WELCOME/MISSION & PURPOSE:

Welcome:

Thank you for choosing to attend California Institute of Massage & Spa Services (CIMSS). We recognize our students

who attend the Institute have both personal and professional, career oriented goals. We are committed to supporting you in reaching your educational goals

Mission and Purpose: We offer a career-oriented training program. The field of holistic health continues to grow rapidly. Research proves that massage is clearly a frontrunner in expanding awareness and maintaining personal health. Students who successfully complete these programs will have the skills to set up and maintain a professional private practice. Many of our graduates are successfully employed part-time or full-time in a variety of settings, including spas, salons, chiropractic offices and many other facilities. Some of our graduates teach here at CIMSS and in schools throughout California and across the country. The Programs at CIMSS follow a holistic model of integrating body, mind and spirit. We blend the principles and practices of bodywork with techniques for self-awareness. Emphasis throughout the program is on developing keen observation and refined, compassionate touch. We encourage practitioner self-care through skilled body mechanics. Using grounding and centering techniques, conscious breathing, stretches and visualization, students learn to remain open and relaxed while developing greater physical and emotional sensitivity. Many valuable skills are developed over the length of the class through student participation within the classroom. We encourage outside practice hours as practice hours serve as a building block for the student’s professional future. A Caring Environment: We are located in the city of Sonoma just seven blocks off the historic Sonoma Plaza in a beautiful, colorful, light-filled environment. Our location includes a comfortable classroom, teaching/conference room, three smaller rooms for private treatment rooms and as additional teaching space, two handicap restrooms and school offices. Classes are small and informal, allowing for maximum personal attention. We are wheelchair accessible.

CIMSS is a private institution and it is approved to operate by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education. This does not imply that the Bureau endorses our programs, or that Bureau approval means the institution exceeds minimum state standard. Bureau approval to operate means it is in compliance with the laws and regulations set forth by the California Private Postsecondary Education Act of 2009.

CIMSS does not have a pending petition in bankruptcy, is not operating as a debtor in possession, has not filed a petition within the preceding five years and has not had a petition in bankruptcy filed against it within the preceding five years that resulted in reorganization under Chapter 11 of the United States bankruptcy Code (11 U.S.C. Sec. 1101 etseq.).

ADMISSIONS AND PROGRAM PREREQUISITES:

Admissions Requirements: Entrance to any of our training programs is open to persons over 18. Students are accepted if they demonstrate the ability to succeed in their objectives, whether personal or professional. Prospective students intending to enroll in a Program need to provide a High School Diploma, GED or equivalent previous education or take an Ability To Benefit Test. The Ability to Benefit Test is the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test (WBST) Verbal Forms VS-1 & VS-2 Passing Scores: Verbal (200), Quantitative (210) and is administered by a third party.

It is necessary to be in good health. The practice of massage requires the ability to stand for an hour or more at a time while working with your full body, especially hands, arms, legs and back. If you have ever had any injuries to your legs, arms, or spine, consult your physician to assess your ability to perform massage.

Enrollment Process: Students may enroll in person, by mail or on-line. Prospective students are invited to visit the school to discuss personal, educational and vocational goals prior to enrolling. Please call us to set up an interview. If you live out of this area, the interview may be conducted by telephone. At your interview, you will tour the facility and discuss school requirements and a payment plan. After choosing to attend CIMSS, please submit the enrollment agreement and fee of $250 for Massage Technician Program and any class that is 100 hours or more. This $250 program or class fee is in addition to the tuition and book/supply fees. There is a $100 fee for any short-hour workshop for which you would like to register. This $100 workshop fee is part of the tuition for the workshop. Payments may be made by check, cash or credit card at the time of registration. These fees are non-refundable after the first day of class.

Language Comprehension Skills: CIMSS conducts all classes in English and requires that all students to be able to understand all spoken and printed material. CIMSS does not provide English-as-a-Second-Language training. Cimss does not accept students from all foreign countries and does not provide visa services.

Evaluation for Students with Previous Training in Massage for Enrollment in Programs: Evaluation and placement at CIMSS will be based upon prior study from California licensed or California approved schools. This process includes a personal interview with the Director that may be in person or by phone. A hands-on review will be offered when deemed necessary. CIMSS has not entered into an articulation or transfer agreement with any other college or university.

Transfer Credit Policy for Previous Training: This concept applies for students who want to have a single “transcript” from only our school. CIMSS does not accept transfer credits from other schools. CIMSS only provides transcript results for hours completed at CIMSS. This means that a student having education from another school needs to also request a transcript for any hours they may want to submit to CAMTC from their previous school.. Transcript hours are only accepted by CAMTC from CAMTC approved schools. Bureau approval to operate means it is in compliance with the laws and regulations set forth by the California Private Postsecondary Education Act of 2009.

