ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY! Every year we publish a 12month reli- gious calendar for our parishioners. These calendars are offered free of charge, due to the continued support of businesses with ties to the parish.

We print approximately 800 calendars to be distributed during the Christmas sea- son and they go fast! Underwriters share half the bottom portion of the calendar with the parish and this section is visible yearround. Many local businesses have supported us over the years. We want to thank past sponsors, Longo Ortho- dontics, parishioner Meghann Longo Dietz, Golf Tec, parishioner, James Kin- ney, Barbara J. Ries, Orthodontics, parishioner, Barbara Ries, and Abante Marketing, parishioner Jerry Morrissey for their patronage.

If you have a business or organization that would like to underwrite our 2020 cal- endar, please contact TJ Ernst at 4024522241 or by email at ernstt@svdpomaha.org.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Due to many people taking summer vacations we are in need of substitutes for adoration! Please consider joining our sub list and fill in for those devoted weekly adorers when they cannot attend their hour. We also have two open hours with no adorers: Saturday, 12:00am &

4:00am. Contact Dede Salerno: salerno@cox.net if interested.

A M ESSAGE FROM F R . D AN

Do you know someone who would like to become a Cath- olic? If you know someone interested in joining the Catholic Church, please let them know we would be happy to visit with them.

To become a Catholic Church member is a very im- portant personal decision. Being able to live out our faith relationship with God in a church community helps a person in many ways. Frequently I visit with someone who has been looking for the right church to grow closer to God. They often have a desire to worship with other peo- ple who share common beliefs and values. They want to be part of a community.

Sometimes the decision to become a Catholic is related to the personal situa- tion in their marriage or family experience. They may be engaged to a Catholic and want to share in a common faith experience in their marriage. They may be married to a Catholic and want to have a common faith for their family, especially if they have children. It may be that they are single and are looking for a founda- tion for their life. We respect how there is a different story for each person who is seeking God in his/her life.

We have a process called the RCIA, which stands for the Rite of Christian Initia- tion for Adults, which prepares people to learn about Catholic teachings, beliefs, practices and values. It is an experience of Catholic life which enables people, who are not baptized, or have been members of another Christian Church, to discover how Catholic life would be for them. It is a decisionmaking experience where they are invited to search in their hearts and with the RCIA team if they feel com- fortable in becoming a Catholic.

Some people assume RCIA is only about teachings of the Church. Teachings are an essential basis for the process, but there is much more in integrating faith with prayer, table discussion, and a chance for plenty of questions in the large group. It is meant to be a lifechanging experience coming to know God in a deep- er way and growing more comfortable with the Catholic way of living out our faith.

The RCIA process begins on Thursday, September 5. The sessions are held regularly on Thursday evenings starting at 7:00. John and Kathy Gentry lead our RCIA Team. We also invite sponsors for those attending RCIA; they can either be family members, spouses or fiancees, or friends. We ask the sponsors to attend each of the sessions. Being a sponsor is a significant commitment. It seems the sponsors often are renewed as much as their candidates with growth in their Catho- lic faith.

Once you experience the RCIA process, your life is changed. You discover a deeper relationship with God and you come to know people in a faith community, who want to grow in faith as well. If you have questions, you can contact the par- ish office at 4024967988 or email John & Kathy Gentry at: jkgentry@cox.net

A note from Hannah Keisling ±

Summer recap…This summer we have done a variety of things with teens. We had soccer nights with our seminarian, Paul Floersch; Sum- mer teen nights with witness talks given by teens and adult leaders; a water fun night at Edge for incoming 7th and 8th graders; and a Steubenville youth conference with 5,000 of our close friends. As we look back on all of these events, I have to thank our dedicated adults and teens who made a choice to go “all in” and make these things hap- pen. God has been calling out people from this parish to step out in faith and spread his GOOD NEWS! And it starts with invitation. A few of our senior high teens called hundreds of 7th and 8th graders just last week to invite them to Edge. And that simple invitation makes all the difference. Please pray for open hearts as we build a culture of invita- tion with our young people!

S TEWARDSHIP

Today’s readings come as a pat on the back from Heaven for all of us striving to live a stewardship way of life. They remind us why we live the way we do, make the choices we make, and leave oth- er things aside. Let’s face it, if we truly embrace this way of life, there will be people who find our choices downright foolish. Today we will see what God thinks.

To many people in our materialistic world, set- ting priorities that are not focused on earthly goals like wealth, status and power, is foolish and naive. But look at what Jesus has to say about priorities in the Gospel passage from Luke. He makes it clear that life is not about “stuff.” “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of posses- sions.”

In this passage, Jesus tells the parable of the wealthy businessman who thought he had every- thing figured out. The man had such an abun- dance of stuff that he didn’t have room to store it all. So, thinking of earthly things and not on what is above, he decided to build a bigger place to store all that stuff. Patting himself on the back, he thought about what good times he would have in the years ahead. But, Jesus tells us that day would turn out to be the man’s last day on the earth. And he had spent it thinking only of him- self. How foolish! What vanity of vanities!

Don’t be ashamed of living differently from the people around you. Be confident as you set prior- ities based on what is above. You are wise in God’s eyes, Christian steward. And you will be rich in what matters most.

CLOTHING DONATIONS LEFT AT THE PARISH²We often find bags of clothing/household items in the parish of- fice/church area. We ask that you please take the clothing/household items to oth- er agencies who can use them. The Divine Mercy Center & Pantry will only stock non- perishable food items and limited toiletry items. You can find thrift store locations with a website search. Our SVdP Society does hold clothing drives during the year.

The next clothing drive is scheduled for the end of Oct. More details will be provided closer to the collection. Thanks for your cooperation.

AUGUST THE MERCHANT OF VENICE BY WILLIAM SHAKE- SPEARE

Catholic Book Club every Monday in August from 7:00 to 8:00pm in the Family Room

The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeareis probably the most con- troversial of all Shakespeare's plays. It is also one of the least understood. Is it a comedy or a tragedy? What is the meaning behind the test of the caskets?

Who is the real villain of the trial sce- ne? Is Shylock simply vicious and ven- omous, or is he more sinned against than sinning? Can the play be de- scribed as antiSemitic? What exactly is the quality of mercy? Is Portia one of the great Christian heroines of west- ern literature? And what of the comedy of the rings with which Shakespeare ends the play? These questions and many others are answered in this criti- cal edition of one of the Bard's liveliest plays.
