Unified Communications, Security and Wireless Solutions.
The Greater New Bedford Community Health Center (GNBCHC) has been operating since 1981. GNBCHC serves over 20% of the Greater New Bedford population with several medical, dental and ancillary services.

GNBCHC continues to expand its services in the NB area. This expansion requires continued growth of its network infrastructure. GNBCHC needed a company to take a fresh look at the entire network and provide solutions that would incorporate Data, Voice, Video Surveillance. They also needed a partner that would be able to manage and deploy a network that provided a stable environment for Electronic Medical Records.

Technical Overview:
GNBCHC was experiencing network outages affecting its use of its Electronic Medical Records application. They also needed to provide a secure method of connectivity to remote offices and physicians.
Additionally, Ron Cooper – Director of I.T. and staff saw the need to upgrade the core network to provide a stable network environment both wired and wireless. He knew the current environment would not be able to maintain the continued growth and expansion necessary to provide adequate network services for the organization.
Ron called MTSi to work on several initiatives including: Core Switching Upgrade, New VOIP Phone System Installation, Wireless Overhaul, Video Surveillance Installation, Exchange Deployment. During these initiatives many alternatives were uncovered to GNBCHC to help them reach their goal, “Creating a Solid, Secure, Reliable Network with Data, Voice and Video”.

Since the year 2000 MTSi has continued to work with Ron Cooper on such initiatives. Currently MTSi has been able to provide onsite managed services and staff augmentation to Ron and the entire staff at GNBCHC.
Solutions Implemented:
After an extensive evaluation of the current network and many discussions regarding the future needs of GNBCHC, MTSi sat down and determined what technologies what be required to achieve the objectives and goals.
First and for most we identified the key core components to building a network to meet the Health Center’s needs. We partnered with Cisco Systems to build a core network that allow GNBCHC to build the foundation needed for voice, video and data.
MTSi arranged for GNBCHC to visit Cisco’s customer center in Boxboro to see the technologies Cisco has developed to meet the needs of GNBCHC today and into the future.
Our meeting focused on Cisco’s Unified Communications Platform along with Video Surveillance technology. This allowed GNBCHC to see these products in action and to use them the way they would be used at the health center.
After identifying the technology we would be using, we got to work, along with one of our strategic partners on a system design to wrap these solutions around a core network.
Together with our partners MTSi was able to implement a system wide network upgrade from the core to the end point along with new cabling where needed. This required creating and utilizing VLAN’s as well as implementing QOS across the network.
Upgrading the current network involved Installing Cisco’s Unified Wireless Networking Equipment which consisted of WAP’s and a WAP controller to manage and monitor the wireless infrastructure.
Our solutions involved building a Cisco switching foundation using 2 new data closets and upgrading the current server room with new switches.
Unified Communications platform from Cisco was then layered on the network. By reviewing GNBCHC phone bills, MTSi along with one of our strategic telecom partners, determined the Health Center could save nearly three thousand dollars a month by moving over to our partners Voice products.
Next on the agenda was a roll out of Cisco’s security solution. This would enable the security staff to monitor the busy hallways and waiting areas as well keep an eye the growing problem of equipment theft.

These solutions have provided GNBCHC 99% uptime allowing nurses and physicians reliable access Critical Patient Data. This has improved efficiency and better patient care, opening the doors to implementing new innovative healthcare technology.
It has allowed the Health Center to focus on initiatives such as meaningful use. Having the core
components they have been able to meet Federal Guidelines for meaningful use. This has allowed them to bring better patient care to over 20% of New Bedford residents.
- The Unified Communications Solutions from Cisco allowed GNBCHC to better communicate with its employees and partners both inside and outside the Health Center.
- Cisco’s Wireless Solution allowed wireless users the freedom to move about the Health Center and stay connected to critical patient data reliably.
- Cisco Security Solution has allowed the Health Center to provide better security to its staff and increase patient confidence in their own safety while visiting the Health Center.
The monthly savings on the phone bill has allowed a quick return on investment. GNBCHC has seen increased morale from the staff with lack of reliable access to critical data due to network issues eliminated.
These solutions along with our 24/7/365 Managed Services and onsite support has allowed GNBCHC to reach the goal of “Creating a Solid, Secure, Reliable Network with Data, Voice and Video”.