NOTICE CONCERNING TRANSFERABILITY OF CREDITS AND CREDENTIALS EARNED AT OUR INSTITUTION

The transferability of credits you earn at California Institute of Massage & Spa Services is at the complete discretion of an institution to which you may seek to transfer. Acceptance of the certificate you earn in Massage Technician, Advanced I, Advanced II, Advanced III, Spa Services or Shiatsu is also at the complete discretion of the institution to which you may seek to transfer. If the credits that you earn at this institution are not accepted at the institution to which you seek to transfer, you may be required to repeat some or all of your coursework at that institution. For this reason you should make certain that you attendance at this institution will meet your educational goals. This may include contacting an institution to which you may seek to transfer after attending California Institute of Massage & Spa Services to determine if your credits will transfer.

California Regulations for Massage: There are currently optional requirements by the state for massage in California. Optional registration as a Certified Massage Therapist (500 hours) is available through California Massage Therapy Council. CAMTC certification requires that the student shall have attended 500 supervised hours total with 100 of those hours satisfying CAMTC specified subjects. Visit them on-line at www.camtc.com for further information. Be sure to inquire about local licensing requirements before enrolling in classes. Massage practitioners are generally licensed by the city in which they work. Some cities require

Certification with CAMTC and some do not. A certificate of completion in massage from a BPPE approved massage school does not always transfer outside of California. Additional classes and hours may be required in other states.

CAMTC’s Law related to unfair business practices as related to massage: Pursuant to California Business and Professions Code section 4611: It is an unfair business practice for a person to do any of the following: (a) To hold himself or herself

out or to use the little of “certified massage therapist” or “certified massage practitioner” or any other term, such as “licensed”, “certified”, “CMT” or “CMP” in any manner whatsoever that implies or suggests that the person is certified as a massage therapist or massage practitioner unless that person currently holds an active and valid certification issued by the California Massage Therapy Council. (b) To falsely state or advertise or put out any sign or put out any sign of card or other device, or to falsely represent to the public through any print or electronic media that he or she or any other individual is licensed, certified, or registered by a

governmental agency as a massage therapist or massage practitioner.

CIMSS DIRECTOR & INSTRUCTORS:

CIMSS is staffed by professionals with successful practices in both massage and spa services. They are specialists in their fields, with many years of teaching and work experience. CIMSS is privileged to have such an exceptional group of conscious, heart-centered educators.

Hire date: 1992 – Present: Kate Alves: Director and Instructor: Massage Technician, Advanced I, Advanced II, Advanced III, Spa Services: Kate Alves, owner and director of CIMSS holds a B.A. and a California Teaching Credential from U. C. Santa Barbara and a Masters of Spiritual Science from Peace Theological Seminary and College of Philosophy. In 1980 she began studying massage at the Santa Monica School of Massage. In 1981, she joined the original staff at the Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa. During her 16+ years at SMI, she assisted in the development of new spa treatments and facilitated staff training. Her professional career includes private practice in chiropractic and medical settings, and she taught therapeutic massage at Napa Valley College from 1982-2009. “I love doing massage,” she says, “because I facilitate the possibility of greater health and well being in others. Peace becomes possible.”

Kate fulfilled her dream of developing a professional, California State approved educational program in 1992 with the opening of CIMSS. Kate is dedicated to providing high quality client services and promoting the growing field of massage and spa therapies through CIMSS. She uses a holistic approach in her teaching, encouraging students to explore the interplay of body, mind, heart and soul as they discover new possibilities within themselves through the art of touch.

Hire date: 2010 – Present: Jayne Brogan: Massage Technician, BodyTalk Access; A&P: Massage, A&P, Access Instructor and Reiki Master has been a CMT since 1993 and worked with the BodyTalk System since 2003. As owner of BodyTalk Sonoma, she integrates BodyTalk into her massage sessions and with her class, BodyTalk Access, she is also able to provide clients with tools they can use to retain the benefits of their sessions. Jayne is a wonderful instructor in our evening Massage Technician Program and is a huge asset to all here at CIMSS.

Hire date: 2015 – Present: Dawn Castiglione: Geriatric Massage: Dawn is a Licensed & Certified Massage Therapist. Her area of specialty is Geriatric & Degenerative Condition Massage Therapy, holding an advanced certification enabling her to focus on those with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Stroke, Diabetes, and other chronic degenerative illness. She has been a teacher and motivational speaker at the national level for more than 25 years. Her most recent endeavors are as an Educator for the Daybreak Geriatric Massage Institute, teaching nationwide those who strive to enter the Geriatric Field of Massage Therapy as their career and passion. She continues to work in her private practice and working in spa settings..

