Von Balthasar on Prayer
Dear Epiphany,Consider this:
“Body and soul were created for the sake of daily obedience to God; this is the origin of the aura of nobility which clings to human nature. Humanity was created to be a hearer of the word, and it is in responding to the word that they attain their true dignity. Their innermost constitution has been designed for dialogue. Their reason is equipped with as much light of its own as it needs to apprehend God speaking to it. Their will is just that much superior to instinct and open to all that is good, that they are able, without compulsion, to follow the attraction of the most blessed good. They are the creatures with a mystery in their heart that is bigger than themselves. They are built like a tabernacle around a most sacred mystery” (PRAYER: Hans Urs von Balthasar, p. 22).
This reflection comes from a man I consider a spiritual mentor. Hans Urs von Balthasar was a Jesuit priest who left the order to engage the Kingdom of God from a different point of view. He lived a monastic type of life within a community called the Community of Saint John in Swit-zerland. And from his new station began to write volumes of theology, with his magnum opus being the seven volume series called The Glory of the Lord. I have the full set (given to me at ordination). But the book that most changed my life was a simple one, called Prayer. I’m going to return to it this summer as the center of my summer study life.
Two Sundays ago, I wondered out loud what it would be like to call 81,000 people to walk down the stairs to the silent depths of their souls. I received responses to that challenge, which inspired me to gather a community that seeks to do just that this fall. And so, for help defining what that going into our souls will look like for Epiphany Parish, I am returning to von Balthasar. If you are adventurous, I invite you to join me in reading this book. It’s not our summer reading― a book that will be announced in short order―but it is a readable theological tome that gives great clarity around Christianity. If you have questions about Christianity, read this book.
The quote above is about human nature, and why we were made. But this book also deals with issues of love, faith, our inner life with God, the foundation of God’s inner life, unity with Christ, biblical encounter, the promise of prayer, discipleship, the nature of our heart and our mind, and the reality of heaven and earth. It is a treasure trove of theological glory given through the wise mind of a prayerful man.
You remain in my prayers. Peace upon your soul.

The Lesson Genesis 3:8-15 They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze,
and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” He said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent tricked me, and I ate.” The Lord God said to the serpent,
“Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals and among all wild creatures; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.”

The people remain standing.
The Gospel Mark 3:20-35 GospelerThe Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.
People
Glory to you, Lord Christ.
The crowd came together again, so that Jesus and his disciples could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, “He has gone out of his mind.” And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.” And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered.
“Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— for they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.”
Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.” And he replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

Sermon The Reverend Doyt L. Conn, Jr.
Silence and stillness are kept after the sermon. The people stand to say
The Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
The Prayers of the People
The intercessor and people pray responsively.
Let us offer prayers for all our sisters and brothers in the church and the world who need justice, mercy, and reconciliation.
For the church of Jesus Christ throughout the world, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord have mercy.
For all who minister in Christ, and for all the people of God, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord have mercy.
For those chosen to govern peoples and nations, and for the welfare of their people, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord have mercy.
For all who struggle to establish greater peace upon earth, especially those who serve in the military, those on missions of hope and mercy, and their families,
let us pray to the Lord. Lord have mercy.
For all those in need, the suffering and the oppressed, those who are sick and hospitalized, especially Colin, Lynn, Ken, Amber, Carol, Libby, Alice, Bill, Phil, Patty, Cheryl, Susan, Trish, Marj, Atty, and for those suffering from COVID-19,
let us pray to the Lord. Lord have mercy.
For all who rest in the hope of the resurrection and for all the departed, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord have mercy.
For those on our hearts, offering praise and thanksgiving, intercession and solace, comfort and healing, for those we now name silently or aloud.
The people may add their own petitions.
Lord, let your loving-kindness be upon them; Who put their trust in you.
The Presider offers a Concluding Collect.
Loving God, who commands us to do what is right and good, hear the prayers we offer you this day that all peoples may approach your holy table in peace and unity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Confession of Sin
Presider Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. The people kneel. A moment of silence is kept.
Presider and people Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.
Presider Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People
It is right to give God thanks and praise.
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a new people in Jesus Christ our Lord, to show forth your glory in all the world.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
Sanctussung by all
Richard Proulx
The Presider continues
Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him.
Presider and people
Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.
Presider
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray, The Lord’s Prayer said by all
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread

“Education for Ministry (EfM) is a unique four-year distance learning certificate program in
theo-logical education based upon small-group study and practice. Since its founding in 1975, this
international program has assisted more than 95,000 participants in discovering and nurturing
their call to Christian service. EfM helps the faithful encounter the breadth and depth of the
Christian tradition and bring it into conversation with their experiences of the world as they
study, worship, and engage in theological reflection together” (from Sewanee: University of the
South’s website). Join other parishioners from Epiphany for study of the Bible, exploring the
his-tory of Christianity, learning about theology as it pertains to the Episcopal faith and many other
faith traditions, and deepening your own faith. This course meets weekly during the academic
year. If you have questions, would like to look at the material, or want to sign up, please contact

Men’s Fellowship at Epiphany
We are having a gathering of the men at Epiphany to encourage renewed fellowship and
deeper connections. We plan to meet monthly. All men at Epiphany are invited to attend
and to bring along friends from outside our church family. At each meeting we will serve
breakfast, pray, and invite a speaker to address the group. These talks will have a spiritual
component so that there is evidence of how the Lord is present and at work in our lives. We
are hopeful that, as the pandemic recedes from our daily lives, the men of Epiphany are open
and excited about this new beginning.
Charissa Bradstreet to Be Ordained to the Priesthood SAVE THE DATE
Dear Epiphany
It is with great enthusiasm that I announce to you the ordination of Charissa Bradstreet to take place on June 15 at 6:30 pm. I am still uncertain as to whether this will be Zoom or in person, probably a combination of both. Stay tuned, and put the date on your calendar, so you can join me in honoring and celebrating this extraordinary person who has been raised up for the priesthood by Epiphany Parish.
As you know, Charissa came to Epiphany about 13 years ago. She had finished a graduate program in theology at the Seattle School of Theology and Psychology, but then decided not to go ahead with ordination in the Presbyte-rian Church. She, instead, pursued her ministry through her work at the Gates foundation. But over time her per-spective shifted, and she found that her theology and patterns of worship and spiritual practices sat easily within the history and tradition of the Episcopal church. And so, she was called to ordination, which meant that these past few years she has been taking classes and doing Clinical Pastoral Education and passing her General Ordina-tion Examines. Now she is serving at Good Samaritan Episcopal Church in Sammamish as their curate. She will serve there a few years and then be released to the wider church, where she will continue to pursue her ministry. I’m so proud of her, and I’m so happy for the Episcopal church. Below is Charissa’s address if you want to write her a note of congratulations.

The Third Lesson
2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1
Just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture—“I believed, and so I spoke”—we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.
