(4) Festival Director’s Welcome Who would have imagined that the little art & craft market that started in 2014 would become a two-week festival with over 100 events!. opportunity to share what we are most proud of – our beautiful heritage town, rich in history, rich in culture.. After our COVID-enforced suspension in 2020, we embarked on our festival planning with considerable trepidation, and although the uncertainty hasn’t entirely receded, we are confident that this year’s festival will be memorable for all the right reasons.. I am particularly thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Mace Francis, our Jazz Program Director, and William Yeoman, our Writers Program Director, as well as our team of professionals led by Festival Producer Elliot Chambers who have all set a new standard for this year’s Festival.. The York Festival celebrates its location in the West Australian Wheatbelt, and the local community relishes the. Sincere thanks to the Management Committee of Wheatbelt Arts & Events for your loyalty and incredible support, and to our sponsors: Shire of York, Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications, Department of Local Government, Sport & Cultural Industries, Regional Arts, Healthway, Lotterywest and Tourism WA. Welcome to The York Festival 2021!. Jenny Garroun Jenny Garroun Festival Director.

(5) Ministers’ Welcome The McGowan Government is a proud sponsor of The York Festival through its Regional Events Scheme. The scheme was established to support smaller and emerging events in regional Western Australia to boost tourism, increase community vibrancy and participation, and develop regional areas. It also plays an important role in positioning Western Australia as an exciting destination to visit and a great place to live by showcasing and promoting the host region’s unique and diverse attractions. Sixty-two regional events across WA have been funded through the 2021-22 Regional Events Scheme, which includes the Regional Aboriginal Events Scheme, with a funding pool of $150,000 exclusively allocated to events delivering Aboriginal activities and experiences. We are pleased to support these events, which will help to stimulate regional economies and communities that have been set back as a result of COVID-19. Tourism is a key part of the Government’s plan to energise the. economy, create jobs and develop business opportunities, especially in regional Western Australia. Events play an important role in this plan, with the Government sponsoring a range of sporting, cultural, arts and culinary events across the State, through Tourism Western Australia, to attract visitors, encourage them to stay longer, disperse further and do more while they are here. We hope everyone enjoys this event and takes the time to explore the Wheatbelt Region.. HON DAVID TEMPLEMAN MLA MINISTER FOR TOURISM. HON ALANNAH MACTIERNAN MLC MINISTER FOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

(6) About The Festival The York Festival, presented by LiveLighter, is a two-week, multiarts event based in the historic town of York, Western Australia held from Saturday 25th September to Sunday 10th October 2021. Since its establishment in 2014, the Festival has gained notoriety as the premier cultural event in the Avon Valley and is a significant contributor to the economic and cultural development of the region. The Festival attracts thousands of visitors each year by offering a diverse program of family-friendly entertainment featuring music and performing arts; art and craft exhibitions and workshops; walking tours; and much more in Western Australia’s oldest inland town held during Djilba and Kambarang, the first and second spring of the Noongar six seasons. In 2021, The York Festival welcomes the return of jazz to York in our Jazz and Stage Program, with performances from local renowned artists held throughout the historic town centre. Curated by Perth Jazz Festival’s Mace Francis, the program makes use of orthodox venues and unusual spaces during the Festival’s opening weekend from. Friday 24 September to Monday 27 September. 2021 also sees the Festival host its first Writers Program. Curated by The West Australian’s William Yeoman, the Writers Program is guaranteed to engage and delight readers of all ages as new and established WA authors serve up a feast of fiction, non-fiction, kids’ books, crime fiction and poetry on Saturday 2 October. The Art and Craft Program provides an opportunity for arts aficionados the opportunity to witness and learn a variety of rare and endangered crafts from local artisans in various exhibitions and workshops. The program showcases a range of diverse craft practices from blacksmithing and fibre weaving; to book binding and printmaking (in WA’s only print museum); embroidery to wood carving; and much more. Families will have the opportunity to revisit childhood memories or create new ones with our interactive, hands-on Family Program of events and workshops from Lego building to umbrella painting, circus tricks to cubby making, and a variety of fun, exciting demonstrations from sock making to sheep shearing that will entertain kids of all ages..

(7) Our History Program celebrates the rich, diverse heritage of the town through its fine collection of local museums and our series of popular walking tours. Presented by LiveLighter and hosted by The York Society, our walking tour program details the town’s history since its establishment in 1831, whilst acknowledging its original inhabitants, the Ballardong Noongar people, whose existence in the area dates back over 50,000 years. A special feature of The York Festival is its capacity to bring the community together and this year’s. Community Program is a fantastic exemplar of this with events held by local organisations including the York Medieval Fayre presented by Act Belong Commit, arts and crafts markets from Event Pop Artisan Markets, and stargazing atop Wongborel (Mount Brown) where guests will see Daniel Garlett’s Dadajaal Dance Company present the ‘Morning Star” dance and hear Northam-based Ballardong Noongar storytellers share stories from creation time before watching the Milky Way explode across the night sky..
