Welcome to Rudolf Steiner College’s Summer 2015! We are excited to share details of our upcoming weeks of professional development workshops, programs, and teacher education courses. As we look forward to this summer’s experience, it is hard to imagine a more beautiful setting for summer study, networking, and renewal than our campus. The grounds provide an oasis of beauty and calm with wonderfully restorative energy that is now accompanied by a feeling of revitalization and new growth. Buildings and grounds are being refurbished and the gardens are bursting with blossoms. All we need now is you.
This summer, in addition to the in-depth experience Rudolf Steiner College is known for, we are highlighting several new offerings and improvements, to include:

Year One Summer Teacher Education Program Reimagined
In response to the changing field of Waldorf education, we are very excited to announce several revisions to our Year One Summer Teacher Education program. These include:
• A shorter Summer session, with a schedule that allows time for breathing, digestion, and relaxed social time with your cohort.
• For practicing teachers, time dedicated to support, guide and practically plan for the upcoming school year. • Recognizing that becoming a Waldorf teacher is a process that happens over time, our revised Year One program
includes Fall, Spring, and Summer sessions, and mentoring support by Rudolf Steiner College faculty. For more details on our Year One program, see page 14.
Art of Teaching Classes Refreshed
Our Art of Teaching classes, which provide invaluable, efficient preparation and rich resources for the upcoming school year, will be refreshed in the following ways:
• Daytime classes will combine experienced and new Waldorf teachers, encouraging opportunities for collegial work between all Waldorf teachers.
• Evening breakout sessions will give seasoned Waldorf teachers time to exchange best practices and deepen their knowledge while newer teachers address the “nuts and bolts” of preparation for the school year.

Rudolf Steiner College and MERISTEM Partnership Established
Our deeply held social mission, core to Steiner’s work, now finds a new and exciting expression through partnership and collaboration with MERISTEM.
As a Postsecondary Transition program for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental differences, MERISTEM will provide practical skills education, independent living skills, and a transition-to-work program all right here on the Rudolf Steiner campus.
We will welcome our first cohort of students to campus in September 2015. In addition to providing much-needed support for a growing population of young adults with ASD, we anticipate that this new step will greatly enrich our work at Rudolf Steiner College, providing opportunities for study, research, collaboration, and an expansion of the practical arts. There will be opportunities this summer for you to hear more about MERISTEM’s work at our Lunch and Learn session on July 15thwith RSC President Liz Beaven and MERISTEM President Oliver Cheney. What are we encountering in our classrooms and schools? How has expansion into public education impacted our collective work? What are the trends in school governance and leadership? This short workshop is a prerequisite for enrolling in Art of Teaching Workshops for any participant with limited classroom experience in Waldorf education. Liz will present core principles of the Waldorf approach including integration of the arts, human development, an overview of the curriculum, and the role of the teacher as an essential framework for understanding the content of the Art of Teaching weeks.
Workshops are offered prior to registration for both Art of Teaching weeks (Grades 5-8, Grades 1-4). Participants may enroll in either session, and will:

These efficiently designed, effective professional development workshops are very popular as refreshers for Waldorf teachers. Over the course of a week, we focus on curriculum, child development, and practical pedagogy for a specific grade. The Art of Teaching provides an overview of the developmental principles that stand at the heart of Waldorf education and inform the curriculum. Participants will feel prepared for the joys and opportunities of a new grade with renewed insight into its unique developmental phase, new ideas for classroom activities, and tips for practical planning.
Classes are taught by experienced Waldorf teachers. There is ample opportunity for the networking, hands-on learning, and professional exchange that is a unique benefit of a week-long intensive. A range of grade-specific arts is included in each course.
Participants will:

New this year: During the day, experienced and new teachers will learn together in the classroom. In the evening, seasoned teachers will gather in breakout sessions to deepen inner work, examine changing trends in childhood and in the classroom, and explore best practices. At the same time, teachers who are new to the Waldorf approach will receive guidance in more fundamental subjects such as lesson and block planning, and development of healthy rhythms to support teaching and learning.
Please note: We consider Art of Teaching workshops to be professional development for currently practicing,
experienced Waldorf teachers. An “experienced” teacher generally has had substantial training in Waldorf education and experience teaching in a Waldorf classroom. Familiarity with terms and principles of Waldorf education is assumed.
We offer Fundamentals in Waldorf Education preceding each Art of Teaching week as an essential framework for those with limited knowledge or experience in Waldorf teaching.
To those who are new to Waldorf education and who will be teaching in a Waldorf classroom for the first time without prior training, we recommend The Waldorf Approach for Public Schools (PSI). For more

Fundamentals of the Waldorf Preschool: Support for Nurturing 3- and 4-year-olds

Teachers, caregivers, and parents will gain many insights from this introductory course that covers healthy approaches to nurturing 3- and 4-year-olds who need to move and do! We will explore Rudolf Steiner’s philosophy of child development and current research on the young child’s developmental needs in the context of the Waldorf educational approach. Hands-on sessions will focus on creating a joyful circle time, puppetry, storytelling, movement, music, and nursery rhymes.

This introductory, week-long immersion workshop for teachers, caregivers, and parents will cover current research in early childhood development as well as Rudolf Steiner’s indications for the kindergarten-age child. Discussions will include the importance of play, the power of rhythm, working with parents and colleagues, school readiness, and much more. Join us for a practical workshop on working with children from birth-to-three. Explore the world of the very young child through observation, respectful interactions, hand gestures, games, and song. Gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between Waldorf early childhood education and the work of Dr. Emmi Pickler and the R.I.E. (Resources for Infant Educators) approach. An Intensive for Experienced Waldorf Early Childhood Educators

This workshop, led by Master Puppeteer Karen Viani, will include honing the art of storytelling with speech artist Helen Lubin, movement for marionettes with eurythmist Alice Stamm, and plant dyeing with Diana Collins. Participants will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of marionette construction, stringing, staging, performance, and moving marionettes. The Waldorf Approach for Public Schools: Pre K–8

This two-week institute is designed for teachers in any school setting. It focuses on ways to creatively integrate the arts and active learning into the public school curriculum, thus bringing learning to life for both teachers and students. Aspects of the Waldorf approach applicable in any classroom are presented, along with an exploration of child development. Participants
have extensive hands-on experience in storytelling, poetry recitation, drama, watercolor painting, clay modeling, drawing, movement, and music. Ways to connect children with the wonders of the natural world are explored. The institute also addresses important questions of assessment and standards, including enlivening the Common Core Standards. Classes are offered in grade-level tracks: Preschool/Kindergarten, Grades

Advanced Biodynamic Intensive
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10—SUNDAY, JUNE 14
with Harald Hoven and Cynthia Hoven
This intensive is the culmination of the biodynamic workshop series, deepening the practical activities learned so far. Every morning will begin with plant observation and study in the beautiful Raphael Garden, followed by discussion and eurythmy. There will also be an opportunity to answer questions that may have arisen during the year about the practical work.
Daily lectures will be presented to give a comprehensive insight into the philosophy underlying biodynamics. Topics will include the four elements, the four kingdoms of nature, and the levels of consciousness in each of them, and aspects of cosmic and earthly evolution.
This course is designed for people who have already taken the September through May Biodynamic Farming and
Gardening Workshop Series. Anyone else who wants to attend should have at least a general knowledge of biodynamics, either through practice or study.
Participants will:
• Gain insight into principles and philosophy of biodynamics • Receive answers to their questions regarding biodynamic practice • Deepen their practical experience

Biodynamic Education at Rudolf Steiner College
As a leading center for Biodynamic education, Rudolf Steiner College offers a wide array of workshops and conferences. Our Biodynamic Farming and Gardening workshop series combines classroom work with hands-on activity, culminating in a week-long intensive in June. Individual workshops on backyard gardening, beekeeping, and nature observation, and evening study courses are available throughout the year. Our full-time biodynamic farm apprenticeship program offers four apprentices one year of hands-on work in the Raphael Garden. The Alchemical Laboratory II: Medicinals
FRIDAY, JUNE 12—TUESDAY, JUNE 16
with Dennis Klocek and Matias Baker
Note: Although this course is entitled “part II” there are no prerequisites. To begin, there will be an overview of the issues in healing and illness. This will be supported by a review of simple alchemical processes. Recent research into creating salt signatures as diagnostic tools will be integrated into presentations on the production of medicinals. We will then explore prayer and meditation using forms in nature as aids to dialogue with elemental worlds that stand behind the transformation of substances
for the purpose of healing. Afternoon sessions led by Matias Baker will focus on practical exercises that explore form principles of plants and their dynamic relationships to minerals and animals.

Consciousness Studies
MONDAY, AUGUST 10—FRIDAY, AUGUST 28
with Dennis Klocek, Patricia Dickson, and Pamela Whitman
This popular three-week intensive covers basic principles of esoteric practices. Most esoteric traditions teach that a human being is composed of a physical body that is animated by a soul and a spirit. The soul and spirit are known traditionally as subtle bodies. Initiation is a dialogue process of inner transformation that works with these subtle bodies. This course will explore the fundamentals of this process through a combination of lecture, artistic work, and seminar conversations. Extra Lesson Educational Support Conference
Archetypes that Inform Our Work: The Form Within and Without
SUNDAY, AUGUST 2, 7PM-THURSDAY, AUGUST 6With Joep Eikenboom, Erica Eikenboom, Kris Boshell, Alice Stamm, and Jo-Ann Climenhage For practitioners with training in Remedial Education and the Extra Lesson.
The work of the Extra Lesson has a long and successful history of supporting students in overcoming challenges to their development, and addressing underlying causes for difficulties. In our materialistic, results-oriented culture, this approach is not always easily understood. This conference will review the archetypal images that inform teachers and the Extra Lesson itself.
We will focus on how to communicate the meaning of the archetypes and how to explain the importance of addressing the underlying causes for student difficulties in skills attainment, addressing developmental gaps, and bringing students to grade-level functioning.
Join us as Extra Lesson expert Joep Eikenboom leads us with lectures followed by workshop contributions by Joep and Erica Eikenboom, Kris Boshell, and Alice Stamm.
Participants will:
• Hone their skills in communicating with parents and colleagues • Deepen their understanding of underlying causes of student difficulties • Participate in artistic activity and eurythmy

Matriculated Programs
Waldorf Teacher Education Program (WTE)
Our Teacher Education program is offered through five modalities—Summer, Hybrid, Residential, Early Childhood In-Service, and Weekend/Summer—all of which lead to a Waldorf Teaching Diploma. All modalities except Early Childhood In-Service offer the opportunity to earn a California state-approved, non-accredited MA in Education, Waldorf Concentration. All the modalities include:
• Foundation Studies: Anthroposophy; Waldorf education philosophy; personal growth and development toward becoming successful Waldorf teachers through spiritual and philosophical studies, inner work, and an array of artistic classes, such as painting, drawing, music, clay modeling,
woodworking, eurythmy, gardening, drama, speech and handwork; other courses in the humanities, encompassing history and literature.
• Teacher Education: Waldorf curriculum overall and the curriculum and instruction in all aspects of your area of specialization (early childhood, grades or high school); other practical skills such as presentation, lesson planning, storytelling, working with parents and colleagues. Includes observation and practicum experience in a Waldorf classroom.
AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION:
Early Childhood
Our early childhood pedagogy is based on Rudolf Steiner’s framework of child development, the latest research, and our understanding of the need to protect the wonder of childhood, including the child’s right to learn through creative play. The curriculum is focused on developmentally appropriate caregiving and education with emphasis on the young child’s physical, emotional, and mental health. Students learn activities that help foster enthusiastic learning, intellectual growth, self-esteem, and social responsibility. Practice-teaching in a Waldorf classroom offers opportunities to enhance classroom skills, gain self-confidence through mentoring, and understand the complex responsibilities of becoming a Waldorf teacher.
Elementary Grades
In addition to studies of child development, Waldorf elementary grades (1–8) preparation includes pedagogy, methodology, creative integration of the arts, and practical aspects such as classroom management, the school as a community, and working with parents and colleagues. This program focuses on preparing teachers to guide children through the main lesson blocks, and to foster a genuine love of learning that each child will carry for a lifetime. The curriculum includes an exploration of all grades and subjects, concrete examples, and resources for lesson blocks in each of the eight grades, as well as practice teaching in which students are able to learn side-by-side with an experienced teacher.
High School
Teacher education for the Waldorf High school requires a strong background in one’s specific subject area, and an enthusiasm for working with the challenges of adolescence. Particular attention is given to the developmental stages of adolescence, who the student is and what he or she does in the world, and how lessons stimulate learning in the student through course content. Teachers are given tools to help students develop an appreciation for past cultural and individual contributions, to encourage them to grapple with issues of the day; to develop clear, flexible thinking, compassion for others, and a will to work. This specialization is offered through the Summer and Weekend/Summer Modalities.

WALDORF TEACHER EDUCATION MODALITIES
Summer Modality—Early Childhood, Grades, or High School
The Summer Modality of the Waldorf Teacher Education Program is a three-year training that consists of Foundation Studies and Teacher Education each summer, with additional work in the Fall and Spring terms of the first and second years, including observation and practice-teaching in Waldorf classrooms.
Summer modality students may elect to complete the MA option. MA work generally takes a minimum of three years to complete, part time; a new MA cohort is started every other year. MA studies must be taken concurrently with Teacher Education.
YEAR ONE
Classes will be held for 6 days each week, Monday, June 22-Saturday, July 11, 8am-5:45pm
Year One of our Summer Waldorf Teacher Education program has been reimagined and redesigned for 2015 based on feedback from students, teachers, and administrators.
This revised Summer Waldorf Teacher Education program is designed for students who desire to develop and healthily sustain teaching careers in early childhood, grades, or high school. It is appropriate for those wishing to teach in independent Waldorf schools or public Waldorf-inspired schools. (Note: Most states require that public school teachers
hold a valid state credential; Rudolf Steiner College courses do not lead to a state credential.)
Year One Students will:
• Study core principles of anthroposophy, the foundation of Waldorf education.
• All students entering Year One (early childhood, grades, high school) will join together for one week of Foundation Studies, followed by two weeks of classes in Waldorf curriculum and instruction, for a total of
18 days instruction.
• Foundation Studies include: Human development; the nature of the human being; evolution of consciousness; inner work and reflective practices; and immersion in a range of arts.
• Curriculum and Instruction: Mornings will be devoted to general principles of Waldorf curriculum and child development from preschool through 12th grade
• Afternoons will focus on areas of specialization: Early childhood, grades, or high school. • Evenings will be available for independent study, reading, or coffee and conversation.
• For those already working in the classroom, two evenings will be set aside for support and guidance by our faculty on the topic of practical planning for the upcoming school year.
• Summer work will be supported and enriched by Fall and Spring sessions. We understand that becoming a Waldorf teacher is a process that happens over time, not just in summer.
• Mentoring sessions will be available from RSC faculty during the school year. These will provide dedicated time for an individual to check in and get answers to questions. Mentoring sessions will be available via phone, Skype, or on the College campus.
• Year One and Two students will complete two periods of field experience (requirements differ for pre-service and currently-practicing teachers; these requirements will be presented to students during the Summer session). We warmly encourage you to begin your journey as a Waldorf teacher through this contemporary, hands-on, accessible program.

This three-year program meets in 3-week sessions every summer (including Foundation courses), plus six days in the Spring. This program includes continuing independent study, observation, and practice teaching in Waldorf schools during the school year. The curriculum this summer will cover Grades 6-8.
Hybrid Modality (Blended Learning)

This program is specifically designed to support active teachers in Public Schools inspired by Waldorf education.

This program meets over three consecutive summers for a two-week intensive Summer session, and through online webinars and over practicum weekends during the Fall and Spring terms of years one and two.
Also required are two weeks of Art of Teaching, one in each of two summers. The foundation and teacher education components are woven into the four primary areas of study: Ontology and Epistemology of Waldorf Education; The Artistic Approach in the Practice of Teaching Curriculum; Development, Differentiation, and Delivery; and Applied Research.
Remedial Education Program

Meals and Snacks
Break service is offered Monday-Friday, in the morning and in the afternoon. Meals are generally “flour-free”, however, we are not a certified “gluten free” kitchen, so, if you have several dietary restrictions, please make alternate plans for your meals.The morning break is not until 11am, so you may wish to grab a bite before class.
Please make meal choices as part of your registration as our multi-course meals often sell out during pre-registration. Meals must be cancelled at least 15 days prior to the course start date; after this date, meals are non-refundable. If you decide not to pre-register for meals, individual meals may be purchased from Clara’s Counter on a first-come, first-served basis.

No camping is allowed at Rudolf Steiner College or Sacramento Waldorf School. This includes all sleeping bags, tents, campers, RVs, and sleeping in your own personal vehicle.
