Presidency Guide
Historical Tidbits
George Washington established many of the precedents and defined the presidency for future US Presidents.
Franklin D. Roosevelt broke his two-term precedent because of the enormous problems of the Great Depression and
World War II. Grover Cleveland was the only President to serve nonconsecutive terms. William H. Harrison was
the first President to die in office. Zachary Taylor, Warren G. Harding, and FDR also died while in office.
Abraham Lincoln was the first President to be assassinated while in office and James A. Garfield, William
McKinley, and John F. Kennedy were also assassinated while in office. William H. Harrison served the shortest
time in office just over 30 days. His Vice President John Tyler became the first VP to assume the presidency upon a President’s death. John Adams was the first VP to be elected President. He served as George Washington’s VP.
Gerald R. Ford was the only President from Michigan and was the only President to serve as President that was never
elected President or VP. He assumed the presidency after the resignation of Richard M. Nixon following the Watergate Scandal. Richard M. Nixon was the only President to resign the presidency. He was avoiding the impeachment from the House of Reps. Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson were the only Presidents to be impeached.
Andrew Johnson was one vote away in the Senate from being removed from the presidency. Theodore Roosevelt
was the youngest President when he assumed the presidency after William McKinley’s assassination. John F.
Kennedy was the only Roman Catholic President and the youngest President elected while Ronald Regan was the
oldest person elected President. Four of the first five Presidents were elected from Virginia (Washington, Jefferson,
Madison and Monroe). John Adams and John Quincy Adams were the first father and son to serve as President.
George Bush and George W. Bush are the second father and son to serve as President. The only President to never
marry or to be a bachelor was James Buchanan. There have been several different political parties in the US throughout its history, however, the only political parties to have Presidents serve were the: Federalists, Whigs, Democrats, Democratic-Republicans, and Republicans. The only President to serve as a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was William H. Taft. Wars have shaped this nations history. The Commanders-in-Chief during World War II was FDR and Harry STruman and during the Vietnam War was Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard M. Nixon. Several Presidents had high-ranking military careers including: Washington, Andrew Jackson, W.H. Harrison,
Taylor, U.S. Grant, James A. Garfield, and Dwight Eisenhower. Herbert Hoover had the distinction of being
President at the onset of the Great Depression and FDR helped to guide the US out of it after the 1932 election. In the elections of: 1824, 1876, 1888 and 2000 the winners of the Electoral College lost the popular vote. Barack Obama is the first African American elected to the presidency.
The office of the President of the United States of America
The 25th Amendment (1967) clearly defined the Presidential Line of Successionand the 22nd (1951) limited the number of terms that a President could serve to two.
The benefits of the presidency are: a salary, expense account, White House, domestic staff, medical, health, and dental care free of charge, use of Air Force I, a retirement pension, and secret service protection for the rest of their life.
The Electoral College and not the popular vote elect the President. The Founders believed that the people were not educated enough to elect their leader. States have electoral votes and that number is determined by the number of US Senators and US Representatives that a state has in the US Congress. The House of Representatives pick when there is not a majority in the Electoral College the winner.
The President’s main job is to enforce the laws of the United States. Besides enforcing laws the President’s other duties include: Command-in-Chief of the armed forces, appoints department secretaries, ambassadors, Supreme Court Justices, makes treaties with other nations, pardons, delivers the State of the Union address to Congress, can call Congress into special sessions, meets with heads of state, commissions military officers, and ensures that the laws Congress passes are faithfully executed.
The following are limits on Presidential leadership: Congress, Federal courts, the Bureaucracy, and Public Opinion.
Informal Sources of Power are: ideas and actions of past Presidents, Congress, and Use of Mass Media.
