4ELEMENTS

FOR A GREEN PLANET!

E R A S M U S + P R O G R A M M E

4Elements Erasmus + Project started on the first September 2017 and is about to finish. It gathered 4 schools around the theme of Environment and through the last two years many activities were completed in order to raise awareness in all participants (students and teachers) as well as parents and the school community.

Over this past year the 4 schools worked two specific Natural Elements: Fire and Air. Ciro Scianna School from Bagheria – Italy and Sint Lucas School from Eindhoven – the Netherlands created two sets of lessons based upon the concept of the Flipped Classroom learning. All students had the chance to learn in a different way and to develop creative results which were shared on the Twinspace of the Project. Other activities were also completed in order to celebrate some important dates such as Earth Day and Environment Day.

In February and in March occured two LTTA in Bagheria and Eindhoven and all participants enthusiastically learned and shared results. They had the chance to discover a volcano, Etna, and to understand the mechanism of a windmill.

The week dedicated to the element of Fire started on

February 25th and ended on March 1st, at Ciro Scianna School, at Bagheria, with a delegation of foreign teachers and students from Holland, Portugal and the Czech Republic.

On Monday the activities started with a tour of the school and a show about Colapesce, a well-known character of a Sicilian tale, performed by the Italian students. Later the students of each country presented their Fire presentations. During this day, the students also worked in the Science lab with the Maths teachers.

Tuesday was dedicated to activities which were held in Palermo at the Gemmellaro Museum in the morning. The afternoon was dedicated to a tour around Palermo where the participants visited the most important buildings of the Arab-Norman itinerary.

On Wednesday morning, the students were involved in an event which was organized at the University of Palermo,“Esperienza inSegna”. In the afternoon the Cultural Association of Volcanoes and Environment in Palermo organized a workshop about volcanic risks and geothermal energy at Ciro Scianna School.

On Thursday, the project participants were involved in class observation and played a Kahoot game to check the acquisition of their competences about the element Fire. In the afternoon, a bus took the students to the Fire Department in Palermo.

On Friday, the group participated in a tour to Etna. At Etna summit the European team had the opportunity to follow the explanation of two qualified guides, who illustrated, the volcanic activity.

After lunch, the students visited the largest museum in Italy dedicated to Etna Volcano.

Learning Teaching Training Activity

at the Netherlands_Dutch Team

From the 6th of May until the 10th of May the final mobility of the Erasmus+ project “4Elements” took place in The Netherlands, at SintLucas Eindhoven. The participating students and teachers were welcomed at SintLucas Eindhoven by English teacher Inge Berkers and by the headmaster Jaan Vorst. Inge gave a presentation about the school and about Eindhoven. After that everyone participated in a Kahoot to test everyone’s knowledge about the Netherlands. After the short break the group was split in two. The participants were given a guided tour around school by the Dutch students.

In the afternoon all groups presented their school and the theme wind linked to their own country.

Tuesday was excursion day! We took a bus trip to an old wind mill, in which we were given a tour by the owner of the mill. The mill was actually working at that time. After the visit to the wind mill a visit to DeltaPark Neeltje Jans followed. We took a boat ride over the Oosterschelde where we got to see modern wind mills and we saw the storm surge barrier at the Dutch coast. In the DeltaPark we learned more about sea life and we got to see animals like seals and sharks. After that it was time to return to Eindhoven. In the bus the everyone was handed out a worksheet to answer questions about their experience and about what they had learned during the excursion day.

During the third day of the exchange, the students started working on the design of their 4Elements app in duos of different nationalities. A number of students excelled with their drawing skills. The students were then given a workshop by our biology teacher Freek Lamberts. The students made their own kite and they were allowed to decorate it themselves. It was raining, which means that trying the kites would have to wait for another day. In the evening it was time for relaxation. The students had a delicious dinner by using the typically Dutch grilling stone. Then everyone went bowling.