Hire date: 2001 – Present: Marilyn Draper: Lomi Lomi Massage: Marilyn lived on the island of Kauai from 1993 to 1997, and fell in love with lomi lomi massage. She studied it and then became an apprentice with her teacher learning and mastering her teaching skills.

She has been instrumental in bringing this incredible modality to the main land both in her active private practice and through teaching…at least here in California. She loves sharing this style of massage with new students as it always brings back that feeling she first had when she discovered it. Her teaching strengths

include listening, patience, and a solid and intuitive knowledge of lomi lomi. Marilyn recognizes that each student has a different way they learn and she taps into that, so each student successfully maximizes new skills of lomi lomi massage they can enjoy for years in their career.

Hire date: 2014 – Present: Thomas Estes: Hot Stone: As a teacher of both culinary and massage technique and arts, Thomas takes great pride in presenting relevant material packed with information, discussion and hands-on course work. As a teacher of CIMSS’s Sonoma Stone Massage, he continues to share his passion for this wonderful technique. He also appreciates how much he learns, himself, as a teacher benefiting from each student’s participation in his classes. His work is ever expanding as he continues to develop more creative skills and understanding of stones. He enjoys sharing these concepts with his classes. Thomas has worked in Napa and Sonoma Counties in a variety of Spa settings.

Hire date: 2015 – Present: Valerie Hopkins: Massage Technician, Adv I, Spa Services, Business & Ethics:Valerie Hopkins applied her business education for over 10 years in Operations and Business Development in Santa Rosa. Along side her husband she co-founded a Holistic Healing Center in 2005 where her expertise in business married her talent and desire to heal as a on-going Massage Therapist. Her passion lies in teaching and guiding students to cultivate not only a grounded and diverse repertoire of modalities but successful navigation of the business side of Bodywork.

Hire date: 2012 – Present: Lorin Laugesen: Massage Technician

Massage therapy has been a passion of Lorin’s for 30+ years allowing her to work in various settings: small spas and private practice. She considers teach massage therapy as an honor. It gives her great pleasure to know that she is passing on the gift of natural healing alternatives through the compassionate gift of touch. She loves all the students she has had the opportunity to teach at CIMSS. Each student has enhanced her teaching style as she has discovered how to teach each student in ways they can best receive the information while honing their massage skills.

Hire date: 2010 – Present: Dr. James Mally: Instructor: Sports Massage, Deep Tissue, Side-Lying Deep Tissue, Advanced A&P: James is licensed as a Naturopathic Doctor in California, and has been doing massage professionally in many different settings since 1975. He is a graduate of Bastyr University in Seattle, and the Lindsey Hopkins School, a 1000 hour massage training program. He is able to integrate his thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology with the practice of massage. He has been teaching massage certification programs since 1979, and was director of Healing Arts Institute in Citrus Heights, California for 21 years. He is currently engaged in private practice, DVD production, and teaching advanced classes in deep tissue massage, sports massage, and anatomy in massage schools around the world. James R. Mally, N.D. is approved by the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) as a continuing education Approved Provider. Provider # 451329-10.Hire date: 2015 - Present: Katherine “Widad” Mattia: Seven Levels of Injury Prevention Techniques, A&P: Widad has been a certified massage therapist since 1984. Practicing embodied anatomy at the beginning of her massage career, she taught dance, yoga and releasing the body in community schools and accredited yoga/kinesiology classes in community college. Widad has over a decade of extensive training and apprenticeship in teaching energetic medicine. As a teacher Widad has integrated a full spectrum of anatomical knowledge, massage techniques and energetic health.

Hire date: 2015 to Present: Teresa Nead: Instructor: Myofascial Release Massage, Side-Lying Massage, Lymphatic Massage, Sonoma Stone. Teresa have been a bodywork instructor since 1997, teaching in a broad array of massage and bodywork modalities to include all of the Fundamentals of Therapeutic Massage and Advanced Techniques to include, Myofascial Release, Neuromuscular Strumming, Prenatal Massage, Hot Stone Therapy, Lymphatic Drainage and more. Additionally she has built curriculum since 1997 that other instructors were required to follow. Hire date: 2004 – Present: Gary Ruiz: Instructor: Shiatsu: Gary graduated from the Acupressure Institute in 1991. His continuing education courses include Tui Na, Sports Acupressure, Shiatsu, Reiki, Chakra Balancing and Chinese Medicine. He holds a 1992 apprentice degree with Touch of Sun shiatsu and herbal master David Kukkola. Gary incorporates shiatsu with energetics, herbs, foods, and ceremony. Gary began a shiatsu practice in 1991 at Touch of Sun in Pleasant Hill until creating Sonoma’s Shiatsu Healing Therapy in 1994. Where he continues a private practice to this day. He has taught groups, organizations, and individuals since moving to Sonoma and is currently teaching Shiatsu at CIMSS. “Creating community with practitioners and others interested in different forms of wellness is an exciting goal and strengthens all of us to grow and have fun.”

