Dear Family,
We come into this weekend following a week of events that have called us to reflect on the dignity of all human life. We started the week on January 18th celebrating the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who was an incredible voice crying out for a respect for all people, regardless of their race. As a Baptist minister, he knew the message of Jesus very well. He saw in Jesus’ actions a respect for people of all backgrounds. Dr. King brought that message into the struggles of the mid 20th century. We are called today to continue the work that he so courageously called us to do! We also commemorate on January 22nd the very sad decision of the Supreme Court in 1973 that legalized abortion throughout our nation. This decision violates the respect and dignity of the most vulnerable among us, the pre-born children in their mothers’ womb. Let us pray and peacefully continue the work to promote the dignity of all human life, born and pre-born, regardless of race, class, etc. This respect for life extends from conception until natural death. We are all created in God’s image and likeness. Below, you will find Church teaching on the subject from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Art. 1931: Respect for the human person proceeds by way of respect for the principle that "everyone should look upon his neighbor (without any exception) as 'another self,' above all bearing in mind his life and the means necessary for living it with dignity." No legislation could by itself do away with the fears, prejudices, and attitudes of pride and selfishness which obstruct the establishment of truly fraternal societies. Such behavior will cease only through the charity that finds in every man a "neighbor," a brother.
Art.1934: Created in the image of the one God and equally endowed with rational souls, all men have the same nature and the same origin. Redeemed by the sacrifice of Christ, all are called to participate in the same divine beatitude: all therefore enjoy an equal dignity.
Art. 1935: The equality of men rests essentially on their dignity as persons and the rights that flow from it: Every form of social or cultural discrimination in fundamental personal rights on the grounds of sex, race, color, social conditions, language, or religion must be curbed and eradicated as incompatible with God's design.
Art. 1936: On coming into the world, man is not equipped with everything he needs for developing his bodily and spiritual life. He needs others. Differences appear tied to age, physical abilities, intellectual or moral aptitudes, the benefits derived from social commerce, and the distribution of wealth. The "talents" are not distributed equally.
Art. 1937: These differences belong to God's plan, who wills that each receive what he needs from others, and that those endowed with particular "talents" share the benefits with those who need them. These differences encourage and often oblige persons to practice generosity, kindness, and sharing of goods; they foster the mutual enrichment of cultures.
Praised Be Jesus Christ…Now and Forever!!!!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
We took a week off from remote learning to do some planning. Monday and Tuesday classes resume this week, I was overly optimistic that we would be able to return to in person classes in March. Unfortunately we will be unable to return to in person classes due to the restrictions of being in an orange zone. Parents in the Faith formation program have been sent a letter explaining how we will proceed from here. Those in sacrament preparation for grades 2 and 3 will be getting a letter as to meetings and gatherings via remote on Zoom or Google meetings and working with the Blessed Program from Dynamic Catholic Confirmation. 10th grade will be notified also.
Connecting to the gospel-Gospel Reading Mark 1:14-20 Jesus calls the fishermen, Simon and Andrew, James and John, to be his disciples.
Today’s Gospel describes how Jesus called his first disciples and the immediacy with which these men dropped everything to follow him. We can only begin to imagine what Jesus’ presence must have been like to invoke such a response in these first disciples. While a few of us might relate to such a radical conversion, many of us would find such a sudden change in ourselves or in another person unsettling. There are few things for which we would willingly drop everything. And yet this is the immediacy with which these first disciples responded to Jesus. These first disciples were willing to drop everything in order to make Jesus and the Kingdom of God the most important things in their lives.
Gather as a family and talk about circumstances in which you have had to “drop everything.” (the call to pick up a sick child from school, the cry of a hurt or angry child) How did you feel about having to change your plans in each of these situations? How do we feel when someone asks us to drop everything to help him or her? For many of us, it is not easy to drop everything to respond to the needs of another.