On the fourth day of the exchange, the students worked out their design of their app in the MarvelApp program. The results are impressive. Then it was time to put on sportswear. The students were given a mix of different sports activities and then went into town for the WhatsApp tour. The groups received a number of assignments via WhatsApp to get to know the center of Eindhoven a little better.

During the last day of the exchange, the students were given workshops in making a PopArt and a Vincent van Gogh painting from their own photo. Then they made their own e-Magazine with reports of the week and with their opinion about the exchange. In the afternoon it was time for the closing ceremony while enjoying a drink and a snack.

Students opinions

I really enjoyed going to Italy: meeting new people, learning about different cultures and costumes. My favourite part has to be either the Etna or our last dinner together. I also liked the tour around Palermo and the nights out in Bagheria.

I really liked Palermo. The monuments especially the Fontana della Vergogna and the Quattro Cantis de Palermo. It is really beautiful. I was surprised with the amount of potato that the Italians use. I had never eaten pizza with potato before, and it was surprisingly good.

Daniela, Santarém, Portugal

My English improved a lot thanks to my stay with hosting family, I learnt a lot about the country, their habits, I visited interesting places, I met new people. I would recomend participating in an international project because it´s something very different to what you experience in your everyday life.       Veronika, Trutnov, Czech Republic

I learnt more about Holland, my English improved a great deal, I met new people, visited interesting places. It was all an added value to working on an international project. It was a fun week. I would recomend working on an international project to everybody. Don´t be scared, go for it!

Students Opinions

The mobility to Eindhoven (in Holland) was so much fun! My favourite things which we learned there were how to make our own app, and how to make a pop art in Photoshop, it was really a great opportunity. Another favourite thing was the city, it's more modern, clean and active than some cities in Portugal.

Summing up, I liked everything there! I really liked the experience, it's something I'll never forget.

Sara, Santarém, Portugal

Before I participated in this project I had heard many times that people who want to learn English well need to travel to a foreign country. Now, I

understand why. Abroad you use the language 100% every day. It ´s very different to sitting  at school. One really needs to live it…

Barbora, Trutnov, Czech Republic

My experience of hosting a girl from the Czech Republic was fantastic. From 6th to 10th May, the last Erasmus KA2 mobility took place in Eindhoven in the SintLucas school, Netherlands.  Every day we did different fun and cultural activities, like building a kite, painting with the Van Gogh method or the school tour. It was a beautiful experience, I hope I can do it again.

Students Opinions

I loved our adventure to Italy. It was exciting! I liked our excursion to the volcano and to Palermo. Of course we had problems but I like how kids from different countries tried to communicate with others even though their English wasn't that good.

Dennis, Eindhoven, Netherlands I had the opportunity of going to Holland, it was a travel I will never forget because I learned so much about the country and I also had a great time.

Sofia, Santarém, Portugal

In Italy it was very fun and the volcano was fun. In the

Netherlands it was also very fun and it was fun that we went to Neeltje Jans. So it was super fun! Luca, Eindhoven, Netherlands

I didn't want to believe it but it was fun to speak English all week, I learnt new words, I tried to speak Italian a little bit, too. I enjoyed the group work and interacting with other students during project activities. It was great to taste new

food.

Final Note

P R O J E C T C O O R D I N A T O R

4Elements Erasmus + Project will officially finish next October. The results are fantastic!

We are certain some specific outcomes will change mentalities and the participants lifestyles

concerning both aspects: the teaching/learning process and environmental issues.

Not only the direct participants opinions are quite satisfying but also all resulting products or

activities that were developed: a case study upon the relevance of Flipped Classroom teaching

and all videos/posters/campaigns completed during the Project lifetime.

Apart from these expected results also friendship ties were created and the cultural exchange that

happened made this a very special Project. Students had the chance to experiment new learning

methods, to raise their environmental awareness and to broaden their personal, cultural and social

knowledge of other nationalities.

We are sure this project will make a difference in all participants lives!