Hire date: 1992 - Present: Suzanne Shonbrun: Massage Technician Program, Advanced I Program, Advanced II,

A&P:Suzanne was co-founder of CIMSS and co-owner during the early years of CIMSS. She has been teaching anatomy and physiology since the school’s creation. Her lifelong fascination with human movement and dance lead to a B.A. in Dance Education through Skidmore College. An interest in injury prevention and treatment spurred her to study massage at the Swedish Institute of Massage in New York City, where she graduated in 1978. She has practiced massage for over 40 years, specializing in Trigger Point Therapy. She has been teaching since 1992. Suzanne is also a Yoga and Pilates instructor who incorporates stretching and strength training in her anatomy classes. She believes that studying the human body should be interesting and fun.

Hire date: 2014 - Present: Tihm Watson: Thai Massage:Tihm grew up in Thailand and learned how to do Thai massage as a young child. She have also taken many Thai classes from some of the best Thai teachers in Thailand and feels passionate about the subject. She loves teaching and watching people improve their attitudes and techniques as they practice the art of Thai massage by understanding the whys and wherefores of the reasoning behind the implementation of an action and it’s expected result for the body of the receiver of Thai massage. Her standards are high, keeping close to the original teaching while being open to new interpretations as the years pass. Tihm has worked in a variety of Spas in Napa County since 2011 until the present time.

INSTRUCTIONAL CALENDAR:

Trimester Schedule: Programs are offered throughout the year, based on sufficient enrollment. Program and class tarting dates usually occur in February/March, June/July, and September/October. Workshops are scheduled by instructor availability and student interest throughout the year. Programs and workshops are offered evenings, weekdays, and weekends at various times any time from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. throughout the year. The day and time of some classes vary each semester, so the student is advised to consult a current Schedule of Classes, which may be obtained from the office, by mail or email. Students should consult the class schedule before planning vacations or travel.

Holidays: California Institute of Massage & Spa Services is closed on July 4th, Thanksgiving week and two weeks around Christmas

and New Year’s. There may be open time between the end of a semester and the beginning of the next one and occasionally during a semester.

Class Cancellations: Students are contacted if an instructor needs to reschedule a class. In the case of severe weather, call the school before leaving home to be sure the school has not been closed. A missed class will be rescheduled on a day and time agreed upon by the instructor and students.

CIMSS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS/TUITION & FEES/STRF:

We have 871 credit hours available through six programs. The only required program for certificate of completion is the Massage Technician Program. All other programs are taken at the discretion of the student. This provides the student more choice of study and flexibility with their schedule. While these programs have been designed to meet the requirements of some of the local cities and employers, licensing and hiring requirements do vary from city to city. CIMSS programs meet the hour requirements for becoming certified through CAMTC that is now required by a number of cities and employers. The student is advised to research the licensing requirements in his or her city. All of our programs, classes and workshops are held on-site at CIMSS, 772 West Napa Street, Sonoma, CA 95476. There are occasional fieldtrips and retreats designed to enhance the educational experience for the student. Students are encouraged to review the CAMTC website at www.camtc.org to educate themselves further about current CAMTC regulations. CIMSS does not participate in Federal or State Financial Aide Programs. CIMSS is not accredited by an accrediting agency approved by the U.S. Dept. of Education.

CIMSS Standards for Student Achievement: CIMSS seriously values the success of each student no matter how they eventually plan to use their skills. We utilize various teaching methods that include a variety of learning styles that support the different needs of students by presenting relevant material packed with information, classroom discussion, demonstration and hands-on practice. We measure the levels of performance that we expect of all students at particular stages in the schooling process through observation, how a student participates in class discussions, anatomy and physiology review tests along with a final A&P test. There is also a final massage hands-on full body review scheduled for the students near the end of various classes. Please see specific details listed with each Program below.

The following information regarding Student Tuition Recovery Fund applies for all CIMSS Programs. Student Tuition Recovery Fund Disclosures :

“You must pay the state-imposed assessment for the Student Tuition Recovery Fund (STRF) if all of the following applies to you: You are a student, who is a California resident or in a residency program and prepays all or part of your tuition either by cash, guaranteed student loans or personal loans, and 2. Your total charges are not paid by any third-party payer such as an employer, government program or other payer unless you have a separate agreement to repay the third party.

You are not eligible for protection from the STRF and you are not required to pay the STRF assessment, if either of the following applies: 1. You are not a California resident or in a residency program. 2. Your total charges are paid by a third party, such as an employer, government program or other payer, and you have no separate agreement to repay the third party.”

