Bug Jam celebrates 30th year in Dade City Two-day event is extra special since it coincides with Veterans Day BY STEVE LEE News Reporter. who was among four of five boys in his family to serve in the armed forces. “May we never forget what our country has asked them and what they have given in return.” Mayor Gene Whitfield, another local resident who proudly labels himself a patriot, walked down Main Street passing out little American flags to the crowd that waved and cheered during the parade. The outpouring of gratitude filtered down to a younger generation with Cub Scout Pack 77 youngsters passing out thankful sayings with small toy soldiers. A part of that message read: Home of the free, because of the brave … say a prayer for a soldier today. Few in the crowd that gathered along 5th Avenue were aware that this year’s parade was nearly cancelled. In early October there were only seven entries and the event was in serious jeopardy. But Anna. Not since taking over the Bug Jam five years ago has organizer Randy Yoho been this content with the annual show at the Pasco County Fairgrounds. That’s because this year’s two-day event coincided with Veterans Day. “It was nice,” said Yoho, organizer of the event who also owns the adjacent Dade City Motocross. Opening ceremonies at the Pasco County Fairgrounds paid tribute to veterans of the U.S. armed forces with those who served receiving a discount on admission. Local JROTC units also were included with children under-10 admitted free with a can of food donated to the Thomas Promise Foundation. “We came to this two years ago, but the recognition for our veterans made this one really special. I didn’t even know they were going to do that,” said Nicholas Cheevers, who served in the U.S. Army and along with his wife Mariam came from Indiana. Jarrett Happ, a retiree from Oklahoma who brought his son William, travels to various Volkswagon shows and wanted to come back to this one in Dade City for a second straight year. They bought some parts to work on four Volkswagons they own. “It’s crazy when you see people who come from that far,” said Yoho, who also gets plenty of out-of-town visitors for his motocross races and the mud endeavors hosted at his track. Another visitor a bit closer to home was Victor Melendez, who is originally from Puerto Rico but now resides across the state in Port St. Lucie. Melendez arrived in his 1971 Volkswagon bus with a diesel engine. Last year, he won first place in the. ➤VETERANS DAY: See Page 10A. ➤BUG JAM: See Page 4A. Weather. Veterans Day Parade continued thanks to some late entries BY STEVE LEE News Reporter. A local tradition of honoring Americans who served in various military branches continued with last Saturday morning’s Veterans Day Parade in downtown Zephyrhills. A day later, a ceremony took place in Zephyr Park to recognize U.S. veterans. Before last weekend’s parade, Betmar Acres’ Johnny Ellis delivered a stirring rendition of the national anthem. That was followed by a touching tribute from Manny Funes, a former city councilman and longtime Rotarian. “We honor them for their faithful service in defending and preserving our freedom,” said Funes,. STEVE LEE. City Council taps William C. Poe Jr. for assistant city manager Weighing two highly qualified candidates, the Zephyrhills City Council went with a familiar face and more direct experience in city management in Poe BY ANDY WARRENER News Reporter. The Steve Spina era is coming to an end. The city manager that is closing in on his 20th year of service to the City of Zephyrhills, is retiring. Spina served as city manager from 1996 to 2011 and has been back at the post since 2014. It’s time for Spina and the city to move on. Spina has graciously agreed to stay on while the new city manager finds his feet. It should not take long as both applicants that made presentations last Wednesday, Nov. 7, at a special session of the city council, were highly-qualified. Council president Lance Smith commented on the two great choices the council had during deliberations. The two candidates were William Poe Jr. and Melanie Kendrick Romagnoli. The fairgrounds association had been organizing the event, but five years ago Yoho took over. Although it is a lot of work he is content to have made that decision. “It actually got too big for the fair association,” he reasoned. “We took a look at it and made a whole lot of changes. I’m happy with the way things are going. It’s a big project. It takes lots of volunteers.” While there were plenty of out-of-state visitors, a few locals and others not far away ventured to the Bug Jam last weekend. Count Zephyrhills’ Zach Sheffield and his wife Devyn among that group. “It’s just to get out,” said Zach, who used to own a Jetta. “My father and grandfather build Volkswagons. They have seven of them. I like it, looking at all the different varieties.”