REFLECTING ON THE WORD

Imagine that you are a seagull casually flying in from the Mediterranean, hovering for a spell above the Jor-dan River. It is a beautifully hot day and the wind floats you aloft. All is good. All is peaceful.

Suddenly the heavens open. Power fills the sky. You can feel the air vibrate. The Spirit breaks in. A dove de-scends. The God of glory thunder, the voice of the Lord over the waters: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

You’re knocked off guard, for you haven’t seen pictures of a furry man pouring water over a guy with his head bowed, a little bird fluttering overhead; you haven’t heard this baptism of Jesus story before. The Spirit of God is not like any other dove that you have ever seen. This is not like any other day. What is going on?

Below you, people walk with their heads bowed, trudging in the dirt, tired by their humdrum experience. You want to caw out, “LooooK, looook, looook! Come and soar with me! The Spirit of God is here!” The voice of the Lord is power. The voice of the Lord is splendor. You are roused with courage, feeling that you could keep flying even through the worst of thunderstorms.

Who are these two men? One stays by the water. The other turns toward the desert, where he will remain for forty days. The dove disappears to lead the man to the desert, that power remains with the man who walks away. Wherever he stops, you want to stop. Life is richer in his presence. The air still vibrates. The splendor has not gone away. Something just feels fitting and right and abundant. What was crooked is not straight. All is good. All is warm. God is here! John R. Barker OFM * Karla J. Bellinger Well, we’re off and running right into the new

year. Do you remember what many Catholic school students wrote on the top of every work paper we cranked out: A.M.D.G. standing for St. Ignatius’s motto “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam”, translated To the greater glory of God! We were called to do everything for the glory of God and so do everything well and with excellence. I think we can begin this new year with that same spirit, beginning 2021 with the inscription AMDG. We strive for excellence in our words and deeds during this new year. Otherwise you and I are not building the Kingdom of God in our home and in our world. We commit ourselves to a spirit of excellence….The bad weather notwith-standing, our parish celebration of Christmas held many memories. Cassie, Leslie and Kathey, and the Children’s Choir led us into the parish celebration of Christmas. Then came the snow. Our 6:00pm and Midnight were affected a lot by the weather. We did our best on Christmas day. Hopefully we tried to make the feast everything we could considering the circumstances...We move into January’s Generations of Faith this Sunday. Our theme for January is “Option for the Poor and Vulnerable”. This is an aspect of Catholic social teaching that we are engaged in all through the year through our outreach to St. Vincent de Paul in Warren and the projects of our Samaritan Society. Before Christmas we also had an army of families delivering gifts to our parish shut-ins. These people find themselves poor in companionship and poor in contact with

the rest of the parish community. We have re-ceived many responses from the shut-ins thank-ing those who reached out to them...Did you know that there is a group in the Catholic church called the Order of Penitents? It is a counter cultural lay religious Third Order way of life open to us all. It involved daily prayer and conversion. Members live according or the rule of life of St. Francis of Assisi. The group meets in local groups or on the internet. Visit www.penitents.org or call Mariah Dragolich at 260-739-6882 for more information...The caril-lon (Bells) at St. Lucy has been silent for at least a month. We sent it back to Verdin Company in Cincinnati as it is still under warranty. We hope it will be back and filling the air with a sign of the parish presence at 16280 East High St. One of the newer members at Casa Lucia called and registered her pleasure with the silence and ask-ing that the bells be turned off. I could not say

NO strongly enough. We need to hear the

com-forting reminder of God’s presence not just in our church, but throughout the neighborhood. The blessing of bells calls for the devil to be driv-en far from wherever bells are heard. What a prayer. May it soon continue!

ROSE HALL AND WINCA HALL RENTALS: CALL THE OFFICE 548-3812 Living and Praying with

THE WORD

O, Jesus, give us a heart for you. Spirit of God, fill us to the max! Help us to soar and to dance above the humdrum of life, to be empowered anew. You have done something fresh. Break into our lives as well. Thank you for your glory!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Valentine’s cards have ap-peared at the shopping mall, but in the Church it is still Christmas. Today’s feast spun off from Epiphany. Originally, a blessing of holy water was an important feature of the Epiph-any feast, and in the Greek Church, this was a day for leaping into the sea in grateful recollection of baptism. The gratitude may not be quite as profound among the Orthodox Christians who have to chop holes in the ice to plunge into the waters!

Still, there are few better days to celebrate a baptism, and to plunge our hands into the waters of the font. Jesus found the waters of the Jordan irresistible because of what had been done in those wa-ters: people had confessed their sins, and had acknowl-edged their need to be forgiv-en and healed. Today, we are the people in the water, and Christ comes to be with us. You won’t have to chop a hole in the ice to celebrate your baptism. A beautiful bowl of water on the table tonight, a toast with sparkling water at dinner, or even a leap into the shower with a sign of the cross and a prayer of thanksgiving will suffice!

“IT’S A MATTER OF LIFE...”

Amnesty International, just one of numerous organizations we might not think to be among those who are a “clanging bell” extolling society’s support of abortion, defines it as follows: “An abortion is a medical procedure that ends a pregnancy. It is a basic healthcare need for millions of women, girls and oth-ers who can become pregnant” (whom ever that may be). Christians must not be deceived by these words. It is a definition straight from the pit of

hell. Then, what is abortion? Abortion is a mother killing her child, a doctor killing his patient, and, sadly, a world turning its back. Abortion kills a unique human being. There will never be another person like the one the abortionist murdered.
