Prelude

Jubilate Deo; Alleluia! O be joyful in the Lord; Alleluia!

University of Alabama Chorus (2018) Dr. Andrew Minear, Conductor

* Call to Worship

Leader: Praise the Lord! How good it is to sing praises to our God;

People: For God is gracious and a song of praise is fitting.

Leader: Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on the lyre.

People: He covers the heavens with clouds, prepares rain for the earth, and makes grass grow on the hills.

Leader: The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.

People: Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!

All: Let us worship God! Adapted from Psalm 147

* Hymn 686 God of Our Life SANDON

God of our life, through all the circling years, we trust in thee. In all the past, through all our hopes and fears, thy hand we see. With each new day, when morning

lifts the veil, we own thy mercies, Lord, which never fail.

God of the past, our times are in thy hand. With us abide. Lead us by faith to hope's true promised land. Be thou our guide. With thee to bless, the darkness shines as light,

and faith's fair vision changes into sight.

God of the coming years, through paths unknown we follow thee. When we are strong, Lord, leave us not alone. Our refuge be. Be thou for us in life our daily bread, our

heart's true home when all our years have sped.

* Prayer of Confession Jessica Gosa

Holy God, we are looking for you. We have forgotten your greatest gift, your son Jesus Christ, and we have forgotten his teachings. Where we think of ourselves, he thought of neighbors. Where we follow others, he took direction from God. Where we seek preoccupation and distraction, he sought stillness and renewal. Help us, in our own small way, to be more like your compassionate Christ. Shape our thoughts, sift our feelings, guide our efforts, bless our abilities, that we may get the best out of each day and give the best to those around us. Through the grace of Christ Jesus our Redeemer. (A pause for silent individual confession follows.)

* Assurance of Pardon Jessica Gosa

* Gloria Patri Hymn 581 * Passing of the Peace Jessica Gosa

Leader: The Peace of Christ be with you.

People: And also with you.

Proclaim God’s Word

Word for the Children

Prayer for Illumination Kat Brockmann Scripture Reading: Mark 1:29-39 Kat Brockmann

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord.

* Hymn 314 Longing for Light, We Wait in Darkness CHRIST, BE OUR LIGHT

Longing for light, we wait in darkness. Longing for truth, we turn to you. Make us your own, your holy people, light for the world to see. Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine

through the darkness. Christ, be our light! Shine in your church gathered today. Longing for peace, our world is troubled. Longing for hope, many despair. Your word alone has power to save us. Make us your living voice. Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine

through the darkness. Christ, be our light! Shine in your church gathered today.

Longing for food, many are hungry. Longing for water, many still thirst. Make us your bread, broken for others, shared until all are fed. Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine

through the darkness. Christ, be our light! Shine in your church gathered today. Longing for shelter, many are homeless. Longing for warmth, many are cold. Make us your building, sheltering others, walls made of living stone. Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.

Shine through the darkness. Christ, be our light! Shine in your church gathered today. Many the gifts, many the people, many the hearts that yearn to belong. Let us be servants to one another, making your kingdom come. Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine

* Affirmation of Faith: Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Concerns of the Church

Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Go in God’s Name

* Hymn 307 God of Grace and God of Glory CWM RHONDDA God of grace and God of glory, on thy people pour thy power; crown thine ancient church's story;

bring its bud to glorious flower. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour, for the facing of this hour.

Lo! the hosts of evil round us scorn thy Christ, assail his ways! From the fears that long have bound us free our hearts to faith and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the

living of these days, for the living of these days.

Cure thy children's warring madness; bend our pride to thy control; shame our wanton, selfish gladness, rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, lest we miss

thy kingdom's goal, lest we miss thy kingdom's goal.

Save us from weak resignation to the evils we deplore. Let the gift of thy salvation be our glory evermore. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, serving thee whom we

adore, serving thee whom we adore.

* Charge and Benediction

* Benediction Response Irish Blessing arr. James Moore

May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields and

until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Music Notes:

For College Sunday, our Offertory today features four of our wonderful University of Alabama students from Sanctuary Choir. All four are vocally gifted and much loved by their fellow singers and by me.

SARAH QUINN RICHEY – Music Education major from Albertville, AL. She plays French Horn and Flugelhorn in the Million Dollar Band, and her mom is the Music Director at FPC/Albertville.

JULIE POTTS – graduate of Birmingham Southern College, and now in her second year at the UA School of Law. Julie is from Tuscaloosa and is the daughter of Danny and Ellen Potts. The other sopranos in Sanctuary Choir fight over who gets to sit next to Julie.

ABIGAIL MYERS – Microbiology major from Memphis, TN. Abby was accepted as a music minor this year, and is a blessing to any choir due to her incredible range.

NOAH BURNS – Music Education (Choral) major from Birmingham, AL. Noah has a heart for working with children, and has served as a summer counselor at Blue Lake Camp in Michigan.