. While several Volkswagons were on the market and plenty sold during the event, some owners were not selling. Like Dr. Robert Sheridan, an orthodondist from Suncoast Braces in Spring Hill, who brought some of his staff to show off his restored 1966 T2. “It’s our company vehicle,” he said. Brooksville’s Missy Green, who came with her brother Mike Pursifull intending to sell a 1974 Thing she purchased in 2012 if the price was right, changed her mind. “That was the intention, to sell it, but after I washed it I decided I can’t let it go,” said Green, who used to drive The Thing along Gulf Boulevard when she previously lived in Indian Rocks Beach in Pinellas County. Aside from a poker run, Bugs on the Track in which the vehicles were driven on the offroad motocross track, a parade and cruise-in, and a concert, a highlight was the car show. The number of entries this year, 732, exceeded last year’s 700 VWs. “It’s been going up slowly every year, so I think we’re moving in the right direction,” Yoho said.. Ruth was also the grandmother of 10 children as well as 11 great-grandchildren who were the apple of her eye. A visit with Ruth seldom did not include a mention of the pride she had for her family. Having grown up in Groton, N.Y.; Ruth met Chuck while she was in the sixth grade. After marriage, they resided in the Genoa/King Ferry area of Cayuga County in upstate New York until becoming snowbirds spending winters in Dade City/Zephyrhills since 1985. While Ruth best identified as a wife and mother, she also found great gratification. by her years of volunteer service, which included the Genoa Fire Auxiliary, the Ladies Club and the Home Bureau. In accordance with Ruth’s wishes, a memorial service to celebrate her life will be held next summer in New York where she will be buried with her daughter, Diana. (7) Zephyrhills News | Thursday, November 15, 2018 7 A. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver. •It was 20th-century American singer and songwriter Bobbie Gentry who made the following sage observation: “Euphemism is a euphemism for lying.” •In a match between a 200-pound mountain lion and a 20-pound porcupine, the lion is likely to be the loser -- and probably will die if it tried to take a bite of the desired prey. •The next time you’re annoyed by a bad case of the hiccups, consider poor Charles Osborne. In 1922, when he was 28 years old, Mr. Osborne got the hiccups. For the next 68 years, he continued to hiccup, finally stopping in 1990, one year before his death at the age of 97. •Marilyn Monroe’s iconic film “Some Like It Hot” (which in 2000 was named the greatest American comedy film of all time by the American Film Institute) originally was titled “Not Tonight, Josephine!” •At one time the Catholic Church considered it sinful to eat a hot dog. •For a nation based on a foundation of democracy, the U.S. certainly has a lot of states (that were originally colonies, of course) named for British royalty or nobility. The state of Virginia, for instance, was named for Queen Elizabeth I, known as the “Virgin Queen”; and Georgia was named in honor of King George II. King Charles II got both North and South Carolina, while the Duke of York and Albany -- later King James II -- was honored when the state of New York was named. Even France got in on the action: When explorer Robert de la Salle claimed a large chunk of territory for France in 1682, he named it Louisiana, after King Louis XIV. *** Thought for the Day: “It is frequently the tragedy of the great artist, as it is of the great scientist, that he frightens the ordinary man.” -- Loren Eiseley.

