Reading Time

Tony was very disappointed last night. All the other students in his class went to a party at their adviser's house, but he never got there. He followed his adviser's directions, but he made one little mistake.

From their school, he walked along Main Street to Central Avenue two blocks to the bus stop at the corner, across from the post office. He took the Central Avenue bus and got off at Fifth Street. He turned left and walked along Fifth street

three blocks to Park Avenue and turned right. He walked up Park Avenue one block to the bus stop at the corner of Park Avenue and Sixth Street.

He took Bus #42, but he got off at the wrong stop. He got off at River Road instead of Rolling Road. He turned left and walked along River Road one block. He turned left again and walked two blocks, turned right, and completely got lost.

Tony was veyr. He really wanted to go to the party last night, and he can't believe he made such a terrible mistake.

Giving Directions

If you’re in a new town or city and you want to know where a place

or building is, these are useful phrases for asking directions. There are also phrases for giving directions to other people who ask you for help.

How you can ask for directions.

Say "Excuse me" before you ask a person. To make it sound like a question, make your voice go up on "me".

"Excuse me. How do I get to (the railway station) please?"

Giving directions

The person who helps you often says how near or far the place is:

"It's about five minutes from here."

Specific instructions

Here are some useful words and phrases for giving directions on the street. Maybe you're helping a driver, or someone who stops you to ask for directions.

• "Turn left/right/"

• "Go straight on at the lights/when you come to the crossroads." (Lights = traffic lights: crossroads = where two roads cross).

• "Go across the roundabout/" (Roundabout = where all the cars go round a circle in the middle of the road).

"Take the first turning/road/street on your left/right/" (Turning = road that goes left or right)
