INFORMATION

Advanced Employment Skills Certificate (AESC) Overview

This twenty-two month Certificate Program provides students with the opportunity to:

Gain valuable work experience with a local employer;

Earn 30 credits towards a UNBC degree;

Build computer, project management, interpersonal and digital marketing skills; and,

Obtain applied project planning and execution experience.

For the student, there is no cost to participation. Each student is placed with an employer full-time while the

employer covers the cost of tuition, accommodation in UNBC’s residence, and participation in UNBC’s food plan,

for 20 of the 22 months. During the two months where these costs are not covered by the employer sponsor (the

summer work term), the student will be paid a direct wage by their employer sponsor and offered a value added

package for accommodation by UNBC. Students are not paid during the program except for the summer work

term.

While working, students attend class in the evenings (two to three nights per week) and on weekends (one

weekend per semester) to avoid conflict with their full-time work. As part of the work commitment, students will

complete a large project for the employer.

The AESC course offerings include a combination of academic and applied Continuing Studies courses. The

learning outcomes associated with the AESC include: (1) academic breadth and depth, (2) analytical, critical, and

creative thought, (3) liberality, inclusiveness and an appreciation of diversity, (4) personal growth, leadership skills

and effective communication, (5) engaged citizenship from the local to the global level and (6) lifelong learning and

intellectual development.

the main campus. Each student will have access to: a kitchen, common area and their own bedroom. Each

student is required to bring their own bedding and pillows. Additional residence amenities include: study

lounges, common lounges, laundry facilities and parking. Students will be responsible for the cost of parking

and the $250 housing damage deposit.
