Message from the Dean

It gives me great pleasure to present the Prairie View A&M University College of Business Two-Year Report. The report provides an overview of our activities, updates on our programs and the impressive accomplishments of our faculty, staff, and students.

In 2006, we earned the prestigious accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International). Since that time, we have been asking, “What’s next? How do we continue to build momentum and strengthen our position as a business school of choice? ”

We have strengthened our admissions requirements to attract students who were interested in a rigorous and exciting business school education. This has resulted in our ability to continue to grow and attract students, each group better prepared than the previous group. At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, our enrollment continues to increase, generally outpacing growth in other colleges. In fall 2007 and fall 2008, we exceeded our enrollment projections.

We introduced a new program for students pursuing a less traditional approach to college. For students who were interested in earning a bachelor’s degree, but who need the flexibility of weekend classes and wanted something closer to home, we took our programs to Lone Star College-CyFair.

For working professionals, we began offering all of our MBA classes online in the fall 2009 to meet the demands of a hectic schedule and lifestyle. Now, from the privacy of their homes or workplace, at times convenient for them to study, MBA students will be able to complete the entire PVAMU MBA online. Students will still have access to the same resources – highly qualified faculty with a PhD in their teaching areas, and a curriculum certified by the most respected B-School accreditation body in the world.

Today’s turbulent economy underscores the fact that capitalism isn’t perfect, but business schools are uniquely positioned to address chronic societal problems of unethical business leadership, economic disparity and unemployment by studying alternate models. We are branching out in several areas of entrepreneurship: we’ve added a three-course certification program for non-business majors and a minor in entrepreneurship for business majors. Ultimately, we expect to establish a Center for Entrepreneurship on our campus and look forward to graduating a new generation of ethical and socially responsible business leaders.

We continue to be engaged with the larger community – in partnership with the IRS, the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) continues to support the elderly and underserved, and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) continues to play a vital part in the attracting new business to the community. The Center for International Business Education is playing an important role in raising awareness and training students, school teachers and local businesses on global business opportunities.

We are also pleased to have contributed to the University’s successful $30 million “Extend the View” Capital Campaign, the first of its kind in the university’s 133-year history. In our pursuit of excellence, we will continue to attract financial support from some of the best alumni and companies in the world.

I hope you enjoy this publication. Please give me a call, send an e-mail, or better yet, come and visit me if you want to get involved with the College of Business and help us in the great and noble business of producing future business leaders. Munir Quddus

Gallery Furniture’s “Mattress Mack” Headlines Small Business

Development Center Workshop

Founder and CEO of Gallery Furniture Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale was the featured guest speaker at the “How to Start Your Own Business” seminar sponsored by the Prairie View A&M University Small Business Development Center September 26, 2007, in the Hobart Taylor Recital Hall. The primer for budding entrepreneurs, covers topics such as securing start-up capital from banks, tips for success and the importance of having a solid business plan.

Mack told his story of moving to Houston in the early 1980s with just $5,000 to open a furniture store in the rapidly expanding Houston area. Gallery Furniture is now the country’s top revenue producing single-site retail operation with sales of $150 million per year. Mack credits his success in business to a strong work ethic instilled in him by his parents, his unwavering commitment to exceptional customer service and the opportunities afforded to small businesses in the United States.

Participants also heard from Cynthia Powers, president of Prosperity Bank in Hempstead who specifically addressed members of the audience who planned to seek funding from a financial institution to start or expand their businesses, and Sonia Maldonado, business specialist with the U.S. Small Business Administration who explained how the SBA serves both banks and individuals. The SBDC sponsors a number of seminars and workshops to help small business owners in the area.

MBA Students Awarded Sixth Place at National OFC Venture

HBCU Business Plan Competition

Prairie View A&M University students finished in sixth place at the Opportunity Funding Corporation (OFC) Venture Challenge Business Plan Competition held in Atlanta, GA April 17-20, 2008. Desola Awofeso, Tammie Hill, Sawanda Moses, Tareq Saklou, William Stinson and Jeannetta Woodard presented their business plan for Panther Kids University Child Care Center, or PKU, Inc. to a panel of corporate judges and venture capitalists. Twenty-five colleges and universities competed for the best business plan award (top prize: $10,000) in front of more than 400 people.

