!

There is a lot of talk in the wine world these days about “natural”

winemaking, a term which seems to mean different things to different

people. At Ridge, we felt from the beginning that these modern,

increasingly industrial, wines lacked the complexity, the sense of

place, and the ability to age and develop that the pre-industrial wines

demonstrated. So we looked back to the 19th Century – to techniques

used in the first and finest California wineries.

Eight Years

in the Desert

by Orin Swift

After eight years away from Zinfandel, Dave Phinney returns to the grape that put Orin Swift on the map twenty years ago. Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Syrah expertly blended into a single big, brawny package. Dark fruit predominates with hints of charred meat and espresso. Each bottle is hand labled in mixed media, and is a collector's item in itself.

~ The word “brandy” is derived from the Dutch work “brandewijn” which means “burnt wine” ~ An alembic is an ancient alchemical still (two connected vessels) used for distillation

~ Nowadays, the alembic method is commonly known as copper pot-stills ~ Ancient art of alembic distillation can be traced back 3,000 BC in China
