PASTOR CORNER
Holy Catholic Families come in all sizes and config-urations.
Pope Francis has said several times that there are three things which members of a holy family have to learn to say to each other, and really mean:
• I’m sorry.
• I forgive you.
• Please and thank you!
Pope St. John Paul II taught that the family is where children learn forgiveness—to ask for it and to grant it.
Do you see the common thread in this teaching? The holy Catholic family, as a domestic Church, is the locus of mercy and forgiveness. Just as hatred and prejudice are learned, so is mercy and forgiveness. One of my late aunts would listen to her children complain about someone. Once they had vented, she’d insist that they say three good things about that same person. Although it was not what they wanted to hear, they did learn that they could find those three good things to say even about someone with whom they were furious.
There is no such thing as “pure evil”—the day on which evil seems to have been most successful, the day Christ was crucified, is called Good Friday! There is way too much “demonization” of others go-ing on in our world—not only in civil society but within the Church. One of our late confreres, long-time pastor of St. Peter Church in San Pedro, was quite vocal at Chapter meetings when he disagreed with someone. He would debate the point thorough-ly. Notwithstanding this firmness of conviction, he was always friendly and most hospitable with those same confreres outside of the meeting time. We were brothers with differing opinions, not enemies! Love and forgiveness are opposite sides of the same coin. Love is a decision to do the good for the other person habitually, whether reciprocated or not. For-giveness is also a decision. A decision to “untie” the other from their bad behavior towards us. It does not deny the wrong or the hurt, much less simply
dis-miss it, but it does pass it forward to the Lord. Give
it forth is one way of looking at forgive.
Forgiveness is a funny thing. It warms the heart & cools the sting.
Please pray for the recently deceased. May
they and all the faithful departed, through the
mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Pray for our ill Parishioners…

DID YOU KNOW?
Always keep your blind spots in mind
Each week, more than 50 children are killed or in-jured when a driver backs up the car. In an over-whelming number of those cases, a parent, relative, or close friend is behind the wheel. It’s devastating to think that a simple action could cause such harm to your child, but it happens far too frequently. Be aware of your ‘blind spots’ when you’re behind the wheel — those areas you know are there, but can’t see clearly from your mirrors. Check out what’s hap-pening around your vehicle before you get in. Make sure you know where your children are be-fore you start your car. Dear Tea Hostesses,
I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your energy, imagination, and com-passion in doing such a great job as table host-ess. I would also like to thank you on behalf of the Women of Grace and St. Serra Parish for your generosity and that of your friends.
I pray that you are all blessed with a beautiful Christmas and a most Happy New Year. I look forward to seeing you next year.

Tax-Wise Year End Giving Options
Gifts from an IRA
If you are 70 ½ or older, you can make a tax-free gift directly from your IRA account to the parish. This law allows you to transfer any amount up to $100,000 annually directly to a quali-fied charitable organization without paying income tax on the distribution. The transfer does not generate taxable income or a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemized your tax deductions. Your gift can satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution.
Gifts of Stock
Gifts of appreciated assets such as stock are an excellent way for you to make a charitable gift.
Stocks may be transferred directly to the Archdiocese for the benefit of parish, school or favorite Catholic ministry. These gifts will not affect your cash flow, and they provide the follow-ing tax benefits:
• A possible charitable deduction to help you save on taxes
• Bypass of federal and state capital gains taxes
• Avoidance of the tax on net investment income
From a tax perspective, a gift of appreciated assets makes good sense. You can make the capital gains taxes optional, achieve significant tax savings and support our pro-grams.Please contact Brooke Glazer at 213-637-7381 or bglazer@la-archdiocese.org.

Él discutiría el punto a fonacuer-do.