Read today’s Gospel, Mark 1:14–20. Invite your family to imagine what Jesus’ presence and invitation to these first followers must have been like that they responded by leaving their livelihood to become his disciples. How might our life change if we understood the Kingdom of God to be as important and immediate in our lives? Ask God to help you experience the Kingdom of God with such immediacy. Pray together the Lord’s Prayer.
Blessings,
Marie Sajsa, DRE

INSTALLED AS 15TH BISHOP OF BUFFALO DIOCESE
(Buffalo, NY)- Bishop Michael William Fisher has been installed as the 15th bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo in a ceremony rich in the Church’s ancient and sacred ritual but substantially scaled-down due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic threat. His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, presided over the installation that the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, Wilton Cardinal Gregory, Archbishop of Washington, D.C. and other specially-invited guests were unable to attend, given prevailing quarantine requirements for those traveling to New York from out of town locations. A contingent representing diocesan ministries and parishes, schools, Catholic institutions and and religious houses were on hand to greet Bishop Fisher during the liturgy.
During the Rite of Installation, Pope Francis’ Apostolic Letter of appointment was read by diocesan Chancellor, Sister Regina Murphy, SSMN. After the reading of the “papal bull” and it being presented to the diocesan College of Consultors, Bishop Fisher was escorted by Cardinal Timothy Dolan to the cathedra (bishop’s chair) where Bishop Fisher officially assumed leadership of the Diocese of Buffalo.
“It’s with the greatest humility that I accept this call to now serve you as your 15th bishop, and which I view as a continuation of the assent to Christian discipleship, first offered on my behalf at baptism some 62 years ago by my wonderful and devoted parents, Margo and Bill,” Bishop Fisher said in his homily. “Together with my adoring grandparents who were such a presence and positive influence in our lives, I bring their memory to this altar today in a very special way, with the unqualified admission that all which has brought me to this point and enabled me over these many years to hear the often subtle voice of God - and to say yes again and again to His promptings - was made possible by their tremendous love and remarkable example of Faith and faithfulness.”
Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger, Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese since December 2019 following the retirement of Bishop Richard J. Malone offered: “The good people of the Diocese, whom I have been blessed to serve over the past year, have been blessed with a devoted and devout pastor who is eager to continue the work of renewal and define a new era of vitality and increased impact of Catholic faith and ministry throughout Western New York. I give thanks to God and to the Holy Father, Pope Francis for the gift of his leadership and ministry that will most certainly bear much fruit in the years ahead.”
Bishop Fisher highlighted his priority to be an “instrument of healing” for those who have suffered abuse and have been disenfranchised from the sacramental life of the Church: “In this work of renewal that together must be our constant preoccupation, we must be ever mindful of those who have turned away - not because of any failing on their part - but because they have been deeply harmed by the sin and failing of those they trusted most. … To all who have suffered and continue to feel like they no longer belong or have a place within the family that once nurtured their faith and contributed to their identity, I pledge to Diocese of Buffalo Office of Communications For more information, please contact Gregory W. Tucker, Interim Director of Communications gtucker@buffalodiocese.org listen; to comfort however I can; to understand as best I am able; and to exert every effort within my capacity to be an instrument of your healing.”
Committing to defining a “new era of Catholic education” in the Diocese he now leads, Bishop Fisher emphasized the vital role educators and those and those who support and work in our schools and parish faith formation programs in shaping the lives and prospects of young people: “One of aspects that has so defined and distinguished your legacy here in the Diocese of Buffalo is the commitment to educating the young - instilling in their young minds and hearts a sense of purpose, conviction and personal responsibility that of course, is rooted in Christian discipleship. We have no more urgent priority than to continue this proud legacy of Catholic education, nurturing the potential of our youth; addressing their needs, guiding and supporting them as they sort out the often conflicting demands and influences of our present age.”
