Dipali Mehakarkar

MIT School of Education (B.Ed.), Kothrud, Pune 38, Maharashtra, India ---

The world is at the age of information explosion. Today’s society is the knowledge based society. Hence now everybody is trying to acquire more knowledge by each possible ways, whether it is through formal education system or by non-formal education system.

ICT enabled teaching learning process encompasses a variety of resources, tools and technologies aimed at improving the quality and effectiveness of the teaching-learning process. There are a variety of resources like projects, multimedia self learning modules which enhance the understanding of students and transformed convectional classrooms into the SMART CLASSROOM.

--- A] INTRODUCTION:

“The supply of teaching aids to every school is essential for the important of the quality of teaching. It would indeed bring about an education revaluation in the country”

---Kothari Commission (1964-66)

As per Kothari Commission’s (1964-66) opening statement, “Destiny of India is being shaped through classroom”. Formal education refers to education taken by attending the classroom and non-formal education refers to the education in setting other than classrooms. Some modes of non-formal education such as correspondences education, distance education and open learning are already popular; others, like teleconferencing are in the experimental stage.

Developments in educational technology have made it possible to adopt non- formal modes with great effectiveness.

B] DISTANCE EDUCATION

Globalization has caused a paradigm shift in various concept of education. Education which was considered a service has a now become business. The rapid development in science and technology and the challenges of globalization are posing additional challenges to the education system in the country. Education system needs to keep pace with the scientific and technological developments in terms of building skills and knowledge.

Distance learning is at the turning point, in the scale of its use, in how it operates, and in what it is used for. In the last few years it has change beyond recognition. Student’s attitudes too have changed. Distance learning is no longer the last choice for the excluded but has instead gained and important place in national and international plans for educational development. As 1986’s policy on education stressed the importance of opening of the new National Open Universities and of distance education. Other countries have similarly recognized distance

ICT brings reforms in various fields; one of them is distance education.

With the support of ICT flexibility, accessibility and openness are becomes qualities of distance education, and that’s why it is gaining very much popularity. New delivery strategies enabled and supported by new technologies, are changing the face of the distance education. As open and distance education becomes more flexible, accessible and interactive, its interest as tool for lifelong learning also increases.

C] ICT IN TEACHING-LEARNING OF DISTANCE EDUCATION Information and communication technology [ICT] is use of technology in managing and processing information. ICT can be defined as the, “diverse set of technological tools and resources used to communicate and to create, disseminate store and manage information.” These technologies include computers, the internet, broadcasting technologies [Radio and TV] and telephone. [UNDP 2000].

The world is changing at a fast speed. Reason behind this is ICT .It provides fast access to reliable information “Any time anywhere.”

Distance education means, completing education through correspondence. It is comprehensive method of non-formal education.

Distance education is one type of non- formal education, where teaching and learning is supported by a number of technical alternatives, such as:

2) A set of books, references and journals 3) CD’s or visual material

4) Video and audio programs with text 5) Radio and television broadcast 6) Multimedia

7) E-learning

Distance education is, therefore, anyone or combination of various forms of study other the continuous and immediate supervision of teachers in classroom situations. Lessons from educational psychology and theories of learning are employed in the design and development of instruction.

Planning, preparing, tutoring, guidance and counseling and development of learning are done with due regard to the latest developments in instructional design.

D] SUPPORT OF ICT IN REFORMING DISTANCE EDUCATION Before last few decades postal correspondence is the main means of communication in distance education, but now a day due to the development of technology, in distance education, self learning materials is supplemented and complemented by multimedia components in the form of radio, television, broadcasts, audio-visual cassettes, etc. with the use of satellite the open universities are able to provide teleconferencing and computer conferencing to bring interactivity in their teaching-learning process.

ICT enabled teaching learning process encompasses a variety of resources, tools and technologies aimed at improving the quality and effectiveness of the teaching-learning process. There are a variety of resources like projects, multimedia self learning modules which enhance the understanding of students. For this, the transformations of convectional classrooms have to be transformed into SMART CLASSROOM.

ICT and Multimedia supports teaching learning process in distance education in the following ways:

material can be accessed at ‘any time anywhere’, without any postal delay.

2) Openness study material: - There are various computer aided tools, by using it teaching learning process becomes open and easier which makes it user friendly.

3) Audio-visual appearance Some: - Some subjects which are very difficult to teach by using printed material, that can be easily explain by using ICT in terms of audio-visual presentations.

4) Coherent system for trainer: - ICT offers the course designer a coherent and integrated teaching system.

5) Coherent learning stimuli for learner: - ICT provides the learner a rich, varied and coherent combination of learning stimuli.

6) Individual learning style: - It offers learners an opportunity to use media suitable to individual learning styles and preferences.

7) Flexibility: - Audio serves better those students, who prefer listening to reading, video serves better those, who prefer visual learning, thus ICT support gives flexibility in learning.

Effective learning: - Computer-mediated communication becomes a valuable tool for those, who learn effectively by reading and then writing, especially when the subject content requires great deal of thought and reflection.

E] CONCLUSION

ICT tools in distance education offer a new hope for equality of opportunity and accessibility of education to the ever increasing numbers of teenagers, adolescent and adult learners. Different professional trainings to adjust to new job requirements with advances in electronics, computerization, etc. is possible only by distance education and imparting of knowledge in distance education is possible only through means of multimedia. Hence with support of ICT new frontiers in education technology may lead to yet newer system of distance education for coming generation.
