It primarily uses power line wiring for signaling and control, where the signals involve brief radio frequency bursts representing digital information. Noise filtering as installed on computers as well as many modern appliances may help keep external noise out of X10 signals, but noise filters not designed for X10 may also attenuate X10 signals traveling on the branch circuit to which the appliance is connected.Typically, the capacitors used on the inputs to these power

supplies short the X10 signal from line to neutral, suppressing any hope of X10 control on the circuit near that device.

Filters are available that will block the X10 signals from ever reaching such devices; plugging offending devices into such filters can cure mysterious X10 intermittent failures.If two X10 signals are transmitted at the same time they may collide or interleave, leading to commands that either cannot be decoded or that trigger incorrect operations. The machine language program would require rework depending upon the speed of the systems clock the PET has a 1 megahertz clock and the number of cycles per instruction. Lights can be turned on and off, dimmed or brightened. Plugin appliances, television sets, and stereos can be turned on or off. No special wiring or complex installations are involved. The system is expandable by adding more modules, a cordless controller or other command consoles. The system is shown in photo 1 and photo 2. The components are The command console, the wall switch module, the appliance module, and the lamp module. A cordless controller not shown is available, but is not an integral part of the system being presented in this article. The components of one vendors system are interchangeable with those of another, with one very notable exception. There are two different types of command consoles one model X10014301 that can be remotely controlled with a hand held cordless controller, and one model that cannot. The command console that can be controlled by the hand held cordless controller is a requirement. The buyer should make certain that the BSR X10 system purchased includes this particular model. As with all the remote modules, it can be locally activated without the command console. Each remote module monitors these transmissions and responds only when its particular code is sent. The coded signals sent by the command console can be initiated by physically pressing a key on the console or by the receipt of a series of tone bursts in the proper sequence through the ultrasonic receiver section.

This series of tone bursts would typically be transmitted by the handheld cordless controller as a result of pressing one of its twentytwo keys. Its keyboard contains sixteen unit keys, numbered one through sixteen, each corresponding to the number set or dialed on the remote lamp, appliance, or wall switch module. The keyboard also contains six command keys labeled and defined as follows This action actually transmits two separate messages to the command console. Each of the twentytwo keys on the controller has a unique 5bit binary code see table 1. A single message is made up of a startofmessage SOM code, one 5bit binary code, the logical inversion of that 5bit binary code, and an end of message EOM code. One message is approximately 100 ms in length and is composed of thirteen segments. Each segment is 8 ms in length. The start of message segment consists of a 4 ms 40K hertz tone followed by a 4 ms period of silence. Each segment of the data 5bit binary code or inverted 5bit binary code consists of a 4 ms 40K hertz tone for a logic 1 or a 1.2 ms 40K hertz tone for a logic 0, followed by a silent period of the appropriate length. The end of message code consists of two 8 ms segments, each containing a 40K hertz tone for the complete duration. All messages use exactly the same format; only the 5bit binary data codes vary. There is no hazard in using the controller or any of the remote modules as long as their cases remain intact. The BSR X10 is Underwriters Laboratories listed. The PET must remain electrically isolated from the command console at all times. This is accomplished with communication in the form of ultrasonic sound transmitted through space by the transducer attached to the PETs user port. In essence, the PET software will simulate the activity of the handheld cordless controller. The cable between the transducer and the receptacle is typically shielded see photo 3.

When testing, various distances from the command module should be tried. Experience with several different transducers has shown that some failed to activate the console if positioned extremely close while others worked only in such a position. the data direction register E843 16 for VIA data output port A E84F 16 . PA0 is defined as an output line and PA1 through PA7, although not actually used, are defined as input lines. The remainder of the mainline routine is subdivided into segments containing calls to appropriate subroutines to produce the 8 ms segment in question. Labels on each of the subdivisions correspond to the field labels in figure 1 describing the complete message. The 40K hertz tone on the transducer is

produced by alternating the logic value 0 or 1 of pin C PA0 of the user port at a rate of 40,000 cycles per second. The period of time that a given 40K hertz tone is produced is determined by the number of times the subroutine continues to loop. The calling program sets register X accordingly. Again, the period of time is determined by the number of loops. The instruction timings are given in the comments field of the assembled instructions in each subdivision.

doesnt show the time well; but the timing functions are working fine.The MT14A looks cheaper made but functions in a similar way to the older model. The display is a backlit LCD instead of the LED display of the older model.

The time is not quite as readable, but perfectly usable, as the old red LED display, but instead you get info on which units are on or off. The MT14A has an external power supply and uses two AA batteries for backup during power failures. The older model had an internal power supply and a 9V battery. With the MT14A you can set up to 64 on or off times which is a big improvement over the older unit. The setup was easy and everything worked as expected.I have to say that this new one does work as specified, but it definitely is a long way from the quality I had in several X10 units from the past. The buttons on it are very small, overly sensitive, and all bunched together. You practically need reading glasses to operate this one. And then there is the hideous bright green backlite that cannot be adjusted or turned off. Overall the unit seems to be very shabby quality. Unfortunately, this seems to be the only X10 timer on the market now, and since X10 technology is surely being replaced by smart phones and new systems, it is unlikely new X10 equipment will ever be offered.

Too bad as it was a great, simple technology that I have used more than 35 years.The corresponding timers seem to last about 3 years or less. This new one has a weird lime green backlit display that is just hideous. My other one is LCD with no such light. I found that using the new Power Adapter with my old Mini Timer fixed the issue. So the bright green timer went back in the box for now. Hope it stays there.It works for the one thing I need t to do, but I have two installed in my house because if the timer isnt on the same circuit as the module youre trying to control is will not work. Ill stick with this as long as I can because the new WiFi and cellar devices are priced way to high and have their

own set of connectivity issues.Ive used controllers, timers, outlets purchased from Radio Shack for many years mostly without trouble.

More recently I purchased a small MC10A manual controller from X10 and that works fine. But this MT14A timer is hopeless. It wont control anything even when it and an appliance module are

plugged into the same outlet. That failure to work was observed using different outlets and different, tested, appliance modules. I conducted a dialogue of sorts with the manufacturer but that went nowhere just suggestions to try the obvious. So, given this failure to work was observed with two different timers i returned the first useless unit to Amazon for replacement and returned the second for a refund I can only conclude that the timer is defective in design or the manufacturer has quality control issues they are unwilling to address. Whatever the reason I strongly suggest you avoid this timer.The screen is very easy to see and shows the current status of each module. Some will find the green colour unappealing, but unless you keep it in a high visibility area this doesnt matter. The controls are easy to use once you get the general idea of how they work. The thin manual that comes with the device is larger than the previous one and doesnt require a magnifying glass to read. Well, yes, allowing for the quirky and unreliable nature of the old X10 protocol. This one works as well as the previous three Ive owned two were the old BSR devices. That is to say, most of the time the lights act as programmed. Sometimes they dont. The wiring in my house is old and complex. There are two separate meters. Its not an ideal environment for X10. If you have a more straightforward wiring situation youll probably get better results.I found the old versions easier to schedule. It has done the job since I put in operation but I have found no way to turn off the bright green display light.
