MUSINGS FROM THE DEACON CAVE

Harvest Time is Soon!

I am sure that I am not the only one who has said something to someone, and as soon as the words rolled off my lips, I regretted saying them. It is a terrible feeling to know that something I said may be hurtful to

another person. Words are powerful and can injure far more than a weapon because physical injuries can heal, but words that are spoken out of anger, jealousy, or spite can live inside a person for a lifetime. Yet even though words can bring pain, words can also bring healing, peace, and as James notes… salvation!

In the second reading today, James says to, “Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls.” Wow! What a powerful

statement to remind us how important it is that we pay attention to the word of God in our lives.

It is like a seed that is planted in the ground. Unless it is cared for, there is no guarantee that it will grow to its potential. A seed that is nurtured has a much better chance of flourishing than a seed that is ignored. The word of God is like that for us. If we nurture the word of God in our lives, there is a much better chance that it will flourish in us. So, pull up the weeds, cultivate the soil, water on a regular basis, and see what happens when we let the word of God grow in our hearts!

READINGS—AUGUST

There is a spot in FORMED that is such a wealth of knowledge, inspiration and learning called YDisciple. It’s typically focused on teenagers to young adults, but it’s truly something that provides insight to any age from teenagers to the elderly. There are so many to pick from, but to highlight one, go to FORMED and search “Keys to the Kingdom with Chris Padgett, season 8, episode 2.”

Here, Chris candidly explores why Jesus established a Church. He discusses the relevance today for all Christians and the way in which it’s essential to the life and spirit of every Christian.

Only 16 1/2 minutes long, you can listen in the car or while getting ready in the morning. You’ll be glad you did.

FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflection

In the reading from the letter of St. James we are urged to be “doers” of the Gospel, not just listeners.

Being a “steward” of God’s Word is a matter of listening to the Good News, embracing the Good News and putting the Good News into action in our day-to-day lives. And whenever we are uncertain as to what decisions to make or actions to take as good stewards of the Gospel, St. James reminds us: We can never go wrong if we resist popular values that are not compatible with the Gospel, and we come to the aid of those who are burdened, distressed and poor .

OVER 100 SCRIP CARDS AVAILABLE

So...is Liturgy of the Hours a new way to pray?

Actually, Liturgy of the Hours is a very ancient form of prayer. Since these prayers are heavily based on the psalms, its history can be traced back to Jewish tradition before Jesus was even born. According to Mark Bazzett in his article “To Pray Always: the Liturgy of the Hours,” the early Christians adapted the Jewish

“traditional prayer services at the third, sixth and ninth hours of the day, our 9 o'clock in the morning, noon and 3 o'clock in the afternoon.”

SEMINARIAN COLLECTION

Thank you to those who have participated in the 16

th

annual Seminarian Collection: Hope for the Future, Help them Today. There is still time to respond to the great need we have to support our local seminarians. Have you made your gift? So far this year our parish has raised $3,582.14. Last year, we raised a total of

$15,797.00. Let us see if we can increase our support of this important part of the mission of the Diocese of Green Bay. Disciples need to support one another.

Make your gift today by mailing in your pledge card or visit www.catholicfoundationgb.org/give.

Effective immediately, SCRIP will be sold after all Masses on the 2nd & 4th weekends of each month. Additionally you can purchase SCRIP at the Parish Office during normal business hours. The following cards are always available: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Festival Foods, Fleet Farm, Home Depot, Hometown Pharmacy, JoAnn Fabrics, Jacobs Market, Kohls, Kwik Trip, Menards, Meijer, Pick’n Save, Starbucks, Target, Walgreens, Walmart (Sam’s Club)

& Woodman’s. In addition, over 70 other companies are available for pre-order.

SCRIP is a very easy way to help your parish fundraise, so please consider using it.

Also, we are looking for more volunteers to help sell SCRIP, so we can offer it after ALL Sunday Masses. Please consider giving 1/2 hour of your time after one Mass per month. Please contact Tim Welch:
