(2)

Why

Natural

Gas

Efficiency?

• If the energy efficiency of

commercial and industrial buildings

improved by just 10 percent:

– Customers would save $20 billion on

energy bills.

– Greenhouse gas emission reductions

would equal about 30 million vehicles.

(3)

Why

Natural

Gas

Efficiency?

• Save energy and money through

efficiency improvements in – Furnaces

– Boilers

– Water heaters

– Heating Equipment Tune‐ups – Heating Equipment Controls – Kitchen Equipment

(4)

Why

Natural

Gas

Efficiency?

• Efficiency helps protect the

environment for future generations

• If every gas water heater purchaser

in the U.S. chose an ENERGY STAR® qualified gas storage model over

standard, it would:

– Prevent one billion pounds of carbon

dioxide from entering the atmosphere. – Equivalent of creating 132,000 acres of

Retro

Commissioning

(joint Nicor Gas and ComEd program)

– Encourages businesses, whose utility services are provided

by Nicor Gas and ComEd,  to identify and implement low‐

cost tune‐ups and adjustments to their building controls

and HVAC. Offers a fully‐funded building assessment

• For smaller facilities, targets assessment of areas with substantial

energy savings opportunities such as packaged HVAC units • Larger facilities, targets a more comprehensive assessment of

building HVAC systems and automated building controls

(12)

Small

Business

Energy

Savings

(joint Nicor Gas and ComEd program)

– Small business customers of both Nicor Gas and ComEd are eligible

– Offers free energy assessment and cost‐effective turn‐key

energy efficiency upgrades

– Provides small business customers with both gas and

electric direct installation services and rebates to create a

more seamless offering from their utilities

(13)

New

Construction

(joint Nicor and ComEd program)

– Captures efficiency opportunities during the design and

construction of new buildings, major renovations of

existing buildings, and tenant build‐outs in the commercial

and industrial market currently within the Nicor and

ComEd service territory

– Comprehensive effort to overcome the barriers of

common practice of designing for worst‐case conditions

rather than efficiency over the range of expected

operating conditions

(14)

Emerging

Technologies

– Objective is to assess the appropriateness of

emerging gas technologies for inclusion in future

energy efficiency programs

– Determining whether new strategies, products or

devices are reliable, serviceable and provide cost

effective energy savings

– Scope includes residential, commercial, and industrial

customers in Nicor Gas service territory

(15)

Economic

Redevelopment

– Targets existing facilities and properties undergoing major

renovation in established “redevelopment areas”

Building

Performance

with

ENERGY

STAR®

(joint Nicor Gas and ComEd program)

– Encourages/assists business customers to take a planned

approach to increasing their existing buildings’ energy

efficiency by utilizing ENERGY STAR®’s portfolio manager,

this allows the building owner to compare their buildings

energy efficiency with similar facilities within the market

place

 Target participants

 Contact Information

(24)

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

 Joint electric/gas program

(ComEd/Nicor/Integrys)

 Retro-commissioning (RCx)

– Systematic process

– Identify low cost (not capital) opportunities

– Reduce gas and electrical consumption

– Investigate and implement control, operational, and maintenance

improvements

 Barrier to RCx

– Financial commitment for a study with unknown potential

 Incentive

– Fully funded study

(25)

Source: E SOURCE; data from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Portland Energy Conservation Inc., and Energy Systems Laboratory, Texas A&M University

For projects where deficiencies were characterized, 63 percent of problems were related to the overall HVAC system in some fashion.

Building system deficiencies

(26)

PROGRAM PROCESS

 Application

– Customer selects from a list of pre-qualified RCx service providers

(RSP)

– Customer fills out and submits application

– Nexant screens applicants for potential and cost-effectiveness

 Planning

– RSP performs a preliminary study

– Present to customer

– All parties agree to move forward: Program Agreement

 Investigation

– RSP conducts detailed investigation

 Implementation

– Customer implements measures with RSP support

(27)

TARGET PARTICIPANTS

Eligibility
