Asia Academy of Management Abstract:
This session will help participants learn to teach gender and diversity courses at
undergraduate, MBA/MA/MS, and doctoral levels. Specific sessions on each level will be offered, along with sessions on teaching diversity in ethics, human resources, and
organizational behavior courses; facilitation skills, class conflict, and the instructor as medium; using experiential exercises; building support for and creating a business diversity minor; and teaching diversity in the Asia Pacific Rim context. We believe this is important because the demand for such courses has increased along with the increasing diversity of organization members and the increased awareness that diversity management affects organizational performance. Teaching such a course or incorporating it into other course content because few faculty have taken such courses themselves, the range of potential goals is large, the number of potential topics is large, and there is no standard model of what a course should incorporate or how it should be taught. This PDW will give experienced teachers an
opportunity to share their expertise with others and may also increase the number of courses or the inclusion of such content in other courses because of the increase in confidence about ability to teach the material.

7:45 – 8:00 Welcome and Introduction to Session
8:00 – 8:40 Presentation on Conflict & Facilitation Skills (Debbie Litvin, Merrimack College)
A professor will give a presentation about how to establish a safe class culture that will permit open discussions of touchy topics. This will include dealing with emotions, resistance, facilitation skills, etc. It will also include consideration of the position of instructor as medium.
8:40 – 9:20 Teaching Diversity in Other (HR, OB, Ethics) course content (James King, U of Alabama)
Many concepts central to diversity are conveyed in other
management courses, including HR, OB, and Ethics. A professor who has taught diversity in such courses will give presentations about how this is done effectively.
9:25 – 10:10 Presentation on Teaching Undergraduate Diversity Courses (Belle Rose Ragins, U of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Judith Clair, Boston College)
A team of two speakers will give a joint presentation about
teaching undergraduate courses on organizational diversity. The presentation will include suggested resources and materials. They will end by leading a Q & A session.
10:10 – 10:50 Gaining Support for and Creating a Diversity Minor (Mary Connerley, Virginia Tech)
A professor who has recently gained support for and created a diversity minor in the college of business at her university will give a presentation on how this was done, including what
courses to include in such a minor and finding competent faculty to teach such courses.
10:50 – 11:30 Presentation on Teaching an MBA/MS/MA or Doctoral Diversity Courses (Bernardo Ferdman, Alliant U.) A speaker will give a presentation about teaching MBA/MS/MA and doctoral courses on organizational diversity. The
presentation will include suggested resources and materials and a Q&A session.

9:25 – 10:00 Teaching diversity in the Asia Pacific Rim Context (Isabel Metz, U of Melbourne)
An experienced scholar will give a presentation on teaching gender and diversity in the Asia Pacific Rim Context, recognizing the need for education on teaching gender and diversity in a non-Western context and the need to be aware of context when
teaching such a course.
10:10 – 11:30 Presentation on Types & Uses of Exercises (Linda Hite, Kim McDonald, Indiana University Purdue-Fort Wayne)
Many gender and diversity classes utilize some type of
experiential activity, especially if affective or behavioral (skill building) goals are emphasized. Two experienced diversity professors will give a talk about the types and uses of experiential exercises. Some time will be spent actually participating in exercises as well (75-80 minute session). 11:30 – 11:40 Break & Return to Initial Room
11:40 – 12:00 Closing
Closing words will be offered and participants will complete a PDW evaluation form.
