There are books for children, ongoing

workshops for a low price, school based grief support, and there is also information on a summer camp for kids.

APLA does not offer one-on-one bereavement counseling however they do offer bereavement support groups. They run for 6 weeks. The next group just finished and they are not sure when the next one is going to begin. They welcome inquiry calls regarding this matter.

Mental Health Services at AIDS Project Los Angeles offer a broad range of services, including short-term individual, couples and family counseling, addictive behaviors counseling, on-call clinician hours, support groups (both closed and drop-in), long-term therapy with volunteer licensed therapists and referrals to HIV/AIDS-sensitive mental health providers. All services are available in English and Spanish and provided in a culturally competent manner.

Services: The center provides life problems counseling for people of all ages in Los Angeles County. Services include general counseling, premarital counseling,

The agency uses an interdisciplinary approach to social, emotional, and spiritual health by combining the perspectives of psychotherapists, ministers and physicians in a comprehensive range of counseling services. Short and long term psychotherapy is

also available for people who have a need for more intensive ongoing assistance. Psychiatric consultation is available to monitor medication for center clients, when necessary. There are no geographic restrictions.

Fees/payment source: Fees are set on a sliding scale based on income and range from $35 to $90 per session; lower fees available for low income Whittier residents or

Kaiser Permanente Bereavement Services offers bereavement support groups to Kaiser members and to the community. The group setting offers support to those who have lost a loved one. Participation is based on enrollment through Kaiser Bereavement Services. Groups are offered both mornings and evenings in the Downey area, mornings in the Baldwin Park area and afternoons in South Bay area. A Spanish speaking group is offered Monday mornings in Baldwin Park.

NOTE: These sessions are not well suited for individuals trying to cope with a traumatic death, such as, but not limited to: murder, suicide, still birth, miscarriage or infant death. Contact: Bereavement Services 562-622-4300