(8) 8 A Thursday, November 15, 2018 | Zephyrhills News time, listened to their presentations and then asked questions of the two applicants. While, Poe’s familiarity with Zephyrhills and the people that work for the city, is a plus, councilman Alan Knight brought up the notion of Poe being able to detach from his personal relationships while serving as city manager. “Dr. Spina doesn’t take sides,” Knight said. “He is able to distance himself from community ties to make decisions.” Poe admitted that this would be a challenge but that he would do his best to make decisions that are, “best for Zephyrhills” and that situations like that often come with the position. Romagnoli brought a wealth of experience working across multiple agencies and interfacing with different city and county departments, as well as a PR/marketing element. In the end, it came down to how quickly the new assistant city manager would adapt, how well they would interface with the city’s 12 departments and 180 employees, and how well they can prepare budgets. The decision was made to go with Poe. “I hope to live up to the expectations,” Poe said. “I think there’s even more pressure because it’s my home town but I think what I learned in 11 years in Dade City, I will be able to apply that here.” The next step is finding Poe’s replacement in Dade City. Poe had to give Dade City 90 days of advance notice before taking a new position but it was revealed by Poe that the advance notice could be negotiated down if an adequate replacement could be found sooner. From there, Spina will have a shadow for the next few months as he trains up his replacement.. ➤CITY MANAGER: From Page 1A to the table, having served as Dade City’s City Manager since 2008. Prior to that, he was the assistant planner for the City of Zephyrhills. Romagnoli had served as program administrator for the Office of Economic Growth for Pasco County from 2010 to present and was the community and economic development director for the City of Urbana in Ohio, from 2005 to 2010. Both had worked with Zephyrhills City Council members and municipal departments in the past. What set Poe apart, according to the council, was his familiarity with the job and with the people of Zephyrhills. “He (Poe) will be doing the exact job, just on a smaller scale,” councilwoman Jodi Wilkeson said during deliberations. “We want someone local, who will feel like part of the family,” Smith said. Additionally, there was concern over how quickly the new assistant city manager would pick up the job. Spina plans to stay on as city manager through 2018 and into 2019. “We wanted to do a secession plan like what we did with the city clerk position,” Spina said. “We’re planning for the end of May or June to be handing over the reins. If we’re in the middle of something, I might stay longer, if everything goes well, it’ll be shorter.” Spina turns 66 in July. The plan is for the newlyhired assistant manager to take over the head position. The assistant city manager position was created for that purpose. The council brought in the candidates, one at a. Stutzriem, coordinator of Main Street Zephyrhills, said enough entries registered late to ensure the parade would take place. “I would’ve had to cancel it,” she said, noting that at least 25 entries were needed by Nov. 1 and ultimately there were 38 in all. “I love (the parade) and I think that’s the least we can do for our veterans.” As is the case with all of the parades that take place downtown — next up is the Christmas Parade and Festival of Lights on Dec. 8 — there were locals and visitors alike. Some were near while others came from far away. Sally and Kevin Franks, Dade City snowbirds from Windsor, Ontario, have been to the annual parade on several occasions. “In Canada we have Remembrance Day to remember our soldiers. It’s the same thing with a different name than your Veterans Day,” Sally said. Another couple from Dade City, Ron and Marsha Russo, brought their 4-year-old grandson Harrison Taddeo, of Wesley Chapel. They waited for the parade to start while the little boy played with a remote control toy car. “We’ve been to parades here before,” Ron said. “We like to come down to Zephyrhills occasionally.” For Zephyrhills residents Claude and Shirley Riegler, last Saturday marked their first downtown parade on Veterans Day. “You know the old song I love a parade? Well, here she is,” Claude said, pointing to his wife.. Added Shirley, “(Claude) does things with the veterans and I thought this was a good idea to come.” Someone else who got a chance to come to his first Veterans Day Parade in Zephyrhills was Erik Velasquez, a 2008 Wesley Chapel High graduate who served in the U.S. Navy. “It was a nice little parade,” he said. “It’s nice to see that more than just World War II and Vietnam veterans are coming out. The young people are coming out now.” The city was represented by numerous people and groups including the police, fire, sanitation and utilities departments, the aforementioned mayor and councilwoman Jodi Wilkeson. Another fixture in local parades featured the Pasco Sheriff’s Mounted Posse. A prominent figure, fresh of his election win for a third term as state representative in District 38, was Danny Burgess. The former city councilman and mayor is a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve. Also, the Marine Corps League Detachment’s past president, Rod Rehrig, rode in the parade.
