Text Modules for the German Design Award – General Information

The German Design Council’s Premier Prize

The German Design Award is the international premium prize from the German Design Council. Prizes are awarded to high-quality products and projects from product and communications design, design personalities and newcomers for their pioneering contributions to the German and international design landscape.

The goal of the German Design Award is to discover, present and award prizes for exceptional design trends.

20 categories represent a broad design spectrum

In order to adequately depict the richness of our product and communications culture, the German Design Award has been divided into the segments Excellent Product Design and Excellent

Communications Design, which each encompass 10 respective categories. These cover all areas of daily life, such as Home Interior and Working Spaces, or Transportation and Digital Media. A specialist sub-jury distinguishes up to ten nominees as Winner and one Gold winner in each of the 20 competition categories.

Nomination

Those who are nominated for the German Design Award possess outstanding design expertise. Only a nomination provides participants with the opportunity to compete with the most talented members of the design scene. Therefore, even the mere participation in the German Design Award is an honour in itself for both companies and designers. Renowned design experts from the German Design Council are responsible for the nomination process – they have a keen sense for great potential.

Special Mention

Due to the high quality among the number of participants, the German Design Council will award the distinction Special Mention. This award honours achievements whose design exhibited particularly noteworthy aspects or solutions – a distinction that acknowledges the commitment of both companies and designers.

German Design Council

The German Design Council is the authority for brand and design in Germany. Commissioned by the highest authority to represent new developments in the German design industry. Established on the initiative of the German Bundestag (the lower house of German parliament) as a foundation in 1953, it supports the industry in all matters consistently aimed at generating an added brand value through

design. Therefore, the German Design Council has become one of the world’s leading competence centres for communication and brand management in the field of design.

Through exhibitions, conferences, competitions and publications, the German Design Council reinforces the meaning and appreciation for design. Not least among those who commission design services – the exclusive network of foundation members includes in addition to designers, design associations and institutions, particularly owners and executives of numerous renowned companies. The German Design Council is essentially for those who view design as far more than merely pretty wrapping, but rather as a decisive factor for economic and cultural success as well as an indispensible unique selling position.

German Design Award 2015

The German Design Award applies the highest standards for the determination of its prize winners. 1. In the course of the nomination process, committees of experts from the German Design Council

will only invite those products and communications services to participate in the contest, which have clearly demonstrated the ability to set themselves apart from the competition through their creative quality.

2. The jury (30 renowned experts; see below) is divided into individual expert juries, which in turn determine the Gold winner and Winner from all the participants.

3. The number of Gold winners and Winner is strictly limited: A maximum of 10 Winner and one

Gold winner will be awarded in each category.

The German Design Award has expanded considerably since its premiere in 2012. At that time approximately 1,500 submissions were presented to the jury, whereas this year there were 2,250. Jury

The jury of the German Design Award 2015 consists of design experts from different fields. These stem from business, education and science as well as the design industry and are recognised authorities in their specific fields of expertise.

Evaluation criteria for Excellent Product Design

The products and achievements should stand out dueto particularly outstanding features demonstrated with regard to the following aspects:

Ergonomics, functionality and operability, practical value, overall concept, design quality, degree of innovativeness, durability, brand value and branding, market maturity, ecological compatibility, ecological quality, product aesthetics, product graphics and semantics, safety and accessibility, symbolic and emotional content, technical quality, technical function, manufacturing techniques and quality.

The preceding list does not constitute an order of importance for the jury’s evaluation criteria.

Excellent Product Design categories

The jury will select one Gold winner and awards 10 Winner distinctions in each of the 10 product design categories. In addition, Special Mention distinctions will be bestowed for exceptional design quality.