This was the first time in four years of competing that PVAMU made it to the final round. Team member Tammie Hill remarked, “It was an incredible experience to be able to work so closely with our professors and deans. We saw them in a light that you don’t usually see in the classrooms. I enjoyed the opportunity to meet so many people from other HBCUs, companies, and even Atlanta.”

PVAMU NABA Students Win National Student Chapter of the Year

When the PVAMU Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) attended the Southwest Regional Student Conference in Dallas in fall 2008, they returned with bragging rights as the Student Chapter of the Year. The PVAMU NABA Chapter received the most points for Student Chapter Reporting and Evaluation Program (SCREP) reporting. Chapters earn points for planning activities; member recruitment and development; seminars; community development projects; Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) participation; preparation of the chapter’s financial statements and tax returns; and attendance at the regional student conference. PVAMU accounting students Garland Thompson and Abimbola Ogunleye attended the NABA professional conference this summer in Atlanta to receive the award. The primary advisor for NABA is assistant professor Bettye Desselle with support from professor Brian Lee and assistant professor Fred Feucht.

Nascent Entrepreneurs Make Their Pitch

Six teams of Prairie View A&M University students spent ten minutes per team pitching their business ideas to a panel of judges while cruising around the campus in a Hummer limousine. LaTravia Davis, Joshua Dent, Celestial Hall, Kim Reed, Melissa Reeves, Carrittee Smith, Allyson Washington, Elyssa Washington and James Williams presented their plans while the stretch limo circled around the campus after leaving from the Willie A. Tempton, Sr. Memorial Student Center on April 29, 2008. Teams presented an original business idea to a panel of three judges: Elizabeth Zelenka, vice president and branch manager of Amegy Bank; Rhonda Cummings, CEO and managing partner of Emerging Business Academy; and entrepreneur Vince Yokom with the Waller County Economic Development Partnership. Presentations were evaluated based on originality, functionality, applicability and sustainability.

The Limousine Pitch Idea Competition kicked off the COB’s new Certification in Entrepreneurship Program for non-business majors and promoted a spirit of

entrepreneurship on campus. Dr. Sammie Robinson, assistant professor of management, says that PVAMU students know how to hustle to get things done and start their own business, “Some just need more guidance, and we are here to provide that guidance.” After careful deliberation, guest judges selected the “Panther Real Talk” idea proposed by LaTravia Davis, Carrittee Smith and Kimberly Reed for first place. Each team member received a $500 bookstore voucher and a donated prize. Second place was awarded to the “United Universities” plan presented by James Williams who received a $250 bookstore voucher and a donated prize. Third place went to Celestial Hall, Elyssa Washington and Allyson Washington for the “Claratoli Fashion Design Center” concept. The team received a $125 book voucher and prize. All participants were recognized at a reception immediately following the program.

College of Business Inducts Record Number of Students into

Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society

Fifty-seven COB juniors, seniors and graduate students were inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society during a special ceremony held the evening of November 13, 2008. Associate professors Dr. Reginald L. Bell and Dr. Peter Wibawa Sutanto were also inducted into the society. Dr. Munir Quddus, dean of the College of Business, presided over the well-attended ceremony.

Beta Gamma Sigma is the honor society serving business programs accredited by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business This membership is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive in a program accredited by AACSB. This was the second induction of BGS students from the PVAMU chapter. Twenty four undergraduates, five graduates and four faculty members including PVAMU President George C. Wright and Provost E. Joahanne Thomas-Smith, as well as Dr. Emmanuel Opara and Dr. Rahim Quazi, were inducted during the first induction ceremony held in 2007.

Sixty-four eligible students were invited to join this year and 57 applied and become life members. The high response rate of eligible students - members must be in the top 10% of their junior and/or senior class or in the top 20% of their graduate class at the time of the application – earned the PVAMU Chapter the distinction of “Exemplary Chapter.” This honorary designation denotes an acceptance rate of 85 percent or higher in one degree level. Exemplary Chapters will receive a certificate and qualify for $500 in matching funds in the Society’s Scholarship Program.

Social Security Administration Gifts Computers to College

Mr. Henry Rose, computer specialist for the College of Business and Frank Shields, MBA student, secured a donation of computers, monitors and other equipment for the College of Business from the Social Security Administration. Dean Wilson, assistant district manager for the Social Security Administration in Houston was instrumental in helping the college secure this gift. The donated items - 57 Dell 270 computers and 58 Samsung monitors - will be used to upgrade some of the computers in the computer “homework labs”. Mr. Rose said, “Although the equipment is pre-owned, it is newer than some of the machines currently installed in some of our classrooms and labs. We are grateful to have received this donation.”

