HND in Health & Social Care (Level 5)

Program Objective - The course is aimed at those who have a commitment to gain an

understanding of health and social care activities and who want to pursue a career within these sectors. The Edexcel BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) are highly regarded, nationally and internationally recognised, undergraduate level programmes, equivalent to the first and second year of a university degree course. They are at Level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework. These Health and Social Care programmes have been designed to equip individuals with the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for employment in Health & Social Care, both in the UK and overseas. These qualifications meet and exceed the National minimum standard of qualification set by the Care Quality Commission for those practising in Health & Social Care in the UKHND Health & Social care is a two year programme. It leads to further academic and professional qualifications, and/or further career within the health & Social care sector. By completing this course a student can progress to a top up degree level 6 with many UK universities. The course is aimed at those who have a commitment to gain an understanding of health and social care activities and who want to pursue a career within these sectors. The course has been designed around the following themes: People, Values, Ethics and Equal Opportunities, Change, Law, Regulation and Guidance and Social Processes and these themes appear in all aspects of the course.

Specialist units Student may choose 10 specialist units depending on individual choice.

Assessment

A range of assessment methods is used which provide opportunities for learning as well as assessment. These include essays, reports, presentations, case study, personal profile and examination. All assessments are externally verified by Edexcel : assignments, individual or group presentations, projects, or examinations. Grades awarded are Pass, Merit and Distinction. There is no overall grade awarded for this qualification.

Progression

BTEC HNDs are well established qualifications with a proven track record of success. They are a recognised and popular route to university leading to the final year of a bachelor degree or to a specialised bachelor degree top up, which usually lasts 1 academic year.This course also prepares students for a wide range of careers in health and social care.

HND in Business (Level 5)

The HND in Business & Management is a modular business programme. It is a major workplace qualification course which includes a broad range of highly relevant business and management subject areas, making it ideal for those who have started, or are planning to move into, a career in private of public sector business. This HND is also recognised as being equivalent to the first two years of a UK degree. After 1 year of extra study, with entry into the 3rd and final year 3 at a UK, USA, or Australian University, it can become a BA Honours Degree. The HND in Business & Management has 16 units.

This management course is an important qualification for individuals aspiring to hold a position in

management, with the objective of building a portfolio of transferable skills to engage with business challenges. A practical programme designed to develop an understanding of the fundamental leadership and management skills and knowledge necessary for today’s competitive changing environment. The Level 2 Certificate in Book-keeping and Accounts further develops candidates’

understanding of the accounting principles for recording business transactions, as well as their ability to prepare and interpret accounts for different types of businesses. It is suitable for people working or intending to work in a role that involves maintaining financial records and preparing final accounts.

Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong

Learning Sector (PTLLS)

(FOR LOCAL STUDENTS)

An Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector covers the basics of teaching in continuing and adult education - including how to plan sessions, motivate learners and use a variety of assessment methods.

WHO IS IT FOR?

This Award is for new entrants to the Lifelong Learning Sector – you don’t need any prior teaching experience or qualifications. It also suits people working in the area already who want to gain official qualifications.

You should have an idea of what subject you’d like to teach, and either have or be working towards a qualification in that area.

The Level 3 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) is for pre-service and In-service teachers and trainers. It’s aimed at candidates who:

• would like or require an introduction to teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector or • are seeking career progression within their area of work or

• will be/are seeking to progress towards ATLS/QTLS status and/or • teach courses that aren’t publicly funded or

• are trainers in industry or

• technicians and support staff in further and adult education. The qualification is designed to enable candidates to:

• adopt an integrated approach to the theory and practice of teaching

• reflect on their own previous/current levels of experience, practice and skills, and areas for development

• identify principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation • develop confidence, communication and inter-personal skills

• develop an awareness of their professional role and responsibilities.

Computer Maintenance Course

CompTIA A+ certification validates foundation-level knowledge and skills necessary for a career in IT support. It is the starting point for a career. The course proves competence in areas such as installation, preventative maintenance, networking, security and troubleshooting. CompTIA A+ Practical Application is an extension of the knowledge and skills identified in CompTIA A+ Essentials, with more of a "hands-on" orientation focused on scenarios in which troubleshooting and tools must be applied to resolve problems.

Candidate job roles include technical support specialist, field service technician, IT support technician, IT support administrator and IT support specialist. CompTIA A+ is part of the certification track for

corporations such as Microsoft, HP and Cisco. Other technology companies, including Dell, Intel, Lenovo and Ricoh, have made CompTIA A+ certification mandatory for their service technicians. The U.S.

Department of Defense recognizes CompTIA A+ and the Department of Homeland Security requires it as part of their computer forensics program. The CompTIA A+ certification is accredited by the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) and the American National Standard (ANSI). The CompTIA A+ exam will be undertaken at the Luton International Test Centre on completion of the course.

Certified Network Associate Course

The course is aimed at those who wish to gain a better understanding of computer software. The course covers:

• How a network works

• Troubleshooting a switch with VLANs and interswitch communications • Troubleshooting basic router operation and routing on Cisco devices • Administrative tasks required for a WLAN

• Security threats to a network

• Implementing and verifying WAN links

Admission Procedures

Now that you have selected the course that you feel is ideal for you and know about Luton International College and living in Luton, the next step is to complete an application form and return it to the college with the following information:

• Photocopies of all your academic qualifications • Three passport size photographs

• Any other documents that you think may support your application e.g. an academic reference, employer’s references.

If your application is successful you will receive an acceptance letter for the course you have selected. This will include details of your tuition fees and potential living expenses. The college sends out an enrolment letter after the tuition fees have been paid. It should be noted that applicants from some overseas countries are required to obtain an enrolment letter for their visa application to be accepted.

You can either use the online Application Form or alternatively, download and print the pdf version so you can fill in by hand and post to us.

Tuition Fees and Methods of Payment

Tuition fees should be paid directly to the College by cheque, credit card, bankers draft or telegraphic transfer. Bankers drafts should be made payable to LIC and sent by courier or registered post to ensure security. When sending funds by telegraphic transfer, the sending bank will require the LIC bank account details shown below. When paying the tuition fees, always quote your full name, your application number if you have one and the course you are going to study. Some of our approved representatives overseas may accept Bank Drafts made payable to Luton International College, which they will forward to us, but not cash. With this exception you should not pay tuition fees to anyone else but the college. Please do not send money to us by post.