“The State of California created the Student Tuition Recovery Fund (STRF) to relieve or mitigate economic losses suffered by students in educational programs who are California residents, or are enrolled in a residency programs attending certain schools regulated by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education.”

You may be eligible for STRF if you are a California resident or are enrolled in a residency program, prepaid tuition, paid the STRF assessment, and suffered an economic loss as a result of any of the following: 1. The school closed before the course of instruction was completed. 2. The school’s failure to pay refunds or charges on behalf of a student to a third party for license fees or any other purpose, or to provide equipment or materials for which a charge was collected within 180 days before the closure of the school.

3. The school’s failure to pay or reimburse loan proceeds under a federally guaranteed student loan program as required by law or to pay or reimburse proceeds received by the school prior to closure in excess of tuition and other costs. 4. There was a material failure to comply with the Act or this Division within 30 days before the school closed or, if the material failure began earlier than 30 days prior to closure, the period determined by the Bureau. 5. An inability after diligent efforts to prosecute, prove, and collect on a judgment against the institution for a violation of the Act.” However, no claim can be paid to any student without a social security number or a taxpayer identification number.

MASSAGE TECHNICIAN PROGRAM: 180 hours

Program Objectives for Massage Technician Program: 180 hours Job title: Massage Technician; Massage & Bodywork Practitioner Prerequisites: None

This program trains towards entry-level employment in the field of massage. Completion of any supervised curriculum hours of this program can be applied towards the 500-hour requirement for CAMTC Certification as a Certified Massage Therapist.

The massage curriculum for this Program includes:

Instruction preparing the student to provide professional-quality massage in Swedish massage and foot reflexology massage, practical use of aromatherapy in massage, anatomy, physiology & kinesiology, contraindications including pathology, health and hygiene, Self-care utilizing body mechanics, Instruction and discussion of personal ethics, boundaries, laws and regulations, affective client/therapist communication, business practices that include documentation, record keeping and career development.

Completion and Measurement of skills

By the conclusion of the Massage Technician Program the student will:

a)

Pass a written test on anatomy, physiology, pathology and kinesiology with 70% or better.

b)

Provide a practical, hands-on session as arranged by the instructor in order to demonstrate a full body massage.

c)

Turn in all outside assignments including review of A&P coloring book, Massage practice log, design for business card.

d) In order to receive a certificate of completion for the Massage Technician Program, you need to make up any hours missed that are more than 25% of the complete Program time. You can make it up with scheduled, supervised time with an instructor. There may be an additional cost of $35 an hour.

The Massage Technician Program curriculum consists of the following:

ADVANCED I PROGRAM: 120 hours

Program Objectives for Advanced Massage I Program: 120 hours Job title: Massage & Bodywork Practitioner

Prerequisites: Massage Technician Program or something equivalent that is 100 hours or more of education in massage.

Completion of any supervised curriculum hours of this program can be applied towards the 500-hour requirement for CAMTC Certification as a Certified Massage Therapist.

This 120-hour program introduces massage professionals to additional styles of massage that develop more technical skills and awareness in their work. This program can be applied towards the 500-hour requirement for CAMTC Certification as a Certified Massage Therapist.

The massage curriculum for this Program includes:

The areas of study available as core classes include: Energy Balancing, Full Body Side-position Massage for pregnancy or injury, Trigger Point for specific area work and MBLEx Prep.

~Each hands-on core class focuses on indications and contraindications including pathology, of each massage modality, theory, demonstration and application of each modality, advanced anatomy, physiology and kinesiology emphasizing healthy functioning of the body including specific action, origin and insertion of muscles, Self-care utilizing body mechanics, ethics, health, hygiene, quality of touch, and ‘minding your own business’ practices.

This 124-hour program covers a variety of holistic treatments often offered in health spas. Students learn basic principles and applications for body care by utilizing massage techniques with natural practices and products. Classes cover: indications and contraindications of treatments, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, scrubs, wraps, traditional and lymphatic dry brushing, use of basic spa equipment, setting up the spa environment, and other spa services. Massage professionals can adapt these techniques to expand their practices and attract new clients.

SHIATSU PROGRAM: 160 hours

Program Objectives for Shiatsu Program: 160 hours Job title: Shiatsu Massage & Bodywork Practitioner Prerequisites: None

This 160-hour program examines the Traditional Chinese Medicine system of the meridians (energy pathways) as well as incorporating the Namikoshi style of shiatsu from Japan. Other systems that are explored are Tui Na, Barefoot Shiatsu, Zen Style and Chakras. In the 100 hour class, students are exposed to point location through the twelve basic meridians, yin/yang theory, and methods of client and self-assessment. Hands-on techniques include both floor and table work. Business, ethics and hygiene, along with the anatomy & physiology of shiatsu are also emphasized in this class. Incorporating these fundamentals gives the tools to expand the student’s professional practice.

