How We Measure Education in America

• Three different surveys combine for a fuller picture of education in America:

• American Community Survey (ACS)

• Current Population Survey (CPS)

• Survey of Income and Program

Participation (SIPP)

American Community Survey

Collected Since: 2005 for all geographic areas

Sample: Currently 3.4 million households annually

Geographies: Past year’s data available annually for geos of 65,000 or more;

Past 3 year’s data available annually for geos of 20,000 or more;

Past 5 year’s data available annually for geos as small as census block groups

Education Questions:

1. Enrollment in school in the past 3 months 2. Highest degree or level of school completed 3. Field of bachelor’s degree

Note: Wide-ranging survey allows cross-tabulation by race, ethnicity, income, language and more

Sample: About 100,000 households in Annual Social and Economic Supplement (ASEC); Annual School Enrollment Supplement