Students who want more in-depth study in the areas of finance or management information systems now have that option at PVAMU. The College of Business began offering concentrations in finance and MIS for MBA students in fall 2007. Interested students must take four additional courses to complete the requirements for the MIS concentration or three additional courses for a concentration in finance.

Joint Admissions Program with Lone Star College-CyFair

Announced

In fall 2008, Prairie View A&M University College of Business began offering upper division courses leading to bachelor of business administration degrees in Finance, Management Information Systems and Management on the LSC-CyFair campus on weekends. The Joint Admissions (JA) Program between the two institutions is designed to ensure a seamless transition for LSC-CyFair students to PVAMU while maximizing the number of course transfer hours from the Lone Star College to PVAMU (up to 72 semester credit hours). While the JA Program is optimized for LSC-CyFair students, all students seeking a bachelor’s degree in one of the business degrees offered are eligible to enroll.

PVAMU One of 39 Nationwide HP Technology Grant Recipients

PVAMU was selected as one of 39 two- and four-year colleges and universities to receive a 2008 HP Technology for Teaching grant, designed to transform teaching and improve learning in the classroom through innovative uses of technology. The award package of HP products and a faculty cash award was valued at more than $77,000.

The PVAMU College of Business will use the technology to integrate multiple teaching and learning tools in MIS/IT classes that are not available in traditional classrooms. The HP Tablet PCs’ unique on-screen linking capabilities will be incorporated into note-taking, classroom discussions, case analyses and group study. By using this integrated, mobile technology, students will learn to design, format and modify group projects more effectively. Business faculty members Dr. Wenshin Chen, Dr. Venugopal Balijepally and Dr. Peter Sutanto applied for the HP grant and will be integrating the technology and tools. “Around the world, HP partners with pioneering professors and schools to discover how technology can improve student success,” said Sid Espinosa, director of Global Social Investment Programs at HP. “While technology is not the answer to every educational challenge, we have witnessed its incredible and transformative impact in the classroom. This innovation is happening every day as teaching and learning are fundamentally changing.”

“This grant represents an opportunity for advancement in a world that becomes more competitive by the day,” said Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX). “I am excited for the students at Prairie View and I salute HP for its commitment to education. This is a perfect example of how the private sector can enhance the quality of education at an outstanding public institution.”

PVAMU Graduate Programs in Business Launches MBA Program

The addition of online courses is ideal for students who need flexibility with their schedules or who prefer to take some classes online and others in a traditional classroom environment.

College of Business Revises Vision and Mission Statements,

Reinforces Commitment to Excellence

With input from groups of faculty, students, alumni and other stakeholders, the College of Business revised its vision and mission statements in spring 2009. The new statements read as follows:

Vision Statement:

Our vision is to empower students from diverse backgrounds to become productive and ethical business professionals who are among the best in the world.

Mission Statement:

We provide a diverse student body with an education that creates highly productive professionals who are ethical, entrepreneurial, and prepared to succeed in the global economy. The College achieves this through excellence in teaching, research and service, and engagement with the business community and other stakeholders. The student experience is distinguished by personal attention, teamwork, leadership training, and appreciation of the social responsibility of business.

Entrepreneurship Added to Curriculum

Entrepreneurship and small business development are key drivers in our economy. Wealth and a high number of jobs are created by small businesses started by entrepreneurially-minded individuals. In addition to the PVAMU Small Business Development Center, the college plans to expand curriculum offerings and programs to foster and support a culture of entrepreneurship on the campus and in the surrounding community.

The College of Business has created a three-course Certification in Entrepreneurship Program for non-business majors and introduced a minor in entrepreneurship for business and non-business majors. Ultimately, the college plans to educate students in principles

Accenture Leadership Conference

Nearly 400 students participated in the inaugural Accenture Student Leadership and Development Conference held on the main campus on April 16, 2009. The half-day conference was designed to help participants develop the necessary tools and knowledge to become the next generation of leaders as well as enhance their career development. Following the opening session, undergraduate students attended workshops. Workshop topics included The Rules: How to Master the Game; Building an Effective Network; Effective Communications; and Authentic Leadership Styles: Teachable Point of View. The Conference was the brain child of several PVAMU alumni and championed by then Accenture Partner, Terrence Gee. Accenture has nearly 50 Prairie View A&M alumni employees, all of whom support the Accenture PVAMU Campus Team and have made a commitment to support this conference and create an endowment as a way to give back to their alma mater.

