(2)

• Have you ever been to a family reunion?

• Have you ever had your whole family get together for something? • Maybe a wedding or a party?

• Usually getting your whole family together is a great thing and you have a lot of fun. • Can you recall a get-together where people were not happy to see each other?

• Our story today tells of a family reunion when the people in it weren’t so sure if it would be fun or not!

Word Time: Genesis 32:22-28 and 35:9-15

[10 min]

You will need: 1. Bible

2. Video Clip

Genesis 32:22-28

22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. 24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

27 The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered.

28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,[f] because you have struggled with

God and with humans and have overcome.”

Genesis 35:9-15

9 After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him. 10 God said to him, “Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will

be Israel.” So he named him Israel.

11 And God said to him, “I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a

community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants.

12 The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your

descendants after you.

13 Then God went up from him at the place where he had talked with him.

14 Jacob set up a stone pillar at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a

drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it.

15 Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.

God Told Jacob to Return Home

Rebekah counselled Jacob to pretend to be Esau, in order to obtain the blessing from his father. He dressed himself in Esau's best clothes and disguised himself by covering his arms in lamb skin so that if his blind father touched him, he would think Jacob was Esau. Jacob had run away from his home when Esau was so mad at him for tricking him. He had gone to live with his Uncle Laban. While he was there, he married Leah and Rachel and they had many sons. Laban promised his younger daughter Rachel to Jacob in return for seven years' service, only to trick him into marrying his elder daughter Leah instead. Jacob then served another seven years in exchange for the right to marry his choice, Rachel, as well.God told Jacob that it was time for him to go back home. God said “Go back to the land of your

Jacob had to Face Esau Again

But you know what that meant! It meant that Jacob had to face Esau again! Uh oh… Jacob had run away from Esau. Esau had been very angry with Jacob! Esau sold his birth right for a bowl of soup. Jacob tricked Esau out of his blessing. It had been a lot of years… but Jacob figured that Esau might be really angry!

Jacob was Worried, but He Obeyed God

Jacob was really worried!

• How would you feel if you had to go and talk to someone who had been really mad at you?

(Wait for answers.)

• Yes, meeting up with someone who has been upset with you can cause you to worry. But Jacob knew that God had told him to go back, and so he made plans to return to the land of his fathers. Jacob knew that God had promised to be with him, and to bless him… Jacob knew that God always keeps His promises!

Jacob Wrestled “with God and Man” and Overcame

So Jacob and his family started back home. Jacob sent messengers and lots of presents ahead to Esau. But as they all got closer to home, Jacob got worried again! The night before he was to meet Esau, he sent all of his family and possessions across the river ahead of him. Then Jacob was left alone in the night and he wrestled with God. The Bible says, “..a man wrestled with him until daybreak.”

Jacob got a New Name: Israel

As morning came, the man told Jacob to release him. Jacob said he would not let him go unless he blessed him. The man asked Jacob his name.

• What do you think Jacob said? (Yes! He said his name was Jacob!)

Then the man said “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God

and with men and have overcome.” (Israel means “he struggles with God”.)

God was with Israel

Jacob (now called Israel) went across the river and met his brother Esau again. And, you know what… Esau was glad to see him! God kept His promise to be with Jacob and to bless him! God always keeps His promises!

Ask the children the following questions:

1. Why was Jacob scared to return home? (He tricked his brother Esau into giving him his birth right and blessing)

2. What is the promise that God made to Jacob? (“Go back to the land of your fathers and to your

relatives, and I will be with you.”)

3. How was Jacob tricked by his uncle Laban? (Laban promised his younger daughter Rachel to Jacob in return for seven years' service, only to trick him into marrying his elder daughter Leah instead. Jacob then served another seven years in exchange for the right to marry his choice, Rachel, as well.)

4. What was Jacob’s new name? (Israel)

5. Why was Jacob given this name? (“Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you

have struggled with God and with men and have overcome.” - Israel means “he struggles with

God's Story: Jacob Wrestles

Wrestle Mania:

[5 min]

You will need: 1. Nothing

• Tell your kids that you and they (or they and their siblings) are going to have a wrestling match to see who is the strongest!

• Remind them how Jacob wrestled with the man before he met up with Esau.

• Instead of having a full-on wrestling match they are going to arm wrestle to see who is the strongest.

• Set up a low table where the match can take place.

• Take turns to arm wrestle each other, trying to stay in the match as long as possible. • Imagine having to arm wrestle someone that is as strong as you for the whole day or night! • The loser must tell the winner: “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel.”

Object lesson: God’s Power

[5 min]

You will need: 1. Ice Cubes

2. Straw

3. Paper towels 4. Hair dryer 5. Salt

• In today’s lesson, Jacob spent an entire night wrestling with an angel of God. • After an entire night of wrestling, God’s angel told Jacob to walk away. • Jacob left the wrestling match with a new name and a limp from his hurt hip. • We sometimes struggle with God, too.

• We may want to do things our way instead of His way. • When is it hard for you to obey God? (Allow responses)

Instructions:

• Give each child a paper towel. • Explain that they’re in charge now.

• They’ll have to choose how they think they can most quickly melt an ice cube.

• They can use a straw to blow hot air on it, sprinkle salt on it, or hold in to try to melt it. • Pass around the supplies so kids can choose then distribute the ice cubes.

• Give kids one minute to try melt their cube using their chosen method. • Meanwhile, turn on the hair dryer and blow hot air on your ice cube. • Call time and compare everyone’s efforts.

• How did your way compare to my way of melting ice cubes? • Why was my way more effective?

• My ice cube melted faster because I had more power. • And with God’s power, we can do greater things.

(5)

• We can stop doing things our way.

• We can surrender to God’s will and trust that He knows best.

Prayer Time:

[5 min]

You will need: 1. Nothing

The Closing Prayer is extremely important. Not only does it signal that the lesson has ended, but it also gives you the opportunity to reinforce the lesson and share what was taught one more time. The children will know the lesson has real life application and meaning when it becomes part of the closing prayer. The closing prayer should be brief. Remember, the children are probably anxious to go on to the next phase of their day, and will not likely keep still to hear a long closing prayer.

The Closing Prayer should always include the following:

1. Praise God for the opportunity to be able to hear His Word and learn from it today. 2. Application of the Lesson:

Dear God,

Thank you that you always keep your promises! Thank you that you were with Jacob.

Thank you that you are with us! Thank you for loving us!

We love you back! Amen.
