Sisterhood in Chapter DW, Missouri, and she gifted the college to P.E.O. from the platform of the 1927 convention of Supreme Chapter in Oklahoma City.

Cottey and the P.E.O. Sisterhood are partners in the important work of educating women!

Dr. Jann Weitzel –Dr. Jann Rudd Weitzel became the 12th president of Cottey College in 2015 and brought with her the skills developed as a college professor, a dean, and a provost. During her first three years at Cottey, Dr. Weitzel has, among other projects, overseen the creation of four new academic programs and a move to four-year athletic programs. She has spoken at two Conventions of International Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, many state conventions, and a variety of reciprocity and chapter

meetings. A native of Iowa, Dr. Weitzel earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master of Arts degree in gifted education from the University of Northern Iowa, and she earned her Ph.D. in curriculum and supervision from the University of Iowa. She is a 25-year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and a current member of P.E.O. Chapter ND, Missouri.

Four-years – Cottey offers four-year B.A. and B.S. programs. Students may complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in four years with any of the following majors – Business Administration-Management, Criminology, English, Environmental Studies, International Business, International Relations, Liberal Arts, Organizational Leadership, Psychology, Secondary Education, and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

Serenbetz Institute – In 2014, Cottey received a gift of $1 million from P.E.O. Thelma Serenbetz, which allowed for the creation of the Serenbetz Institute for Women’s Leadership, Social Responsibility, and Global Awareness.

Suite Life – Cottey’s campus houses 34 suites, which consist of small communities for about 10 to 14 women. Cottey purposefully creates suite diversity so that students have an opportunity to live with women from other states and countries. Suites typically have a mix of new and returning students who share a living area, a small kitchen area, common bathroom, individual double and single student bedrooms. Each hall has a live-in hall director and three resident assistants.

Traditions – Just like in P.E.O., Cottey women have traditions which help them form friendships that last a lifetime. Ask an alumna about the Duck Game, DJs, Step Sing, or Skinnamarink! Every year, alumnae come to celebrate Cottey and reconnect with each other at the annual Founder’s Day Weekend event at the end of March.

Clubs – Nationally recognized for student life activities that engage and retain students, all members of the community may find clubs and organizations that interest them whether their passions are academic or athletic in nature, lean toward cultural or recreational pursuits, involve social activism, or center on religion or service activities. Cottey students have an opportunity to be a part of over 40 clubs and

organizations on campus, all of which provide leadership opportunities and shared interest collaborations as they create, build, and support the Cottey community together.

Annual Fund – The Annual Fund consists of unrestricted gifts that support the daily operations of the College. Your contribution to The Annual Fund will go to work where it’s needed most and may include support for things such as salaries and professional development.

Cottey Cash – Cottey Cash may be spent at the Bookstore, Raney Dining Room, or at the Chellie Club.

Cottey’s Chellie Club is a snack bar named after Chellie Stevens Wright, President of Supreme Chapter from 1937-1939. You may purchase “Cottey Cash” for suites or individual students online or by sending a check to the Office of P.E.O. Relations.

Care Package – One of the best ways to support a Cottey student is by sending a care package. Favorite

gifts include snacks, school supplies, and quarters for laundry. More ideas may be found online at

The Wild Center for the Arts houses the theater department offices, the P.E.O. Foundation Gallery, and two auditorium spaces.

Scholarships – There are many types of scholarships available to applicants for admission to Cottey. In addition to federal and state aid, the College is proud to offer institutional aid on a limited basis as

funding allows. Cottey offers a variety of scholarships based on academic merit, extracurricular activities, leadership and athletic performance. Funds are made possible by the generosity of Cottey College

Alumnae, members of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and friends of the College.

Community – The Cottey community is diverse, inclusive, and vibrant. Both the Nevada and Cottey

communities provide a supportive environment for students who are far away from home. With a student to faculty ratio of 10 to 1, the professors have time to interact on a personal level with each student.

Students can always find support from staff, peer listeners, residence hall directors, campus counselors and suitemates.

International Diversity – Cottey’s large proportion of international students earned the College a number three ranking in the Midwest region from U.S. News & World Report as College for the Largest

Proportion of International Students. International students add diversity, enriching the experience of

other students on campus. Cottey College has a student population of 15% international students.

Social Responsibility –The Cottey community routinely amasses well over 10,000 hours per year in community service. These hours represent labors as far reaching as collecting donations for local food banks, participating in cross-generational sharing projects at a local skilled nursing facility in Nevada, Missouri, and recycling campus paper products. At Cottey, students learn what it means to be citizens of a local community and of the world.

Women’s Leadership – Cottey College offers the next generation of women leaders more educational tools and learning opportunities than ever before through a challenging curriculum and dynamic campus experience. At Cottey, we believe there is a leader in everyone.

You can typically find wish list items to accommodate a variety of giving levels.

International Travel – Every student deserves a global education. At Cottey College, all qualified students have the opportunity to spend the first week of one spring break visiting a European city with classmates and faculty, learning about art, history, science, and culture. There is no extra tuition fee for the trip and Cottey pays for airfare and hotel. In past years Cottey students have traveled to Florence, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, London, Madrid, New Zealand, Thailand, Tanzania, Japan, Guatemala, and beyond.

Virginia Alice Cottey Stockard (VACS) – Virginia Alice Cottey Stockard became a P.E.O. in 1926, joining Chapter DW, Missouri. As she learned the extent of the Sisterhood’s purpose, it occurred to her that Cottey College might become a real asset to P.E.O., and she believed that with P.E.O. members in every part of the country, the power of this relationship would be unlimited. On the convention platform of the 1927 convention of Supreme Chapter in Oklahoma City, Virginia Alice Cottey Stockard presented her life’s work to the Sisterhood. For over 90 years, the members of the P.E.O. Sisterhood have been generous and judicious stewards of Cottey College. Working alongside the faculty and staff, the P.E.O. Sisterhood has held steadfast to the vision of our founders while supporting the growth of a college that has achieved national recognition for providing an education that inspires young women to reach for the stars and sets them on a course to impact our world!

Women & Science – It’s an exciting time to be a woman in science at Cottey College. In 2016, Cottey received the largest scholarship donation in the history of the College – a $1,750,000 anonymous gift for scholarships to be awarded to Cottey science students. Cottey’s health science program graduated its first Bachelor of Science student in 2016 and it is now the largest baccalaureate program on campus. In January 2018, a new biology degree was added to the roster of baccalaureate programs that will prepare students for 100,000 jobs in fields related to biology.

Creators of Incredible Futures - this is the new brand tagline for Cottey College. The brand is built around

five brand attributes – a safe and aware community, an all-women’s education, a focus on the arts and

sciences, a campus with fewer than 400 students, and remarkable financial aid. These brand attributes

represent Cottey’s strongest characteristics.