“As alumni, we strongly believe that the education and experiences we gained as students here provided us with the foundation to succeed at Accenture— and we vow to help current students who aspire to join the professional world,” says David Townsend, Accenture senior manager and campus team co-lead.

Mr. Stephen “Steve” Rohleder, Accenture’s chief operating officer, made the keynote presentation during the closing session. During his address, Mr. Rohleder outlined the two qualities of a good leader, the three traits that distinguish great leaders and the six behaviors that leaders need to exhibit during tough times. Students then had an opportunity to ask Mr. Rohleder a range of questions including his advice about building a strong work ethic and setting priorities.

The program concluded with the awarding of two $1,300 scholarships. Junior accounting major Camillka Redwood and junior chemical engineering major Oruare Ovbiagele were the first recipients of the Accenture Leadership and Development Conference Scholarships.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program Continues to Grow

The IRS sponsors the “Volunteer Income Tax Assistance” (VITA) program nationwide. The program’s goal is to provide free tax assistance to low income, rural, and other underserved groups. VITA site volunteers prepare and file tax returns and give tax advice, without charge. Each year, all volunteers complete courses established by the IRS, so they are as qualified as first season employees at commercial tax-preparation sites. The VITA site at PVAMU’s COB started modestly in 2003 with six student volunteers and prepared about the same number of returns. The program has grown each year, with each year’s return production exceeding the preceding year by

40% to 100%. Most COB VITA student volunteers are accounting majors, but volunteers from anywhere in the university or community are welcome. In addition to providing a valuable service, student volunteers gain significant experience interacting, as

professionals, with clients. The volunteers are assisted by COB accounting and tax faculty members.

During the 2008 tax season, volunteers at the COB VITA site prepared more than 220 returns, reporting over $3 million in income and returning over $280,000 to its client taxpayers.

In addition to holding bi-weekly preparation sessions at the College, COB VITA held two Saturday sessions at the First Methodist Church in Waller and five Saturday sessions at the Korean-American Association offices in northwest Houston. That location, staffed by PVAMU faculty, staff, and their spouses, prepared over 70 returns, providing the bulk of the increase in returns for the year.

Scholarships provide financial relief that can mean the difference between earning a degree and deferring a dream. Scholarship endowments support student success and opportunity by providing a reliable and permanent fund for scholarship support. Alumni, companies, friends or university personnel may create a named scholarship endowment with a minimum investment of $5,000. In 2008, Henri L. Bailey, III and his wife Carolyn became generous donors to the Prairie View A&M University College of Business. Because their friends and colleagues cared so deeply for them and about the students at PVAMU, they donated to the endowment through a benefit dinner in Dr. Bailey’s honor.

Dr. Henri L. Bailey, III, associate professor of management in the College of Business retired in May 2008, after nearly 20 years of service at Prairie View A&M University. A dinner celebrating the academic career and contributions of Dr. Henri L. Bailey, III was held the evening of Friday, April 25, 2008, at the Wyndham Greenspoint Hotel in Houston. More than 300 friends, family and colleagues attended and paid tribute to Dr. Bailey through musical selections and remarks throughout the evening.

Prior to joining Prairie View A&M University, Dr. Bailey served in the United States Air Force (he joined in 1962) which took him to over 60 countries and lasted for 20 years when he retired in July 1982 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Dr. Bailey is a graduate of Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois, he earned a master of business administration from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and a doctor of philosophy in business administration from Saint Louis University in Missouri. He began his teaching career in higher education at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. He has also taught at the Graduate Education Center of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Alexandria, Virginia; Howard University in Washington, D.C.; Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem North Carolina; and Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas.

Dr. Bailey began his journey at PVAMU as department head of the department of management and marketing in the College of Business. Since joining the university in 1989, he has served as assistant to the vice president for finance and administration, assistant vice president for information technology services, university chief information officer and associate provost and associate vice president for academic affairs. He returned to the classroom as an associate professor in the College of Business full-time in August 2004.

