CCGMS January 2017 Meeting

January 10th at 7:30 pm

516 W. Atlanta St., Marietta, GA 30060

Our January presentation will be

“Collecting Fossils in the Cretaceous.”

The program will cover many fossil

sites on both sides of the pond, from

Appalachia to Laramidia (that’s Georgia

to Wyoming in present terms). Our

speaker, David Braswell, will share

photographs and information on the

lo-cations and fossils he has collected

over the last several years through club

trips and private collecting opportunities. He’ll also share tips on collecting

and preserving fossils, and resources to assist in identifying and locating

Cretaceous fossils. Don’t miss this interesting talk!

GMS FIELD TRIP

Saturday, January 7, 2017

10:00 a.m. Eastern Time

Weiss Lake, AL

TRIP: GMS will hold a field trip to Weiss Lake, AL for various fossils.

COLLECTING: Limestone with unidentified markings, trilobites, and possibly

brooksellas.

BRING: Rock hammer, small sledge, chisel, buckets, and paper for wrapping

delicate specimens. You will also need gloves, protective eyewear, hat, sun-screen, and sturdy boots with ankle support (hiking boots). As always bring plenty of water and some snacks.

This field trip is suitable for children of all ages but we will be by a lake so

chil-dren are required to have adult supervision at all times. The terrain is

sta-ble along the shoreline, but climbing around rocks will be necessary to find and retrieve specimens which may be large and heavy at one location. The weather in January can be unpredictable, so be prepared for wintry conditions.

Parking is limited, so carpooling is highly recommended.

DIRECTIONS AND WHERE TO MEET:

McDonald’s,650 Cedar Bluff Road, Centre, AL 35960

1) I-75 North to Hwy 20 (exit 290) West towards Rome and into Alabama where the name of the road changes to Alabama SR 9.

President Ray Borders’ Message

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great holi-day season. We’re looking forward to a fantastic year at CCGMS. We have a lot of great volunteers who provide lapidary classes, open workshops, field trips, interesting meetings, an annual show, dinners and other events. A lot of people pitch in to help with everything from grab bags to bringing delicious food to our picnic and dinners.

We recently had a chance to buy a great collection of almost 1000 minerals, ranging from high end specimens to excellent quality and rare lower value pieces to interesting specimens. Since we needed to make a decision on buying the collec-tion before the next meeting, we emailed members to get their vote on buying the acquisition. We were pleased at the overwhelming positive re-sponse from a large majority of our membership to make the purchase. Thank you for your vote! Last Thursday we had a group of member volun-teers who helped pick up the collection. Once again it was our volunteers who made it possible for our club to benefit from this great opportunity. This collection will benefit our club through auc-tions, club use and other means. Thanks to every-one who helped. Working together is what makes our club great!

Volunteers Needed in 2017

The easiest way to get involved and meet people at CCGMS is to volunteer. Not only will you help the club, you will have a lot of fun!

HOSPITALITY CHAIR: We need a new hospitality chair or a team of members to provide delicious treats at our monthly meetings, and to help organize food for our Annual Picnic, Dealers Dinner and Christmas Dinner. If you’d like to volunteer please contact President Ray Borders at

[email protected], 770-312-5205 or talk to him at our January meeting.

ORGANIZE SEWING OF GRAB BAGS: If you sew, we need a volunteer to organize the sewing of the grab bags that we fill with rocks, minerals and fossils and sell at our Annual Show in November. This year we sold 1280 grab bags at the show and 200 to a teacher. Keith Johnson is cutting out the fabric to have it ready to sew for the 2017 grab bags. Help out! Volunteer to start sewing bags or to help or-ganize a group of members to sew the bags. We have thread available to sew the bags with. 2016 Christmas Dinner—December Minutes

On Tuesday, December 13th, the annual Christmas party commenced with the final opening gavel from President Paul Lessard who asked Greg Manley if he would please give the blessing before we ate an incredible feast.

After a delicious dinner prepared by all of us eaten on tables beautifully decorated, awards were given. Ginger Lessard, our hospi-tality chair, grab bag chair, and Junior Rockhound co-leader, was given the Unsung Hero Award. David Braswell was given the Rock-hound of the Year Award. Richard Cepurna was given the Volunteer of the Year Award for pitching in wherever and whenever he is needed. Life-time memberships were awarded to Lawrence and Shirley Parker and to Dion and Toby Stewart. Both couples give countless hours to the club, Lawrence and Shirley especially at the gem show, and Dion and Toby for the many field trips they sponsor and organize and especially the time they give to our classic monthly newsletter.

Then Parliamentarian Frank Tichenor swore in the board who will serve in 2017: President Ray Borders, Vice-President Bob Shively, Treasurer Wayne Dodd, Recording Secretary Lynn Avery, and Corresponding Secre-tary Donna Barrett. Immediately after, Frank became Santa Frank and organized the Christmas exchange where there were many oohs and aahs from the delights found in the packages.

After much fellowship, Paul then wished everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, closed the meeting, and handed the gavel to Ray. Thank you, Paul Lessard and Janie Bailey, for serving as our Presi-dent and Corresponding Secretary for the past three years.