Bishop Fisher (62), a native of Baltimore and the oldest of five children born to Margo and William (“Bill”) Fisher (now deceased), was ordained to the priesthood by Cardinal James A. Hickey on June 23, 1990. He was assigned to Sacred Heart parish in La Plata, Maryland, and in 1995 as a pastor of Holy Family parish in Hillcrest Heights, MD. Four years later, he became pastor of St. John Neumann parish in Gaithersburg, MD.
In 2005, then-Father Fisher was named a Chaplain to His Holiness John Paul II (a distinction that entails the title of “monsignor”), and was appointed that same year as Vicar General for the Apostolates which entailed overseeing archdiocesan ministries for education, ethnic ministries, social justice and service, parish life and youth ministry. The following year, then-Monsignor Fisher was appointed Vicar for Clergy and Secretary for Ministerial Leadership, with responsibility for vocations, formation and care of the clergy for the archdiocese. Upon the appointment of Archbishop Wilton Gregory (now Cardinal Wilton Gregory) in 2019, Bishop Fisher maintained his responsibilities as Secretary for Ministerial Leadership.
Named an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Washington by Pope Francis on June 8, 2018, Bishop Fisher was ordained to the episcopate on June 29, 2018 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Throughout his thirty years of priestly ministry, Bishop Fisher has served on various boards and committees of the Archdiocese of Washington, including, the College of Consultors, Priest Council, Administrative Board, Priest Retirement Board, Clergy Personnel Board, Deacon Review Board, Deacon Council, Needy Parish Committee, as well as the Forward in Faith Committee. He also serves as an Ecclesiastical Counselor to the Centesimus Annus Pro Pontifice Foundation.
Much of Bishop Fisher’s ministry has involved the continuing education of priests, particularly in aiding new pastors in their roles and the planning and implementation of ongoing clergy training via convocations and retreats.

ESTABLISHMENT OF THE CATHOLIC
CHILDREN’S LEARNING CORPORATION
Eight longtime champions of Catholic Education have established the Catholic Children’s Learning Corporation (CCLC), a 501 (c) (3) charity <not-for-profit organization> to help financially support Catholic elementary schools in the eight counties of Western New York. The CCLC is an independent charity and is not affiliated with the Diocese of Buffalo. Its founders (Dr. Michael C. LaFever, John Vecchio, Patricia Pitts, Jeffrey T. Blair, Martha N. Lamparelli, Samuel F. Iraci Jr., Kevin Brayer, and Susan Swarts), all of whom will serve on the Board of Directors, are individual Catholics dedicated to ensuring children and families who desire a faith-based education will continue to have that opportunity.Dr. LaFever said the organization believes Catholic schools are a critical part of the Church’s mission for the evangelization of future generations of Catholics.
The CCLC board feels the current financial model of supporting Catholic schools is not sustainable. It is critical that tuition remain affordable for everyone so Catholic education does not become a private school enterprise; only available to those who have the resources to afford it. This is contrary to the church’s mission. “The CCLC stands ready to financially support Catholic schools through an approach that may be a future model for Catholic schools throughout the state and nationally. Future financing of the schools needs to have a consistent income stream in addition to tuition and the gifts <generosity> of others,” Dr. LaFever said. To accomplish this, the CCLC proposes to find ways to engage in the creation of businesses, financial project, and business partnerships to create the needed income for the schools on an annual basis. This could include activities in real-estate development, small business operations and intellectual properties. Currently, the board is in the process of exploring all of these possibilities.
The CCLC Board is looking for likeminded individuals to join its efforts to initiate its first projects. The CCLC can be contacted at cclcbuffalo@gmail.com
Additional information about the CCLC is available at www.cclcbuffalo.org Though the CCLC will not conduct fundraisers, there is a place on its website for anyone interested in donating to the CCLC at: https://www.cclcbuffalo.org/donate All funds go directly to Catholic schools in Western New York. The CCLC is in no way connected to the Diocese of Buffalo. You can find this article in it’s entirety and more information about the CCLC on our website at saintchris.org
