The Context Bible

Want to read the Bible all the way through in 2020? Ever tried to do it before and had trouble wading through some of Leviticus,

Numbers, and Deuteronomy before you heard the Good News about Jesus? Maybe you've never read the Bible because you couldn't put it into context. Mark Lanier introduces "The Context Bible". Using The Gospel of John, The Acts of the Apostles, and the Book of Revelation as anchor texts, daily readings covering all the books of the Bible will be applied to each week's verses.

This is a Bible assembled differently than most. Rather than using the church’s traditional method of assembling the books into the order that history has delivered (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, etc.), this Bible is assembled around three core books – The Gospel of John, the Acts of the Apostles, and the Revelation. These three books form the basic platform of reading each day. The rest of Scripture is divided up into supplemental readings each day tied to the particular passage read from John, Acts, or Revelation.

Sometimes the supplemental readings are referenced directly by the core passage. Other times the supplemental readings are merely alluded to. Still other times, the supplemental readings simply follow a common theme, provide additional detail, or set forth a context for understanding the terminology or history referred to in the main passage. In a few rare cases, the supplemental readings are there to provide a useful contrast, so that one can more fully

understand the passages.

As you read the daily passages consider how the supplemental readings fit with the core text by giving background information, expanding on what the core text says, or just complementing the core text.

January 27th

John 2: The wedding feast in Cana. We read the Song of Solomon to learn what true love is between a man and a woman.

February 15th

John 4: As Jesus talks with the woman at the well, we read some background of the Samaritans and their relation to the Jews.

February 23rd

John 4: Jesus goes into Galilee where he preached the Sermon on the Mount. We insert that reading at this point.

May 26th

Acts 7: Stephen gives his defense before the Jewish court. To better understand his sermon, we read the background material of the nation of Israel.

July 24rd

Acts 14: After Paul’s 1st _{Journey, it is likely that he wrote the letter of}

Galatians. We will read that letter here.

August 17th

Acts 17: While either in Athens or at Corinth, Paul writes his letters to the church at Thessalonica. Read those letters here.

August 25th

Acts 19: While on his 3rd Journey, Paul writes 1 & 2 Corinthians.