Dr. Bailey has been married to Carolyn Elizabeth Ladd of Pensacola since August 1969 and the couple has two sons: Henri Louis Bailey, IV and Shawn Howard Bailey who both reside in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Corporate Partner of the Year

Prairie View A&M University’s College of Business believes we must build better bridges among the educational institutions that prepare tomorrow’s leaders, the workforce and the organizations that are committed to strengthening their communities and supporting business education. Our partners play a vital role in fulfilling our mission and building services essential to the success of our students. Each year, the college recognizes one partner that has been exceptional in their commitment to the college’s mission during the annual COB Awards and Recognition Ceremony held in April.

2007-2008

The team from Shell Oil renewed their commitment to Prairie View A&M University by sponsoring an array of events that allowed College of Business students to earn 1st place in a national competition (NABA student chapter of the year); be recognized for their scholarship (Beta Gamma Sigma “Exemplary Chapter”); and future business students to spend two weeks on campus during a K-12 summer program (BASIS). In fall 2009, students will also benefit from the Shell Textbook Loan Program thanks to funding to support the purchase of textbooks for student use through the Center for Business Communication. 2008 Interns LeCresha Durham Kasey Knight Keiva Tyson Jazmin Williams 2008 Graduation Hire LeCresha Durham 2009 Interns Gregory Brown Malcolm Copeland Ridge Fields-Cooper Bosha Jaggers Phillip Robbins Jazmin Williams

2008-2009

The College of Business has enjoyed an excellent relationship with Accenture for a number of years. During the 2008-2009 academic year, Accenture team members made a concerted effort to help students navigate the interview process, served as mentors to students and remains one of the colleges’ largest employers of graduating students during a calendar year.

In April 2009, nearly 400 students participated in the inaugural Accenture Student Leadership and Development Conference held on the campus of Prairie View A&M University. While the information presented was informative and the students learned a great deal of information that would help them boost their professional development, what was most impressive to many faculty, the administration as well as students was that this conference was conceived, coordinated and funded primarily by PVAMU alumni who work at Accenture.

This group of 50 alumni and friends, led by retired Accenture partner, Rice alumnus and COB Board Member Terrance Gee, made a commitment to continue this conference for the benefit of our students at PVAMU annually and fund an endowment to support the conference and academic scholarships. The COB was pleased to acknowledge their long-term commitment and support by recognizing them as our 2008-2009 Corporate Partner of the Year.

Black Executive Exchange Program

The BEEP program is a “voluntary partnership between the National Urban League (NUL), corporate America, government, non-profits, and other institutions to loan African-American executives to participating colleges as Visiting Professors.” Visiting Professors lecture in credit-bearing courses that correspond to their industries and participate in other activities such as networking sessions, workshops and mock job interviews.

BEEP Visiting Professors travel to colleges and universities at their own expense to share their knowledge with students, faculty and administrators to better prepare them for challenges beyond the classroom. BEEPers conducted mock interviews and taught more than 10 classes during their visit to discuss developing a personal brand as part of a long-term career strategy.

Andre Howell from The Hartford in Connecticut and William Dawson with the National Urban League’s Black Executive Exchange Program office in New York, visited the PVAMU campus in fall 2007. BEEP guests who visited the College of spring 2009 included Michael D. Brown, author and retail operations manager and business process manager with Shell Oil; Patrick Simon, founder and CEO of Beehive Technology Solutions, LLC and Lakeisha Walker, scientific associate (Neutron Scattering Science Division) with Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Faculty Presentations

for Research Seminars

The COB Teaching and Research Seminar program sponsored two presentations on October 17, 2008, in the Dean’s Conference Room. Professor Brian Lee delivered a presentation on “The Effect of Reforms in the Korean Financial Reporting Systems,” sampling periods before and after that country’s financial crisis in 1997. His report was titled, “Reforms in the Korean Financial Reporting Systems and Earnings Quality.” According to Lee, “the results indicate that the reforms in the financial sector have reduced the earnings capacity of Korean firms.” However, his studies argue that “such an improvement is not large enough to make the earnings quality of Korean firms comparable to that of their United States counterparts.” On the same day, Dr. Yi Zhang presented her study titled, “Heterogeneous Beliefs and Cross-Sectional Stock Returns.” Her paper shows that “most proxy variables capture both uncertainty and belief differences, which helps explain the conflicting empirical results obtained in earlier studies [of future stock returns].”
