Wireless LAN Wireless Local Area Network. Refers to WiFi communications.

Wireless PAN Wireless Personal Area Network. Refers to Bluetooth communications.

Wireless WAN Wireless Wide Area Network. Refers to cellular voice and data communications such as GSM and CDMA.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth Class Defines the radio range. Class 1 approx. 100 m (300 ft) Class 2 approx. 10 m (30 ft) Class 3 approx. 1 m (3 ft)

Bluetooth EDR Enhanced Data Rate. Standard Bluetooth data transfer rate is 1 Mbit/s, EDR is 3 Mbit/s.

Voice Communications

CDMA Code Division Multiple Access. Digital voice communications. Used by Verizon, Sprint Nextel, and U.S. Cellular.

GSM Global System for Mobile Communication. Digital voice communications. Replaced analog cellular communications. Used by AT&T and T-Mobile in the US.

High Speed Downlink Packet Access. Enhanced voice and communications based on UMTS. Sometimes referred to as 3.5G communications.

- HSDPA - High Speed Downlink Packet Access. Increased downlink speeds over UMTS.

- HSUPA - High Speed Uplink Packet Access. Increased uplink speeds compared with UMTS.

HSPA is used when HSDPA and HSUPA deployed.

HSPA+ Evolved High Speed Packet Access. Roughly 2x the data transfer rate of HSPA.

LTE Long Term Evolution. High speed data communications. Based on GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA network technologies.
