From the Pastor’s Pen
As we journey through the month of June, we realize summer (and the heat & humidity) are upon us. We welcome all who are returning to the Eucharist each and every weekend. It's great to see families returning to Mass, and we pray our community can continue to grow and carry out God's good among us.
Also, we are so very grateful to all who are such good and faith-ful stewards of God's gifts, and as we come to the close of our fiscal year (June 30), we are so grateful for all who have been so very generous to our St. James parish. We have been able to help families in need over this past year and to continue all our ministries. For this we are so thankful!
We welcome back our Altar Servers next weekend, and are grateful to these young men and women who serve us on the altar each and every weekend.
A reminder of our Knights of Columbus "Drive thru" Curbside Pulled Pork Sandwich meal next weekend. Again, we are grateful to the K of C, as well as the Altar Society, and all our ministries that serve the needs of our parish community. A special congratulations to St. Pius X on their state champion-ship in Class 3 Baseball, and to Liberty High School for their capture in the Class 6 Baseball state championships. Con-gratulations to these young men in their tremendous effort. And we're also grateful to all our young people who are in the midst of transitions in their lives. May they trust always in the guidance of God's Spirit!
Don't forget the opportunity for a great Catholic education here at St. James School. We are so proud of our faculty and staff for having a tremendous year in the midst of the pandemic. You are most welcome to tour our school or give them a call if you want more information. We have openings for the Fall semester, so we invite you to consider the gift of a fabulous Catholic education environment for your families.
May you and your families continue to know God's Grace and Love in your lives.
Peace, Fr. Mike

Someone is Watching and Wondering
From my earliest memo-ries, music has been a part of my life. Our home was filled with music, there was singing each day at my elementary school, and of course there were hymns at church. Before I could read the words in our hymnals, however, I was learning and singing the words to many songs taught in my Sunday School classes. Al-though I do not remember all the words anymore (I still remember many tunes) there was one song about count-ing our blesscount-ings, similar to the words found above. I also have vivid memories being asked to name my bless-ings. I suppose it is from these early childhood experi-ences that I try to begin and end each day thanking God for my blessings.
The word blessing is defined as “the act or words of a person who blesses; a special favor, mercy, or benefit.” In the United States we are blessed with liberty, free-doms, justice, etc. Christians speak of blessings from God as graces or gifts. Yet I find Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s words more precise and comforting: “A blessing is the visible, perceptible, effective proximity of God. A bless-ing demands to be passed on – it communicates itself to other people. To be blessed is to be oneself a blessing.” Bonhoeffer’s words have indeed changed my under-standing as well as my ability to perceive the difference between a simple gift and a blessing from God. I also realize that Bonhoeffer’s words reflect Jesus’ words after washing the disciples feet (John 14): “as I have done for you, you should also do. . .as I have loved you, so also you should love one another. . .whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love [them] and we will come. . .and dwell within [them].” I have finally come to understand that my authentic blessings are a call to embrace the presence of God dwelling within me. This blessing cannot be hoarded or contained, I must share it with others. Share what? you may ask. Share God’s love, God’s inexplicable nearness, God’s unfailing, un-earned mercy and forgiveness; God’s will for our joy, well being, and inner peace; sharing God’s tenderness and care. I cannot receive a blessing without becoming a blessing. God is love, let me become love.
In chapter 6 of the book of Numbers, the Lord gave Moses this priestly blessing: “The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace!” I think the world could become a better place if we each took these words to heart and they became the blessing we pass to one another. May I offer these words of priestly blessing to you today.

A Message From Fr. Mike
Dear St James Families:
As we return to worshipping together again, we have an opportunity to get to know each other better
after having been apart for so long! We are very excited to announce that we will be partnering with
Universal Church Directories Photography to create an updated St James pictorial directory.
Photographers from Universal Church Directories will be taking family pictures in the Parish Social
Hall on the following dates:
• July 19th through July 24th
• August 9th through August 14th
• August 16th and August 17th
We will have more details in the bulletin and on our website beginning June 26. Each family will
re-ceive a complimentary 8 x 10 portrait as well as a copy of the completed directory for participating.
A pictorial directory is a great tool for us all to become better acquainted with those we see each
weekend.
We really hope that you and your family can be a part of the 2021 St James directory —let’s put a
name to each other’s faces and celebrate the great spirit in our St James community!!

Inquiry Phase Begins
for Next Diaconate Class
Men, have you ever considered a new way to serve God and the Church? Has the Holy Spirit touched your heart to consider a vocation as a deacon? Wives, do you see the gifts of ordained minis-try in your husband and in your marriage?
The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph is beginning its inquiry phase for those men who are interested in a possible vocation to the diaconate. The Office of the Diaconate will be providing information and dis-cernment sessions throughout the diocese in 2021, with the intention of beginning the next deacon for-mation class in January / February 2022.
The formation period is a time of discernment. If you would like to find out more information about serving the church as a deacon, please visit the Di-ocesan Website at
https://kcsjcatholic.org/office/office-of-the-diaconate/
where you can view requirements and fill out an on-line inquiry form. Once completed, one of the Dea-con Directors will reach out to you and answer your questions. Or, if you prefer, you may call the Di-aconate Office at (816) 714-2302.
The generosity of our St. James parish is sending 12 of our teens to the Steubenville youth conference in July.
We appreciate the donations and prayers for this trip.