$45. Student Insurance is optional & paid by student to Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals (ABMP) and covers practice done off site of CIMSS. CIMSS has insurance for all on-site coverage for students.

Prices of books/ supplies are subject to change in any of the programs offered.

TUITION PAYMENT:

Payments: The registration fee of $250 is paid at the time of registration for any Programs or classes that are 100 hours or more. Registration fee for any workshop that is less than 100 hours is $100 and is part of the workshop fee. Books/ Supplies are paid the first day of class. Payment of tuition is due the first day or in two installments made at the first scheduled class and at the midpoint of the class. When necessary, financial matters may be discussed regarding individually designed payment plans.

Financial Responsibilities: Students have the responsibility to pay for their training as agreed to in the enrollment agreement. While we offer a payment plan for the convenience of the student, we expect students to make payments in a timely manner and to complete payment for each class before the class is over unless there is a specific agreement with the Director. The final responsibility for payment rests with the student. We offer specifically designed payment plans on an individual basis. CIMSS has the option to drop any students who do not make payments in a timely manner from the classes in which they are enrolled unless there is an agreement in place with the Director of CIMSS. If a student obtains a loan to pay for an educational program, the student will have to repay the full amount of the loan plus interest, less the amount of any refund. If the student receives federal student financial aid funds, the student is entitled to a refund of the moneys not paid from federal financial aid funds.

Regarding Late Payments: There is a late fee of $25.00 per month attached to the student payment schedule when payment is delinquent by 7 days unless there is a prior arrangement made between the student and CIMSS. The late fee applies with each late payment. This school is held accountable to the State government for fiduciary responsibility. It is irresponsible and unfair to other students to allow a student to continue taking classes if that student fails to meet his/her financial obligations. The Director and student will discuss the factors that are affecting the student’s ability to pay his/her financial obligation and if necessary create a new payment schedule. If the new payment schedule is not adhered to it can lead to dismissal. If the payment is not completed by the end of the physical class, there will be a $50.00 fee applied each month the payment is delinquent.

STUDENT SERVICES:

This catalog contains information you will need to know while attending classes. Any changes in policies or procedures will be announced and clearly posted. It is the responsibility of each student to understand and comply with what is contained in this catalog. Class Cancellations: Announcements are provided if an instructor needs to reschedule a class. In the case of severe weather, call the school before leaving home to be sure the school has not been closed. A missed class will be rescheduled on a day and time agreed upon by the instructor and students.

Classroom Responsibility: Students are responsible for maintaining a professional classroom environment. Please report any broken or faulty equipment to the office immediately.

Classroom Equipment & Materials For All Program Use: Massage Tables, face cradles, stools, massage oils & lotions and

spa/class products, bolsters, blankets, hydrocolators, educational charts, library of massage related books and magazines, towel warmer, crock pots, extra sheets and towels when students forget their own sheets from home, skeleton, refrigerator, microwave, toaster, toaster oven, essential oils, cd player, tray tables.

Our Library of reference materials includes over 200 books on the bookshelf in the multipurpose room and many magazines for students to enjoy. Students have access to these books whenever they are on the premises.

Copy Machine: This is for instructors/office personnel ONLY. Ask for assistance when necessary.

Housing: It is your responsibility to find housing if you are attending a class and are from out of the area. There are many opportunities for overnight lodging in the Sonoma area. We are a non-residential school and do not offer dormitory facilities. The availability of housing located in the Sonoma area may be available by looking at airbnb, checking with the Sonoma Valley Visitors Bureau at 866-996-1090 or contacting the El Pueblo at 707-996-3651, a hotel that is located ½ block from our school. Their prices

vary depending on the season or time of the week, starting, during the summer at $199 and winter at $149. Please contact them for current pricing. They do offer our students a discount when they can.

Information Boards: An Information board is located at the school that may contain important information for faculty and students. With permission, students may place notices on bulletin boards that can remain for up to two weeks.

Personal Belongings: We encourage students NOT to bring jewelry to class,especially valuable jewelry. Please bring only items

that are necessary. Any valuable items should be left at home or stored in a safe and secure place before class. Please put your name and phone number on all books and equipment. If you have lost anything, or found anything, please notify your instructor. We are not responsible for any loss.

Placement Services: CIMSS does not provide placement services. When job opportunities come to our attention we post the information on our board. It is up to the individual student to inquire about any available positions.

Product Area:

Books and an assortment of massage products are available for purchase.

Student Injury: CIMSS students are covered by insurance for any issues that occur on CIMSS school premises. Students who pay

for optional student insurance are covered for any off site practice. This is not health or medical insurance. Students involved in an injury while in class are required to inform the instructor verbally and need to put it in writing and submit it to the instructor within 24 hours of the incident.

Telephones:All cell phones are to be turned off during class time unless per permission of instructor under special circumstances. Use of Facilities: Massage Technician students may reserve massage practice rooms for no additional fee. There is a small fee for advanced students. Inquire about current pricing.

Wheelchair Access: There is wheelchair access. The restrooms are also wheelchair accessible.

CIMSS EDUCATIONAL POLICIES:

Attendance and Tardiness Policy: As part of the compliance to receive a certificate of completion for a Program, students must

maintain regular attendance. Regular attendance means attending class during the scheduled hours unless informed of a time change by the instructor. Please call CIMSS 707.939.9431 to inform the instructor if a problem arises regarding being to class on time. Absences of more than 25% of class time during a Program or extended leaves of absence may require the scheduling of makeup classes with scheduled, supervised time with an instructor and there may be an additional cost of $35 an hour. CAMTC requires 500 supervised hours for applying for Certification. Transcript credit may not reflect completion of a Program, workshop or class. It only reflects supervised hours attended that have been recognized by the instructor as instruction received and learned.

Dropout Policy: A student will be considered dropped from the class when they have more than 25% unexcused absences from a

class they are enrolled in and have not informed CIMSS of their intention to continue with the class, take a leave of absence, or schedule make up classes.

Leave of Absence Policy: Students are encouraged to attend all class sessions. When that is not possible because of health or personal reasons it is sometimes necessary to request a leave of absence. The request is reviewed and granted at the discretion of the Director. The student needs to be re-enrolled within 12 months.

Student Assessment and Certification of Completion: California statutes require that a student who successfully completes a

course of instruction be awarded an appropriate diploma or certificate of completion verifying the fact. Requirements for completion include class participation including hands-on practice, demonstration of good body mechanics and excellent communication/boundary skills, completion of outside practice hours, payment in full of all tuition and fees, and a minimum-passing grade of 70% for practical exams in anatomy and physiology. Completion of an instructor/professional massage with satisfactory instructor evaluation is necessary when required. CAMTC requires a minimum of 500 supervised clock hours to meet the requirements for CAMTC Certification as a Massage Therapist.

When a student's progress is unsatisfactory, the instructor will notify the Director. All effort will be made to assist the student to improve. If, in the instructor and Director’s opinion, the student is not likely to complete the course successfully, the student will be so notified.

Student Records: State law requires CIMSS to maintain school student records. School records will be maintained for a minimum of 5 years and transcripts will be retained permanently.

From CAMTC: “Attendance and/or graduation from a California Massage Therapy Council approved school does not guarantee certification by CAMTC. Applicants for certification shall meet all requirements as listed in California Business and Professions Code sections 4600 et. seq.”

STANDARDS OF CONDUCT & PROFESSIONAL ETHICS:

Professional Boundaries/Appropriate Classroom Behavior: Professional boundaries create a safe environment for both the therapist and the client. Learn to take good care of yourself so you can take good care of clients during your career. While enrolled in CIMSS classes, you will experience giving and receiving massage. These experiences provide the foundation for developing and practicing what it really means to feel safe. We develop professional standards through grounding, centering, using appropriate body mechanics, breathing techniques, and clear and honest communication. You will learn to keep client communications confidential, stay within the scope of practice for massage, respect yourself and your client, “check in” with your client rather than assuming you know what they need or want, be aware of the impact of your touch, and be gentle in sensitive areas. Professionalism requires that you provide the highest quality service possible. Any misconduct will be taken seriously and may be grounds for dismissal from CIMSS. As a result of any misconduct, if dismissal is not enforced, there may be additional educational requirements in order to receive a certificate of completion. Failure to comply with Policies and Procedures outlined in this Catalog may result in dismissal.

Teacher/Student Relationships: The relationship between faculty and student is that of teacher and learner and is essential to the success of the program. The faculty is made up of professionals in their fields and ethical boundaries are respected in the classroom. We expect the same of our students. It is imperative that students respect the instructor and their methods of instructing. Instructor technique practiced by the student in the class needs to follow the modality of the class being offered. Student hands-on classroom practice is done in a give and receive method. We allow sufficient time in class for each student to receive the maximum benefit.

Confidentiality: Professional standards include confidentiality. Students are expected to respect personal information concerning faculty, staff, students, and outside or clinic practice clients. Discussion of outside practice clients can be done with care in the classroom knowing that information stays in the classroom. Faculty and staff members keep confidential personal information regarding students, including grades, academic status, health history, financial status and any other information garnered from any source about students.

exual Misconduct/Sexual Harassment: Any form of sexual harassment or other abusive behavior will not be tolerated. Students who observe or experience sexual harassment should report the incident to an instructor or the Director verbally and in writing. All complaints are taken seriously. We believe sexual misconduct demonstrates lack of boundary awareness/skills and will be immediately responded to.

Academic and Personal Ethics: Integrity is very important at CIMSS. It covers a variety of areas including not cheating on examinations or homework assignments, completing work on time and always working at one’s fullest potential. It is unacceptable to be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs while attending school, working on other students or clients in practice sessions or during other course requirements. The director or faculty may approve alcohol for occasional social events. No one under the legal drinking age for California may be allowed to consume any alcohol on the school premises. Please be respectful to all staff and students. Maintaining a safe and peaceful environment is essential for learning and for growth.

Professional Appearance: Students are required to have professional attire and good personal hygiene. While we do not require a uniform, we have certain guidelines. Wear appropriate clothing that respects modesty. Loose fabric or long sleeves can be bothersome while giving a massage. Low cut tops and short shorts are not considered professional attire. Shoes need to be comfortable, safe and appropriate for a work environment. Have clean, neatly groomed hair and short, clean fingernails. Take care to avoid any offensive odors, including body odor, bad-breath, and cigarette smoke. Do not wear perfumes and other scents in class due to possible allergic reactions from instructors or students. Leave jewelry at home.

Guidelines for Dressing and Undressing, Nudity & Draping: Modesty is to be respected at all times. Students will learn proper draping techniques so that the body is not completely uncovered in class. Generally, only the body area being massaged at the time is uncovered. Nudity is not permitted at any time in the presence of others. Students providing massages are always fully clothed.

Compensation for Massage: Massage Technician students are not allowed to receive compensation for massages done in the classroom or for outside practice hours. In order to set a fee and receive compensation it is necessary to meet local licensing requirements. Know your local law requirements. If a student working for payment without a license becomes the object of a complaint regarding personal injury, inappropriate behavior or unethical practice, such a person is not covered by liability insurance.

REFUND POLICY:

Canceling Enrollment Agreement

You have the right to cancel the enrollment agreement for a course of instruction including returning any equipment such as supplies or any other goods related to the instruction offered in the Agreement, until the end of the first day of instruction or the seventh day after enrollment, whichever is later. Cancellation shall occur when you give written notice of cancellation at the address of the school. The written notice of cancellation, if sent by mail, is effective when deposited in the mail properly addressed with postage prepaid. The written notice of cancellation need not take any particular form and, however expressed, it is effective if it shows that you no longer wish to be bound by the Enrollment Agreement.

If the school has given you any equipment, including books or other materials, you shall return it to the school within 30 days following the date of your notice of cancellation. If you fail to return this equipment, including books and other materials, in good condition within the 30-day period, the school may deduct its documented cost for the equipment from any refund that may be due to you. Once you pay for any equipment, it is yours to keep without further obligation.

If you cancel the Enrollment Agreement within the period allowed for cancellation, the school will refund any money you paid, less any deduction for equipment, within 30 days after your notice of cancellation.

Withdrawal from Courses

You have the right to withdraw from a course at any time. If you withdraw from the course after the period allowed for cancellation in the Enrollment Agreement, and before more than 60% of the course is completed, the school will remit a refund less the registration fee of $250 or $100 within 30 days following your withdrawal. You are obligated to pay only for any and all educational services rendered and for un-returned equipment. The refund shall be the amount you paid (+) for instruction minus (-) the cash value of the number of hours for which you have not yet received instruction, but for which you have paid. You shall be liable for the amount ($) for any hours of instruction you have received and not yet paid.

If you obtain equipment, as specified in the agreement as a separate charge, and return it in good condition within 30 days following the date of your withdrawal, the school shall refund the charge for the equipment paid by you. If you fail to return the equipment in good condition, allowing for reasonable wear and tear, within the 30-day period, the school may offset against any refund the documented cost to the school of that equipment. You shall be liable for the documented cost of unpaid equipment exceeding the prorated refund amount. The documented cost of the equipment may be less than the amount charged in the contract. In any event, you will never be charged for more than the equipment charges stated in the contract. For a list of charges, see the Enrollment Agreement. IF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID IS MORE THAN THE AMOUNT YOU OWE FOR THE TIME YOU ATTENDED, THEN A REFUND WILL BE MADE WITHIN 30 DAYS OF WITHDRAWAL. IF THE AMOUNT YOU OWE IS MORE THAN THE AMOUNT YOU HAVE ALREADY PAID, THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS TO PAY FOR IT.

We do not participate in Federal and State Financial Aide Programs.

Persons seeking resolution of any issues should first contact orally or in writing the instructor in charge. Requests for further action may be made to the director of CIMSS who will investigate the situation thoroughly.
